$1,400 stimulus check update: When could you get your third payment? | FOX 5 DC

The government has so far issued three rounds of stimulus checks.

The first “economic impact payment” was worth up to $1,200 and given to low-income households in 2020.

This was then followed by a second payment worth up to $600 at the beginning of 2021.

The Internal Revenue Service has sent a third round of cash support, which is worth up to $1,400, to hundreds of millions of Americans.

As of December 2021, the IRS had issued more than 175million stimulus checks worth $400billion under the third round of federal stimulus.

However, some Americans might still be owed $1,400 checks.

In fact, a report by the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration in March showed that hundreds of thousands of Americans were missing out on stimulus checks as of September.

This includes the following groups of Americans:

  • Those with an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number who have a qualifying dependent affecting 419,822 individuals
  • Unemployment benefit exclusion eligibles affecting 133,578 individuals
  • Those falsely marked as a resident of a US territory affecting 51,639 individuals
  • Those with filing changes or had an unresolved condition on their tax account affecting 39,666 individuals

In 2020, the IRS issued 162million stimulus checks.

More than 147million second-round stimulus checks have been issued, according to the IRS.

Nursing Homes And Assisted

Since the payment doesnt qualify as a resource for Medicaid purposes until 12 months after it was first received, nursing homes and assisted living facilities should not require residents to sign over their payment until this period has passed. If you believe a nursing home or assisted living facility has improperly taken the payment from you or a loved one, file a complaint with your states attorney general.

Expect Delays Especially If You Had Previous Payment Issues

Like the previous round of stimulus/economic impact payments, there will likely be payment issues given the expanded eligibility and dependent groups now able to get this payment . Also if you had issues in the past, and I know many are still waiting for the prior payments or had to claim them as a recovery rebate credit, expect some delays with the coming round of payments.

The good news is that the weekly batches will keep happening till the end of the year as the IRS aims to make payments to all eligible recipients . They are also actively sending payments to individuals for whom information was not earlier available but who recently e-filed a tax return.

Is There A Deadline To Get My Third Stimulus Check

Haven T Received Stimulus Check By Mail

If you will be filing a full tax return, you have until the IRS closes their tax filing software on November 20, 2021. After this date, you can still claim the third stimulus check in 2022 by filing your taxes for Tax Year 2021.

If youre not required to file taxes, the deadline to use GetCTC.org is November 15, 2022. You can get the Recovery Rebate Credit using GetCTC.org, a simplified tax filing portal for non-filers. GetCTC is an IRS-approved service created by Code for America in partnership with the White House and U.S. Department of Treasury. You can use the portal even if youre not signing up for the Child Tax Credit advance payments.

Taxation Of Third Stimulus Checks

Question: Will my third stimulus check be taxed later?

Answer: No. As with the first two rounds of payments, your third stimulus check is actually just an advanced payment of the Recovery Rebate tax credit for the 2021 tax year. As such, it won’t be included in your taxable income.

You also won’t be required to repay any stimulus check payment when filing your 2021 tax return even if your third stimulus check is greater than your 2021 credit. If your third stimulus check is less than your 2021 credit, you’ll get the difference when you file your 2021 return next year. So, it’s a win-win situation for you!

Don’t think that the child tax credit payments going out in just over two weeks are all the IRS is focused on. The tax agency continues to send weekly batches of the third stimulus checks, with more than $6 billion in stimulus payments going out just in June. Some of that money includes “plus-up” adjustments for people who received less money than they were supposed to get in earlier checks.

Even though many of us got our stimulus money in the earlier batches in spring, some have had to wait weeks or months for their checks. The IRS sent money first to people who’d already filed their 2019 or 2020 tax returns because those were the easiest to verify. So if you’re still waiting for your stimulus check up to $1,400 — or think you might be due a plus-up payment — we’ll tell you what to do next.

