When Should I Get My Payment
The IRS was given hard and fast deadlines to send the two rounds of Economic Impact Payments out to American families. The first round of payments had to be sent out by December 31, 2020. The second round had to be sent out by January 15, 2021.
What this means: If you have not received the first or second round of payments yet, then you will not be getting them in advance. The good news is that you can still do something to get these payments. Read below.
Second $600 Stimulus Check Details
While the CAA legislation, under which the stimulus payments were funded, required that the second round of payments be issued by Jan. 15, 2021, some second round Economic Impact Payments may still be in the mail and delivered by the end of February. The IRS however has confirmed has issued all first and second Economic Impact Payments it is legally permitted to issue, based on information on file for eligible people.
Get My Payment was last updated on Jan. 29, 2021, to reflect the final payments and will not update again for first or second Economic Impact Payments.
If you havent yet received your payment and GMP is not showing payment details then the IRS is recommending you claim this via a recovery rebate credit in your 2020 tax return that you will file this year. Major tax software providers like Turbo Tax and Tax Act have updated their software to allow tax payers to claim their missing first or second stimulus payment as a recovery rebate with their 2020 tax filing.
Under the COVID-related Tax Relief Act of 2020, the IRS has delivered more than 147 million EIPs totaling over $142 billion. Due to the lower income qualification thresholds and smaller payments this was lower than the 160 million payments made via the first stimulus check.
Stimulus Checks And Ctc Payments: Got A Letter From The Irs Don’t Ignore It
If you received a letter from the IRS, don’t ignore it you could be one of 9 million people who the tax agency says can still claim thousands in stimulus and Child Tax Credit payments, with only days remaining to get the money.
The IRS said it began mailing the letters in mid-October to reach millions of people who haven’t claimed benefits such as stimulus checks, the expanded Child Tax Credit and the Earned Income Tax Credit.
People who are eligible only have until November 17 to claim the money, the IRS said.
During the massive stimulus effort to help keep households afloat financially during the pandemic, the IRS relied on tax returns to determine eligibility as well as where to send the payments, as tax returns include bank account information or home addresses for mailing the checks. But about 9 million Americans have yet to claim the stimulus funds because they didn’t file a 2021 tax return, the IRS recently said.
The letters will let people know they may be eligible and how to claim the money, the agency said.

Change In Income Can Affect How Much Stimulus Money You Receive

Many Americans lost their jobs or had their hours reduced dramatically, which is likely going to impact their total income for tax year 2020. This is noteworthy because your 2019 tax return may not be reflective of your current income status. For example, someone may have made $125,000 during tax year 2019, but suddenly lost their job in early April 2020 causing their total income for 2020 to take a nosedive. Unfortunately, if the IRS uses the 2019 tax return, this individual might be disqualified from receiving a COVID-19 stimulus check or will receive a greatly reduced amount. If you find yourself in this situation, make sure to file your 2020 tax return and pursue a stimulus payment rebate in 2021.

Many Americans Have Unclaimed Stimulus Funds
According to the GAO, the IRS was unable to get stimulus payments to some people who were owed them in large part because there was no income requirement for the money and because the payments came in the form of refundable tax credits. This meant many low-income individuals and non-tax-filers were entitled to receive payments but the IRS had no way to contact these individuals.
Because of this, the GAO’s report indicated that the agency recommends “that Treasury and IRS use available data to develop an updated estimate of total eligible individuals which they could use to better tailor and redirect their ongoing outreach and communications efforts for similar tax credits.”
The GAO also went on to explain that people who were eligible for the third stimulus payment or for the expanded Child Tax Credit who did not receive either can submit a tax return by Oct. 17, 2022 to get their funds. They also have the option to request an extension and file a simplified return at the ChildTaxCredit.gov website.
Who May Still Be Eligible For More Money
There may be people who are eligible for the full $1,400 payments, or additional partial payments, particularly if their circumstances have changed.
Parents who added a child to their family in 2021 may be eligible for a $1,400 payment. Additionally, families who added a dependent to their family in 2021, such as a parent, niece or nephew or grandchild, may also be eligible for $1,400 on their behalf.
Additionally, people whose incomes have fallen may now be eligible for the money if their 2021 adjusted gross incomes are below the thresholds for full payments. If their incomes are in the phase-out thresholds, they could be eligible for partial payments.
People who do not typically file tax returns, and have not yet done so, need to file this year in order to receive the any potential payments.
The Recovery Rebate Credit money for which you are eligible will either reduce the amount of federal taxes you owe or be included in your refund.

