The IRS is in the middle of sending the next wave of third stimulus payments to those who are eligible for the payment. And if you’re age 65 or older, you receive Social Security benefits or you’re a veteran, you will likely receive a $1,400 check . It may be different, however, for individuals with “high” income levels from investments or other sources.

The total amount of this third check also depends on how many dependents you’re claiming this year , or if you’re claimed as a dependent on someone else’s taxes. Tax season may also be a deciding factor this time if you filed a tax return in early 2021 and it’s already been processed by the IRS.

Does The American Rescue Plan Provide Additional Unemployment Benefits

Continuing the expanded unemployment aid established by the CARES Act and the Covid-19 Economic Relief Bill, this new pandemic relief legislation extends unemployment benefits through early September 2021. Those filing for unemployment benefits will remain eligible for $300 in aid per week on top of normal payments. The additional benefits are automatic, and recipients need only to continue filing biweekly claims with their state unemployment insurance agency.

The act also includes a new benefit for unemployed Americans in the form of a significant tax break. Individuals who collected unemployment during the 2020 tax year may waive federal income taxes on up to $10,200 of that money , provided they earned less than $150,000 in 2020.

The Irs Is Sending Out Another Round Of Stimulus Payments Here’s What You Need To Know About The Third Stimulus Check With Your Name On It

The IRS started sending third stimulus check payments in batches shortly after President Biden signed the American Rescue Plan Act on March 11. And, so far, the tax agency has sent over 150 million payments. But many Americans especially those who haven’t received a check yet still have a lot of questions about the third-round stimulus checks. At the top of the list: How much will I get? And when will I get it?

Fortunately, we have answers to these and other frequently asked questions about your third stimulus check. We also have a nifty Third Stimulus Check Calculator that tells you how much money you should get . Read on to get the answers you need to the questions you have. Once you know more about your third stimulus check, you can start figuring out how you can use the money to your advantage.

Question: How many third-round stimulus checks will I get?

Answer: As with the first two round of checks, the legislation authorizing the third round of payments only calls for one payment. This is not a “recurring” payment situation.

Some married couples could also get two payments. If a joint tax return is filed, a married couple could get two separate third stimulus payments. Half may come as a direct deposit and the other half will be mailed to the address the IRS has on file. Each spouse should check the IRS’s “Get My Payment” tool separately using their own Social Security number to see the status of their payments.

What’s A Gross Income And Where Can I Find Mine

    • Half your Social Security benefits plus your other gross income and any tax-exempt interest is more than $25,000 filing single .

Incarcerated Individuals And Mixed Status Families Eligibility For Third Stimulus Checks

For the third stimulus check, anyone with a Social Security number can receive the stimulus check for themselves and their family members. This is different from the last bill and ensures that mixed families will receive the third stimulus checks too.

Its important to note that if you are incarcerated, you can still receive your check. And if you lost work or wages in 2020, you could get a higher amount than you did with the first or second stimulus checks.

And if you normally arent required to file taxes, either because of your income level or for other reasons, you are probably eligible for a stimulus payment.

Reminder: File your taxes by April 15!

Tip: If you havent yet filed your taxes, read about how to file your taxes for free and whether you should take a Refund Anticipation Loan.

Who Else Is Eligible To Receive A Stimulus Payment

Your Money: Where’s my third stimulus check?

As with the previous pandemic-related stimulus payments, gig economy workers, self-employed individuals and Americans on unemployment, disability, Social Security or other federal aid are also generally eligible for stimulus checks, provided they filed federal income taxes in 2020 or 2019 and meet the income thresholds.

There’s Likely A Hard Deadline For Another Stimulus Check

This change will effectively put an end to the possibility of any more direct financial help coming from the federal government. Republicans were unanimously opposed to the American Rescue Plan Act, which was the most recent of the stimulus bills, and lawmakers on the right have made clear they are not interested in handing out another stimulus check.

Although some key Republicans have voiced their support for an expanded Child Tax Credit, which is another type of financial relief included in the most recent stimulus package, it is also unlikely that this proposal would get the necessary support in the next Congress.

Can I Claim A Stimulus Check For Someone Who Is Deceased

Yes. For the third stimulus check, people who have died on or after January 1, 2021, are eligible to receive the third stimulus check. However, for married military couples, the date of eligibility is expanded. If the person who died was a member of the military and died before January 1, 2021, the surviving spouse can still receive the third stimulus check, even if they dont have an SSN.

For the first and second stimulus check, the IRS has stated that people who died on or after January 1, 2020, are eligible to receive both payments.

If they didnt receive the stimulus payments or didnt receive the full amounts that they are eligible for, spouses or other family members can file a 2020 federal tax return and claim it as part of their tax refund or use GetCTC.org if they dont have a filing requirement. The deadline to use GetCTC.org is November 15, 2021.

A third round of stimulus checks should be on their way to households across the US soon now that the House of Representatives has approved President Bidens $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief bill.