The Third Round Of Stimulus Checks

The most recent checks were included in the American Rescue Plan, which was enacted on March 11, 2021. Eligible individuals will receive a payment of $1,400 , plus an additional $1,400 per eligible child. However, those payments phase out quickly for incomes above $75,000 for single taxpayers, above $112,500 for taxpayers filing as head of household, and above $150,000 for married couples filing jointly. Taxpayers would be ineligible for any payment, unless they have a qualifying child, above the following income levels:

  • $80,000 for single taxpayers
  • $120,000 for taxpayers filing as head of household
  • $160,000 for married couples filing jointly

Similar to previous iterations of the payments, most taxpayers will receive the funds by direct deposit. For Social Security and other beneficiaries who received previous payments via debit card, they will receive this third payment the same way. Overall, such payments are expect to cost $411 billion through 2030 according to the Congressional Budget Office.

Third stimulus check questions: IRS still processing payments, more payments to hit accounts

The third stimulus check is worth $1,400 for Americans who make $75,000 or less per year. When President Joe Biden proposed the third round of payments, he said they’ll supplement the $600 payments that began going out late last year.

That means those eligible should receive up to $2,000 total from the government between December and April.

The Latest On $1400 Stimulus Checks

This tax season, the government is also issuing a third tranche of third stimulus checks for up to $1,400 per individual, plus $1,400 per eligible dependent.

Last week, the IRS and other agencies said about 127 million checks have been sent to date, for a total of approximately $325 billion.

Those $1,400 payments are generally based on 2019 or 2020 tax returns, whichever was most recently filed and processed by the IRS. Those who used the IRS non-filer tool last year should also automatically get their payments.

There are also advantages to filing a 2020 return in order to receive the $1,400 payment, according to the IRS.

If your income dropped from 2019 to 2020, you could be eligible for a larger payment. The IRS has said it may potentially send follow-on payments to those people after their 2020 tax returns are processed.

Filing a 2020 tax return also lets you update your direct deposit information.

This tax season, non-filers are also required to file a tax return in order to get their payment, provided they have not already submitted their information to the government.

Of note, people who receive federal benefits such as Social Security, Supplemental Security Income, Railroad Retirement Board and Veterans Affairs will generally receive their stimulus checks automatically, though there have been delays in processing some of those payments.

A third stimulus check is still available if you havent received it yet

While the deadlines for the first two Economic Impact Payments have passed, the third stimulus check, worth up to $1,400 per person, is still available if you havent already gotten it.

If you havent gotten a payment, your only option is to file a 2021 tax return, which is due on April 18.

Barely a week after the second round of stimulus payments were completed, new president Joe Biden entered office and immediately unveiled his American Rescue Plan, which proposed a third of round of payments to Americans, including some of those who might have missed out on the first two rounds.

On Thursday 11 March, Biden signed his $1.9tn American Rescue Plan into law. In addition, families with dependents were eligible for an extra payment of $1,400 per dependent, regardless of the dependent’s age this time, there was no limit to the number of dependents that could be claimed for.

The first stimulus payments were issued swiftly – just hours after Biden has signed the bill, the first batch of 164 million payments, with a total value of approximately $386 billion, arrived by direct deposit in individuals bank accounts. Some received their payments on the weekend of 13/14 March 2021. Since then, payments had been sent on a weekly basis including “plus-up” payments until the end of the year. If Your Third Stimulus Amount Is Less Than Expected

The IRS isn’t particularly big on communicating how much money it calculates for your stimulus check. You won’t find that figure in the agency’s online tracking tool, but you will see it in the confirmation letter you’ll receive in the mail.

So what happens if you use our stimulus check calculator and notice the numbers seem way off, or the IRS letter quotes an amount you didn’t receive? Start by triple-checking your qualifications to make sure you’re eligible for the total you expect. Remember the IRS is automatically sending plus-up payments after the agency receives your 2020 tax return. If you had a baby or otherwise added a dependent in 2020, you won’t need to file an amended tax form to claim the supplement.

The IRS could open up claims for missing stimulus money before its Dec. 31 deadline to stop sending checks. If not, you might have to wait until you file your 2021 taxes in 2022 to claim it — even if you’re a nonfiler who isn’t typically required to file taxes.
