Third stimulus check update: Latest timeline for $1,400 payments in bank accounts

The IRS will issue a check by mail or direct deposit based on the data the agency already has in its systems. Taxpayers will receive their check through their bank account if their direct deposit information is already on file. Otherwise, the payment will be sent by mail.

If that bank account on file is closed or no longer active, the bank will return the deposit and the individual may be issued a check instead.

Incarcerated Individuals And Mixed Status Families Eligibility For Third Stimulus Checks

For the third stimulus check, anyone with a Social Security number can receive the stimulus check for themselves and their family members. This is different from the last bill and ensures that mixed families will receive the third stimulus checks too.

Its important to note that if you are incarcerated, you can still receive your check. And if you lost work or wages in 2020, you could get a higher amount than you did with the first or second stimulus checks.

And if you normally arent required to file taxes, either because of your income level or for other reasons, you are probably eligible for a stimulus payment.

Reminder: File your taxes by April 15!

Tip: If you havent yet filed your taxes, read about how to file your taxes for free and whether you should take a Refund Anticipation Loan.

The intention behind this stimulus check, as with the last two, is to support Americans during this difficult time. This may also be a good time to consider establishing savings habits to create a financial buffer for you and your family.

Will You Get A Stimulus Check ‘plus

As the IRS explained in a news release on Thursday, these plus-up payments provide “supplemental” support for Americans whose third stimulus check had been based on information from their 2019 income tax returns, but who are now in line for a new or larger amount based on their 2020 returns.

When it started processing the latest relief payments, the IRS had to rely on the most recent data in its system. If you hadnt filed your 2020 taxes before the third round of stimulus checks was set in motion, the IRS would have used your 2019 return to determine how much money you were eligible for.

But maybe you earned less last year than you did in 2019, because of the COVID crisis. If you’ve recently filed your 2020 taxes, you may be eligible for a bigger stimulus check now so you’ll receive a plus-up to make up the difference.

Individual taxpayers whose returns show adjusted gross income up to $75,000 qualify for the full $1,400 stimulus check. The same goes for couples who file jointly and have AGI of as much as $150,000.

Are Adult Dependents Getting Third Stimulus Checks

The new stimulus plan expands eligibility to adult dependents, including college students, elderly relatives and disabled adults.

The text of the plan redefines the term dependent according to section 152 of the tax code, which includes both qualifying children and adults: Section 152 provides that the term dependent means a qualifying child ) or a qualifying relative ).

While the plan pays out $1,400 for each qualifying dependent, families should keep in mind that the targeted lower income ranges exclude them if they earn over $160,000.

For reference, the second stimulus checks provided additional $600 payments for qualifying dependents under the age of 17. So a couple filing jointly with three eligible children could get a maximum second payment of $3,000 .

Under the first and second rounds of stimulus checks, children and adult dependents over the age limit could not get an additional payment, and they did not qualify for a stimulus check of their own either.

With the new stimulus plan, however, both joint filers and heads of household get an additional $1,400 payment for each dependent, regardless of age. The table below breaks down the third stimulus checks for heads of household with one dependent:

The Third Stimulus Check: Update On The Amount In The Bank

None of the three stimulus checks can be reduced to pay any federal or state debts and back taxes. Unlike the first stimulus check, your second and third stimulus check cannot be reduced if you owe past-due child support payments.

Federal or State Debt

If you are claiming the payments as part of your 2020 tax refund , the payments are no longer protected from past-due child support payments, creditor and debt collectors, and other federal or state debt that you owe . In other words, if you receive your first or second stimulus checks as part of your tax refund instead of direct checks, it may be reduced.

Third Stimulus Checks: When and How Will You Get $1,400?

If your IRS online account shows that you should have received a stimulus payment, but you didnât get it, thereâs a chance it could have been lost in the mail. Or you might have thrown away the prepaid debit card you received.

If you lost your stimulus check or suspect it was stolen, you can request the IRS trace your payment. If the IRS determines your check hasnât been cashed, it will issue a credit to your account. It canât reissue your payment, but you can claim the payment on your 2021 tax return using the Recovery Rebate Tax Credit worksheet.

If a trace is initiated and the IRS determines that the check wasnât cashed, the IRS will credit your account for that payment. However, the IRS canât reissue your payment. Instead, you will need to claim the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit on your 2021 tax return if eligible.

If you lost your EIP card, a prepaid debit card on which some individuals received their stimulus payment, contact card issuer MetaBank to request a replacement.