As background, the federal government is still giving select workers stimulus payments, and states have used some of their federal relief to provide teachers bonuses, with some issuing stimulus checks to state residents who meet income requirements.
But another group eligible for stimulus payments might surprise you: babies born in 2021. The newest Americans qualify for payments up to $1,400 from the third round of federal stimulus checks that millions of people received in March. To qualify for the full amount, your household must meet income requirements: $150,000 for married people who file a joint return or $75,000 for individuals.
Eligible new parents who inform the IRS they had a baby or babies when they file their 2021 taxes next year will still receive a stimulus check for those children.
Plus, people with 2021 newborns might not realize that theyre eligible for the expanded child tax credit thats part of the governments COVID stimulus package.
You could have opted to inform the IRS this year about your new family member to get the early monthly tax credit installments that the agency paid in 2021. If you didnt, youll get the full $3,600 credit when you file your next tax return in 2022 and claim the baby as a dependent for the first time.

Are You Owed Money
You may be among the individuals the GAO is talking about in its report if you did not file a tax return for the 2020 or the 2021 tax year and you did not receive:
- A $1,400 check per eligible adult and eligible dependent that was authorized in March of 2021 by the American Rescue Plan Act
- An expanded Child Tax Credit worth up to $3,600 for children under age 6 and up to $3,000 for children ages 6 to 17, which was also authorized by the American Rescue Plan Act and which the IRS began distributing on a monthly basis from July to December. The monthly distributions accounted for half the credit with the remaining half claimed on 2021 tax returns.
If you are missing these funds, you should follow the GAO’s recommendation and submit a 2021 tax return by Oct. 17, 2022 so you can get the money you are owed by the federal government sent to you.
Th Stimulus Checks Given Out To Targeted Groups

Some states are digging into that wad of cash the government gave them and giving out the fourth stimulus checks to specific groups of people. The requirements look different for each state, but all seem to have a few things in commonlike falling into certain income levels or going through some kind of hardship.
The Grand Canyon State has a different take when it comes to stimulus checkstheyre giving them out to people who are going back to work. Arizonas Back to Work Program is offering $2,000 to those who got a job after being on unemployment.3 But you have to hold down your new job for at least eight weeks before getting the benefit.
The Golden State is the only one on the list to give out big ol broad-sweeping stimulus checks that look like the ones the federal government gave out. Heres how their numbers break down: Californians making $75,000 or less were sent a one-time check of $600 or $1,200 as part of the Golden State Stimulus I.4 And with the Golden State Stimulus II, they could be eligible for a second stimulus payment anywhere from $500 to $1,100.5 Thats on top of extra money the state paid out through the Young Child Tax Credit to those who have children age 6 or younger.6
These guys decided to shift their focus to giving their stimulus checks to the unemployed. They sent $375 to folks who had gotten at least one unemployment check payment between March 15, 2020, and October 24, 2020.7

- Check your bank statements. If you had your payments direct deposited, you can find the amount of your first, second, and third stimulus check using your bank statements. They should be labeled as IRS TREAS 310 and have a code of either TAXEIP1 , TAXEIP2 , or TAXEIP3 .
- Request an account transcript. You can request an account transcript sent electronically or by mail using Get Transcript. You can also call the IRS automated phone transcript service at 800-908-9946 or mail in Form 4506-T to have your transcript be sent by mail.

What If I Dont Have A Bank Account
If you dont have a bank account, a paper check will be sent to the address you listed on your tax return.
Direct deposit is the quickest and safest way to get payments. Alternatives to receiving a paper check are opening a bank account or using a prepaid debit card. Once you get a card, you may need to contact the company directly to find the account and routing numbers needed for direct deposit. To find a bank, you can view this list of accounts offered by financial institutions that meet national standards. You can also use payment apps like CashApp, Venmo, or PayPal.
Do not provide the bank account information for someone else. Different names on the tax return and bank account will trigger a reject of the deposit, causing the IRS to send you a paper check which will delay the delivery of your payment.
