$1,400 stimulus check update: When could you get your third payment? | FOX 5 DC

You can estimate how much money the IRS owes your household for the third stimulus check. Just make sure to triple-check that you meet the qualifications, including the income limits.

Because of the overlap with tax season 2020, many people may receive some, but not all, of their allotted amount. If your income changed in 2020, in some cases, the IRS may owe you more money than you received if the income figure used to calculate your payment from your tax returns in 2018 or 2019 is less in 2020. Likewise, if you now have a new dependent, such as a new baby, you may be owed more money.

The IRS is automatically sending “plus-up payments” to make up the difference. If you don’t get one, you may need to claim the missing money another way later in 2021 or even in 2022, since tax season is officially over now.

How To Claim Your Missing Third Stimulus Payment On Your 2021 Tax Return

Youâll need to request any missing third stimulus payments on your 2021 tax return by claiming the Recovery Rebate Tax Credit.

This is the case if you received a partial amount or didnât previously qualify for the third stimulus payment.

Letâs say youâre single and your income for the 2020 and 2019 tax years exceeds the threshold . However, you lost your job in 2021, so your income drastically decreased. You can now claim the Recovery Rebate Tax Credit since your earnings fell below the threshold.

Families that added dependents may also be able to claim the credit.

In addition, a few lingering taxpayers who file taxes using ITINs may not have received payments for their eligible dependents who have Social Security numbers.

You need to complete the Recovery Rebate Tax Credit worksheet and submit it along with your 2021 tax return. If you use a tax software program, it should guide you through the process. Keep in mind, the IRS predicted a frustrating and slow tax season this year, so file your return as soon as possible.

Before completing the worksheet, you must know the amount of any third stimulus payments received for you, your spouse, and any dependents. The worksheet will also request your adjusted gross income for the year to determine your eligibility.

The IRS started mailing Letter 6475 to taxpayers in Januaryâthe letter confirms the total amount of the third stimulus payments received for the 2021 tax year.

Some Stimulus Checks Remain Uncashed

More than a million Americans failed to cash the first round of stimulus checks provided by the March 2020 CARES Act, according to the Boston Herald . The IRS has said that the number includes funds paid back or left uncashed.

The Herald did not specify who received those payments, but it’s possible that some of those checks went to people who moved without leaving forwarding addresses or who had passed away since filing their 2018 tax returns.

The uncashed checks are less than 1% of the estimated 130 million stimulus payments provided by the CARES Act, but they may end up being a talking point for politicians and pundits opposed to a fourth round of stimulus checks.

Stimulus checks: Here’s what to do if you are still waiting for stimulus money

You’ll need to know the total amount of your third stimulus check payment and any “plus up” payments actually paid to claim the recovery rebate tax credit on your 2021 tax return. You can get this information from a few different sources. First, you should have received Notice 1444-C from the IRS shortly after receiving your third stimulus payment. If you received a joint payment with your spouse, the notice shows the total amount of the payment. If you’re married but file separate 2021 tax returns, each spouse must enter half of the payment amount shown on Notice 1444-C. People who received a plus-up payment should have received a separate Notice 1444-C after your payment was sent. Save Notice 1444-C with your other tax records.

The IRS is also mailed Letter 6475 in January. This letter confirms the total amount of the third stimulus check and any plus-up payments you received for the 2021 tax year. Again, if you received a joint payment with your spouse, the letter shows the total amount of payments. If you file separate 2021 tax returns, each spouse must enter half of the amount shown on Letter 6475. Save this letter, too.

Didn’t Get The Full Third Payment Claim The 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit

You may be eligible to claim a 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit on your 2021 federal tax return.

Individuals can view the total amount of their third Economic Impact Payments through their individual Online Account. Through March 2022, we’ll also send Letter 6475 to the address we have on file for you confirming the total amount of your third Economic Impact Payment and any plus-up payments you received for tax year 2021.

You will need this information from your online account or your letter to accurately calculate your 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit when you file your 2021 federal tax return in 2022. For married filing joint individuals, each spouse will need to log into their own online account or review their own letter for their half of the total payment. All amounts must be considered if filing jointly.

Using the total amount of the third payment from your online account or Letter 6475 when preparing a tax return can reduce errors and avoid delays in processing while the IRS corrects the tax return.

Can A Nursing Home Or Assisted Living Facility Take The Payment From Me

No. If you qualify for a payment, its yours to keep. If a loved one qualifies and lives in a nursing home, residential care home or assisted living facility, its theirs to keep. The facility may not put their hands on it or require somebody to sign it over to them. Even if that somebody is on Medicaid.

Don’t Miss: How To Check For Stimulus Checks

    What Is A Stimulus Check

A stimulus check is a check sent to a taxpayer by the U.S. government. Stimulus checks are intended to stimulate the economy by providing consumers with some spending money. When you spend this money, it boosts consumption and drives revenues at retailers and manufacturers and thus boosts the economy.

The stimulus payment is actually a refundable tax credit. This means the government gives you money, even if you didnt pay anything in taxes. Normally, you get money from tax credits when you file your tax return in April. Because of the COVID-19 emergency, the government wants you to be able to use the money now when you need it, instead of waiting until next April to receive it.

Traditional tax credits are a way of decreasing the amount of tax you pay the government. For most tax credits, you will not get a check. The IRS just makes a note that you have paid too much tax. This extra money can then be paid out to you in cash, or be used by the IRS to pay outstanding debts.

Research done by the National Bureau of Economic Research found that the means of delivery of fiscal stimulus makes a difference to the overall spending patterns of consumers. Receiving a stimulus check increased consumer spending. Not only did this give a lifeline to those in need, but it also boosted the economy.

The IRS is using your previous tax returns to see whether you qualify for a stimulus check. But dont worry, the IRS is not going to ask for the money back once you file your 2020 taxes.

To help get the word out about these tax benefits, the IRS announced on October 13, that it is sending letters to more than nine million individuals and families who appear to qualify for these stimulus benefits but did not claim them by filing a 2021 federal income tax return.

This includes people eligible not only for the 2021 recovery rebate credit and the child tax credit but also the earned income tax credit. The letters should arrive in the coming weeks.

When Will You Get Your Money

Still waiting on your stimulus check? How to get it in your tax refund

The exact date you’ll receive your money depends on your circumstances, but the IRS has already begun sending electronic payments to millions of Americans.

The speed with which you’ll receive your payment largely depends on how you filed your taxes. The IRS can distribute electronic payments quickly, but they must print and mail paper checks for some recipients, which takes additional time.

On April 15th, the IRS launched a portal to track the status of your stimulus payment. To track your payment, you’ll need your social security number, your birthday, your address and your zip code provided you filed your 2019 or 2018 tax return. If you are a qualified non-filer, there are additional links on the IRS’s website to input your information so you can still receive your check.

On April 2, Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin said that eligible Americans who have signed up for direct deposit payments should receive them within two weeks, a process which is already underway. A spokesperson for the Treasury Department expects 50 million to 70 million Americans to receive their checks via direct deposit by April 15, according to The Washington Post.

However, if you didn’t sign up for direct deposit when filing your tax return and require a paper check, you might experience some delays. In fact, because the government lacks banking information for millions of Americans, $30 million in paper checks won’t begin distribution until April 24, or longer.