What Are The Eligibility Requirements For A Third Stimulus Check

The details are still being discussed in House committees this week while the Senate is in recess. However, these are the likely basic eligibility requirements based on Biden’s American Rescue Plan, which is serving as the template, and the House Ways and Means Committee Recovery Rebates proposal.

All estimates are based on the most recent AGI on file with the IRS and, like the last two checks, up to a maximum ceiling will gradually phase out.

Maximum available amounts for lowest earners

  • $2,800 for qualifying couples who file a joint tax return
  • $1,400 for each dependent child under the age of 17
  • $1,400 for each qualifying adult dependent

Qualifying income thresholds and phase out limits

  • Single filers: under $75,000 gets full amount, phase-out begins thereafter. AGI of $100,000 and over gets no check.
  • Joint filers: under $150,000 gets full amount, phase-out begins thereafter. AGI of $200,000 and over gets no check.
  • Head of household: under $112,000 gets full amount, phase-out begins thereafter. AGI of $150,000 and over gets no check.

Can I Use The Calculator If I Havent Filed A Tax Return For 2020

Yes, you can use your 2019 tax return. The IRS emphasizes that if you use your 2020 return to estimate your payment, dont guess your AGI: File an accurate return first. Adjusted gross income, as the name implies, is your gross income minus certain adjustments such as educator expenses, student loan interest, alimony payments and qualifying contributions to retirement accounts. You can find AGI on line 11 of your 2020 federal 1040 income tax return or line 8b of your 2019 return.

If you werent able to claim your earlier $1,200 or $600 stimulus checks, you can do so on your 2020 tax returns. Use the Recovery Rebate Credit Worksheet and enter the amount from the worksheet onto Line 30 of your 1040.

Third Stimulus Check: Your Next Relief Payment May Not Be $1400

Qualifying For The Third Stimulus Check: Here

A third stimulus check is part of the $1.9 trillion economic relief package signed into law by President Biden. Aside from the $1,400 payment, the American Rescue Plan also includes extended unemployment benefits, a bigger child tax credit and billions more dollars to stop the spread of COVID-19. These and other programs aim to support millions of Americans dealing with financial troubles brought on by the pandemic. They’re also designed to support the economy as vaccinations continue.

The third stimulus check polls very well among the public, as does the third stimulus package in general. However, Republicans and some centrist Democrats pushed back against the overall price tag and other specific aspects of the plan. Democrats, who control both houses of Congress, passed the stimulus legislation with narrow majorities. Budget reconciliation let them sidestep the filibuster in the Senate. But the slim majority gave moderate Democrats like Joe Manchin of West Virginia more power to make changes. That led to the elimination of the minimum wage hike and the unemployment benefit increase.

Why Stimulus Checks Are Still Needed

The economy shrank by 3.5 percent in 2020, the largest single-year decline since the end of World War II. Weekly unemployment figures remain historically high, with approximately 730,000 people initially applying for unemployment insurance in the third week of February. An additional 451,000 sought Pandemic Unemployment Assistance. Another 1 million people received Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation, benefits for those whose unemployment aid has otherwise run out. That group now totals 5 million people.

At the start of February, approximately 19 million people were receiving unemployment benefits of one kind or another. That’s one out of every nine workers. While the official unemployment rate is 6.3 percent, the actual rate is probably closer to 10 percent, given all the people who have dropped out of the labor force.

An economic bounceback depends on the widespread distribution of a COVID vaccine. But efforts to inoculate the public have proceeded sluggishly at times. Shortages and winter weather have forced some areas to temporarily close vaccination centers and scale back administering the vaccine in recent weeks. Many who qualify have faced problems in scheduling appointments. Nevertheless, over 50 million people have received at least one dose of a vaccine.

‘a Blessing To’ Category

With the past year being a financially tumultuous one for many, families may want to think about designating a portion of their $5,600 stimulus cash to give back.

Consider looking up a local food pantry or community organization near you that you can use your funds to help out. You can also make a charitable gift to a non-profit or private foundation of your family’s choice.

“This will help the family focus on their own blessings, as well as receive the joy that comes from being able to help someone else out,” Wells says.

If you qualify for the tax-free benefit and you already filed taxes for 2020, you will likely need to file an amended return.

The amount and length of additional unemployment support has been a key point of debate for this round of stimulus legislation. The extension of benefits signed by former President Donald Trump in late December were set to expire in March. Legislators strategized that another stimulus in March would be essential to minimize a looming gap in benefits for people who are out of work due to the pandemics effect on the economy.
