Covid+credit: When Will I Get My $1200 Stimulus Check

Reading time: 4 minutes

Americans everywhere have been hit hard by the Coronavirus/Covid-19 pandemic, with much of the economy in a holding pattern amid nationwide efforts to curb the spread of the virus. Fortunately for those in need, some short-term economic relief is coming in the form of federal government stimulus checks.

As a part of the record-setting $2 trillion Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act approved in late March by Congress, most adults will receive a one-time payment of up to $1,200, though the exact amount depends on your income. Adults will receive an additional $500 for every qualifying child age 16 or under, and married couples without children earning below a certain threshold will receive a total of up to $2,400. You do not need to apply to receive a payment.

Now that U.S. government stimulus checks have turned from a dream into a reality, what’s the top question on everyone’s mind? When will I receive my money? The short answer? It’s complicated.

Stimulus Checks Were Calculated Based On Previous Tax Returns

The stimulus payments were based on your 2019 or 2020 tax returns, depending on how quickly you filed your 2020 tax return, said Nick Strain, senior wealth advisor at Halbert Hargrove. The 2020 tax return deadline was May 17, 2021, and the stimulus payments started to be sent to people in March of 2021 so, if you didnt file your tax return until May, then the IRS would have used your 2019 tax information.

In the situation where your 2019 was above the income thresholds but your income dropped below the $75,000 for single filers or $150,000 for married filers, you are eligible to receive the $1,400-per-person stimulus via tax credits on your tax return. It is important to review your 2019, 2020 and 2021 tax summary with your tax professional to determine if you are eligible to receive the 2021 tax payments.

While the deadlines for the first two Economic Impact Payments have passed, the third stimulus check, worth up to $1,400 per person, is still available if you haven’t already gotten it.

According to CNBC.com, the majority of qualified beneficiaries of the payments permitted by the American Rescue Plan in March 2021 had already received stimulus payments via direct deposit or mailed checks as of January 2022. If you haven’t gotten a payment, your only option is to file a 2021 tax return, which is due on April 18.

The 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit, the third stimulus check, was issued based on your income and the number of dependents stated on your 2020 or 2019 tax return. As a result, if you have qualified dependents in 2021, you may owe money. You may also be entitled for a stimulus credit if you did not file a return in 2019 or 2020.

You Can Still Get Your Payment

If your check got lost in the mail or pushed to the back of your drawer and expired, youre not out of luck yet, said Cliff Auerswald, president of All Reverse Mortgage, Inc., who has worked with clients receiving stimulus checks to help them continue to make their debt payments.

Every government-mailed U.S. treasury check comes with a one-year expiry date, as keeping valid checks floating around indefinitely is a big security concern, Auerswald said. But only the paper expires, not your right to the money. If youre sitting with an expired check, contact the IRS, get a new check reissued and get your money. You can also get a stimulus check replacement if yours was lost or stolen.

If you never got a check in the first place, its still not too late.

People who didnt get the third stimulus check or the full amount are still able to get their money, said John Robinson, a financial planning advisor with Credello. They will just need to fill out their 2021 taxes and, under the recovery rebate tax credit, stake their claim to get the money they are entitled to.

A letter was sent to Congress from the Senior Citizens League detailing why the need for a fourth stimulus check existed.

The group shared that theyve received hundreds of emails detailing the struggles seniors on Social Security face. Some are cutting their medication dosage in half while others are cutting back to only eating one meal per day.

To track your payment, you’ll need your social security number, your birthday, your address and your zip code provided you filed your 2019 or 2018 tax return. A spokesperson for the Treasury Department expects 50 million to 70 million Americans to receive their checks via direct deposit by April 15, according to The Washington Post.

However, if you didn’t sign up for direct deposit when filing your tax return and require a paper check, you might experience some delays. In fact, because the government lacks banking information for millions of Americans, $30 million in paper checks won’t begin distribution until April 24, or longer.

Americans Who Didnt Receive Any Stimulus Checks At All

Many Americans out there just havent received any of their promised stimulus checks. If thats you, you should jump at the opportunity to claim your credit.

A number of circumstances can cause these delays for you: Perhaps youve moved and the IRS doesnt have your new address on file. Maybe the IRS did have the correct address or bank account information, but it never hit your checking account or perhaps got lost in the mail. All of these would be instances when you should apply to reconcile your payment on your tax return.

As always, its good practice to go back through your records and find any documents from the IRS showing your designated stimulus amount, if you have them. Then, look back through your deposit statements around the time when both stimulus checks mightve been cashed or deposited .

The IRSGet My Payment tool will be helpful for tracking both of those checks statuses. That portal should also give you information showing the date of payment and the method , according to the IRS.

If all of your research validates these suspicions, its time to claim your Recovery Rebate Credit.
