Social Security Recipients Will Now Get Automatic Coronavirus Stimulus Checks

Stimulus checks for social security recipients

WASHINGTON Social Security beneficiaries will now automatically receive their coronavirus stimulus checks after a change made by the Trump administration late Wednesday night.

Lawmakers on Wednesday decried a policy enacted by the Internal Revenue Service earlier this week that would have required Social Security beneficiaries to file a simple tax return to receive the benefit although many of the beneficiaries mostly seniors and the disabled are not normally required to pay taxes.

Now, these Social Security recipients will receive their payments as a direct deposit or by paper check, just as they would normally receive their benefits.

“Social Security recipients who are not typically required to file a tax return do not need to take an action, and will receive their payment directly to their bank account,” Treasury Secretary Steven T. Mnuchin announced.

The $1,200 payments will be automatically sent to most taxpayers in the next few weeks. But about 15 million Americans do not file taxes each year, according to IRS estimates.

The change made Wednesday ensures that a portion of those 15 million Americans will now get an automatic stimulus check like taxpayers. But chairman of the House tax-writing committee, Rep. Richard Neal, D-Mass., said Wednesday night the administration still needs to do more.

What If I Dont Receive My Check On The Expected Date

The SSA notes that wait times to speak with a representative are shorter Wednesday through Friday and later in the day .

Minnesota: $750 Payments For Frontline Workers

Some frontline workers could receive a one-time payment of $750, thanks to a bill signed by Gov. Tim Walz in early May.

Eligible workers must have worked at least 120 hours in Minnesota between March 15, 2020 and June 30, 2021, and were not eligible for remote work. Workers with direct Covid-19 patient-care responsibilities must have had an annual income of less than $175,000 between Dec. 2019 and Jan. 2022 workers without direct patient-care responsibilities must have had an income of less than $85,000 annually for the same period. Applications for the payment are now closed.

Walz recently proposed using the states $7 billion budget surplus to fund a generous relief package, proposing that Minnesotans receive tax rebate checks of $1,000 per person. Doing so would require action from the state legislature.

There are certain protections for seniors even if it does not include a fourth stimulus check for them. Although the measure wasnt approved in 2021, theres still hope for it in 2022.

Stimulus Update: Millions Of Social Security Recipients Should Get Stimulus Checks Wednesday

Millions of Social Security recipients should get stimulus checks

Those who receive benefits from the Social Security Administration and retirement checks from the Railroad Retirement Board should see $1,400 stimulus payments arriving in their bank accounts on Wednesday, according to the Internal Revenue Service.

The latest round of COVID-19 relief payments will be seen mainly by those Social Security, Supplemental Security Income and Railroad Retirement Board beneficiaries who didnt file a 2019 or 2020 tax return or who did not use the IRS Non-Filers tool to access the first two coronavirus stimulus payments.

According to the IRS, direct payments will be sent to recipients in the same way they receive their Social Security or Railroad Retirement benefits.

The payments have been delayed because the IRS was not given the files by the Social Security Administration about two weeks ago.

After receiving data from the Social Security Administration on Thursday, March 25, the IRS began the multi-step process to review, validate, and test tens of millions of records to ensure eligibility and proper calculation of Economic Impact Payments, according to the IRS website.

For those who receive Department of Veterans Affairs benefits, the wait will be a bit longer. According to the IRS, the payments for veterans could be issued by mid-April.

The multiple stimulus checks were a huge relief for millions of citizens severely affected by the pandemic. Seniors were among the most affected groups as they have been further restrained by the high inflation that has followed.

Americans continue to hope for a 4th stimulus check as the effects of the pandemic refuse to die down. While successive variants have prevented a return to normalcy anytime soon, the nagging suspicion that the vaccine might not be a permanent solution to the pandemic has made it harder.

The unprecedented flare in the inflation rate has further complicated matters. It has been seen that inflation has increased the monthly expenses of an average American family by anywhere between $250 and $300.

New Guidance About Covid

The Treasury Department launched a new web tool allowing quick registration for Economic Impact Payments for eligible individuals who do not normally file a tax return, and also announced that it would begin making automatic payments. However, for some people receiving benefits from the Social Security Administration–specifically those who have dependent children under the age of 17–it is to their advantage to go to this portal to ensure they also get the $500 per dependent Economic Impact Payment. I encourage them to do this as soon as possible, and want to provide the following details:

People who receive Social Security retirement, survivors, or disability insurance benefits and who did not file a tax return for 2018 or 2019 and who have qualifying children under age 17 should now go to the IRSs webpage at www.irs.gov/coronavirus/economic-impact-payments to enter their information instead of waiting for their automatic $1,200 Economic Impact Payment. By taking proactive steps to enter information on the IRS website about them and their qualifying children, they will also receive the $500 per dependent child payment in addition to their $1,200 individual payment. If Social Security beneficiaries in this group do not provide their information to the IRS soon, they will have to wait to receive their $500 per qualifying child.

We will continue to update Social Securitys COVID-19 web page at as further details become available.

Social Security Combined Trust Funds Projection Remains The Same Says Board Of Trusteesprojections In 2020 Report Do Not Reflect The Potential Effects Of The Covid

The Social Security Board of Trustees today released its annual report on the long-term financial status of the Social Security Trust Funds. The combined asset reserves of the Old-Age and Survivors Insurance and Disability Insurance Trust Funds are projected to become depleted in 2035, the same as projected last year, with 79 percent of benefits payable at that time.

The OASI Trust Fund is projected to become depleted in 2034, the same as last years estimate, with 76 percent of benefits payable at that time. The DI Trust Fund is estimated to become depleted in 2065, extended 13 years from last years estimate of 2052, with 92 percent of benefits still payable.

In the 2020 Annual Report to Congress, the Trustees announced:

  • The asset reserves of the combined OASI and DI Trust Funds increased by $2.5 billion in 2019 to a total of $2.897 trillion.
  • The total annual cost of the program is projected to exceed total annual income, for the first time since 1982, in 2021 and remain higher throughout the 75-year projection period. As a result, asset reserves are expected to decline during 2021. Social Securitys cost has exceeded its non-interest income since 2010.
  • The year when the combined trust fund reserves are projected to become depleted, if Congress does not act before then, is 2035 the same as last years projection. At that time, there would be sufficient income coming in to pay 79 percent of scheduled benefits.

Indiana: $325 Rebate Payments

Like Georgia, Indiana found itself with a healthy budget surplus at the end of 2021, and it has authorized two rebates to its residents.

In Dec. 2021, Gov. Eric Holcomb announced that Indiana taxpayers would get a $125 one-time tax refund after they filed their 2021 taxes.

Theres no income requirement. Residents must have filed a state tax return for the year 2020 by Jan. 3, 2022, as well as a 2021 Indiana tax return by April 18, 2022, to be eligible. Payments started in May, according to a state information page.

Taxpayers who filed jointly will receive a single deposit of $250.

A second rebate was approved in August 2022 to grant another $200 per taxpayer.

Most taxpayers will receive their refunds by direct deposit, and the second payments started rolling out in late August. If you changed banks or dont have direct deposit information on file, youll receive a paper check. A printing delay put mailing the first round on hold for several months, but mailing resumed in mid-August. Checks mailed after that point contain payments for both rebates, for a total of $325 per taxpayer.

Distribution of printed checks is expected to take place through early October. If you did not file your 2021 tax return by the April deadline, you can claim your $125 rebate on your 2022 taxes.
