More Stimulus Checks Are Likelyjust Not Until The Next Recession

$1,400 stimulus check update: When could you get your third payment? | FOX 5 DC

It took no time for Americans to get on board with stimulus checks. Back in March 2020, a Fortune-SurveyMonkey poll found that 89% of Democrats and 85% of Republicans supported a one-time direct payment. Its popularity didnt stop there: Democrats arguably used the promise of a $2,000 stimulus check to win the two Georgia Senate runoff races in January. Those victories, of course, gave Democrats control of the U.S. Senate and the power to pass the third check in March.

Those direct payments certainly had an impact on the broader economy. Look no further than a study by University of Michigan researchers that found the checks coincided with a drop in financial instability among recipients. However, the economic benefits arent why stimulus checks are poised to be a lasting policy creation of the COVID-19 recession. Instead, its the popularity and political power of the checks.

The politics of it suggest there will be future stimulus checks, Moodys Analytics chief economist Mark Zandi told Fortune this summer. Amid future recessions, Zandi says, lawmakers will surely face pressure from some voters to issue direct payments.

Child Tax Credit Stimulus Update

If youll recall from all our child tax credit coverage in 2021, Congress got a bit creative in how it structured the payout of that expanded benefit. Lawmakers essentially sliced it in half. Recipients got the first half up front, in 2021, spread out over six monthly checks.

The second half, however, is still coming later this year.

All of those recipients who got six child tax credit checks in 2021? Theyre also getting that same cumulative amount in the form of a tax credit. One that they can use when they file their federal taxes this year. For millions of Americans, theyll either be taking a $1,500 or $1,800 credit per child. Thats what those six checks added up to .

When Should I Get My Payment

The IRS was given hard and fast deadlines to send the two rounds of Economic Impact Payments out to American families. The first round of payments had to be sent out by December 31, 2020. The second round had to be sent out by January 15, 2021.

What this means: If you have not received the first or second round of payments yet, then you will not be getting them in advance. The good news is that you can still do something to get these payments. Read below.

How Effective Were Covid Stimulus Checks

Stimulus checks, which were designed as advance tax credits, were largely effective in helping consumers cover essential expenses during Covid shutdowns.

Those who received a payment told the Bureau of Labor Statistics their top uses for the money included food , rent and mortgage payments .

A few features helped make the relief effective, including the fact that earned income was not required in order to qualify and the tax credits were refundable, meaning they didnât just reduce your tax bill, but could also be refunded to you.

â Treasury and IRS got a lot of money out the door to eligible individuals very quickly,â says James R. McTigue, Jr., director of tax policy and administration at the U.S. Government Accountability Office . The GAO issues regular reports on the federal response to COVID-19.

But there were challenges distributing payments. Some of the most financially burdened people were least likely to receive a check, including 12 million people who werenât required to file their taxes and did not automatically receive the CARES Act stimulus payment.

âWe found that underserved communities such as nonfilers, first-time filers, unbanked/underbanked, mixed immigrant status families, those with limited internet access, and those experiencing homelessness were likely to experience difficulties with receiving timely payments,â McTeague says.

Federal Aid Still Available

Student loan relief: Those with federal student loans have not had to make any payments since March 2020. During this time, interest has stopped adding up and collections on defaulted debt have been on hold. Borrowers’ balances have effectively been frozen if they chose not to continue making payments.

The pause on payments has been extended several times. Payments are now set to resume on May 1.

Rental assistance: Congress authorized $47 billion for emergency rental assistance over the past year, and more than half of those funds remain available.

Households are eligible for the money if they experienced financial hardship due to the pandemic, have incomes at or below 80% of their area median income, can demonstrate risk of experiencing homelessness, or already qualify for unemployment benefits.

Hundreds of state-, county- and city-run programs were created to distribute the money. They have been successful in many communities, but some were extremely slow in getting money out the door. The Treasury Department is currently shifting unused funds to places that have run out money and still have people in need.

A federal moratorium on evictions expired in August after being in place for nearly a year. Evictions have ticked up since then but remain well below the historical pre-pandemic average, according to The Eviction Lab at Princeton University.

Health care subsidies: Americans can still access generous federal subsidies to buy Affordable Care Act policies for 2022.

When Will You Get Your Money

The exact date you’ll receive your money depends on your circumstances, but the IRS has already begun sending electronic payments to millions of Americans.

The speed with which you’ll receive your payment largely depends on how you filed your taxes. The IRS can distribute electronic payments quickly, but they must print and mail paper checks for some recipients, which takes additional time.

On April 15th, the IRS launched a portal to track the status of your stimulus payment. To track your payment, you’ll need your social security number, your birthday, your address and your zip code provided you filed your 2019 or 2018 tax return. If you are a qualified non-filer, there are additional links on the IRS’s website to input your information so you can still receive your check.

On April 2, Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin said that eligible Americans who have signed up for direct deposit payments should receive them within two weeks, a process which is already underway. A spokesperson for the Treasury Department expects 50 million to 70 million Americans to receive their checks via direct deposit by April 15, according to The Washington Post.

However, if you didn’t sign up for direct deposit when filing your tax return and require a paper check, you might experience some delays. In fact, because the government lacks banking information for millions of Americans, $30 million in paper checks won’t begin distribution until April 24, or longer.

Stimulus Checks For Hundreds Of Dollars

Farmworkers and meatpackers are entitled to up to $600 per person for pandemic health and safety-related costs, including personal protective equipment, child care and expenses related to testing or quarantining, the USDA says.

Approximately $20 million of the $700 million pool of money will be set aside for grocery store employees. However, the amount individuals in that industry will receive is not yet known.

Our farmworkers, meatpacking workers and grocery workers overcame unprecedented challenges and took on significant personal risk to ensure Americans could feed and sustain their families throughout the pandemic, says Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, in a news release.

They deserve recognition for their resilience and financial support for their efforts to meet personal and family needs while continuing to provide essential services, Vilsack says.

When it comes time to apply in 2022, workers must show proof of employment and provide self-certification of their pandemic-related expenses. Itemized receipts wont be necessary, according to Agriculture Department guidance.

The $2.2 trillion dollar stimulus bill has now been signed into law. Under this bill there is the widely reported economic stimulus payment checks of $1,200 per adult and $2400 for couples. For families they would provide $500 for every eligible child. The full stimulus check would be made to those earning less than $75,000 and would phase out to zero for those earning more than $99,000 . Head of household tax filers will get the full payment if they earned $112,500 or less.

In the phase out range for every $100 you earn above the lower limit payment drops by $5 until you reach the maximum limit .

Example If Brian made $67,000 last year based on his latest filed tax return, he would get the full $1200 payment. If he had made $90,000 he would only be eligible for $450 . If he had made $110,000 he wouldnt be eligible at all.