The IRS could start sending out the checks of up to $1,400 within days of Biden signing the American Rescue Plan Act, which hes expected to do on Friday.

This means the millions of Americans eligible for the one-time payments should have money in the bank by the end of the month.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer on Tuesday estimated that it could be just two weeks before families receive their checks.

Middle-class Western New York households will be getting a $1,400 check in the mail in about two weeks, Schumer said at a press conference.

They should get them by the end of March, so itll be a nice Easter present for everybody.

As with the previous two rounds of payments the $1,200 distributed last spring and $600 sent out in December those with direct deposit set up with the IRS will be the first to get paid, since the agency already has their account information on file.

Those without direct deposit will have to wait for their checks to be printed and mailed.

Not everyone will get a check.

To be eligible for the full $1,400 amount, individuals must have an adjusted gross income below $75,000. Smaller amounts will be available for earners between $75,000 and $80,000.

How Do I Qualify For The Third Stimulus Payment

How To Deposit The Stimulus Check

All U.S citizens who arent dependents will qualify for the stimulus payment if their AGI is below:

    • $150,000 If filing jointly
    • $112,000 If filing as the head of the household
    • $75,000 If filing as an individual

If your income exceeds these thresholds, you could still qualify for a partial payment if your income doesnt exceed:

    • $160,000 If filing jointly
    • $120,000 If filing as the head of the household
    • $80,000 If filing as an individual

If your income exceeds these amounts, regardless of your situation, you wont qualify for any stimulus payment.

If youre up to date with your tax returns and have filed in 2019 and 2020 showing an income lower than the above figures and have previously qualified for the stimulus payments, then the third payment should be applied automatically. This payment would be based on your previous years financial situation in the assumption that this hasnt changed.

If you previously only received half of the full stimulus payment , then the assumption would be that you would qualify for the same amount for the third payment. If your financial situation has changed since this time to lower your income further, then you may need to apply separately to receive the full amount or claim on a recovery rebate.

What If My Stimulus Check Is Too Small

Married people whose tax return includes an injured spouse claim may be getting their payment in two installments, the New York Times reported. An injured spouse claim protects one person’s portion of the tax refund from the other’s outstanding debts. Both payments should generally arrive in the same manner, whether by direct deposit or mail, but may not in some cases, the IRS told the Times.

If your stimulus check is too small for other reasons i.e. it doesn’t include all your current dependents or reflect your current income then you should file your 2020 tax return ASAP.

You can get up to $1,400 as an individual and $2,800 as a married couple if you file taxes jointly. Up to $1,400 will be added to your check for each dependent with a Social Security number.

The payments going out right now are largely based on 2019 income since we’re still in the middle of the 2020 filing season. If your 2020 income qualifies you for a bigger check, you’ll be able to get the rest of your money later this year after you file your 2020 return. According to the legislation, to be considered for additional payment you need to file within 90 days of the federal tax deadline, which is now May 17.

What If I Still Haven’t Gotten The First Or Second Stimulus Check

You’ll need to file your 2020 tax return to claim any stimulus money you’re owed from the first two rounds.

There will be a separate worksheet on your tax return with instructions for calculating any outstanding amount owed to you, called the Recovery Rebate Credit. If you file your taxes online, the provider will prompt you to enter the information and do the calculations for you.

If you do qualify for additional stimulus money, you won’t get it right away. It will first be applied to your outstanding tax bill. If your bill is reduced to $0, the rest of the money will be added to your refund. The IRS delivers most refunds within three weeks.

    What To Do Next

If you havent received a stimulus payment and you feel that you may have been eligible, you may now be entitled to a recovery rebate credit. To claim this, youll need to file a tax return to show your full household income for the previous year, filling in line 30 with your believed rebate amount. This will be processed within 3-5 weeks for a tax rebate.

What Is The 3rd Stimulus Check Amount

Most households that received an earlier stimulus check will get one again, but the amounts are different this time. The baseline:

    • $1,400 to each adult
    • $1,400 to each dependent meaning, anyone claimed on a tax return, including older adults, disabled adults, and child dependents of any age
    • For example, a family of four could potentially receive $5,600

So, do adult dependents get the third stimulus check? The minor and adult dependent eligibility is different from the second stimulus check, but there are a lot of caveats to be aware of. Its important to read through the information on the IRS website or this CNN article. A few important highlights:

    • Will dependents get the third stimulus check directly? No, dependents dont receive their own stimulus checks funds are sent to the household
    • You are still eligible to receive a stimulus check if you owe child support
    • If you have more or fewer dependents since the last time you filed taxes for instance, a new child was born into your family you should update your number of dependents by filing your 2020 tax return

Payments will be sent out in a few weeks via direct deposit, as physical checks, or via Economic Impact Payment debit cards.

Tip: Signing up for direct deposit with the IRS could help you get your refund even faster than waiting for a check or Economic Impact Payment debit card to arrive in the mail.
