How To Claim Your Missing Third Stimulus Payment On Your 2021 Tax Return

October / November / December Stimulus Packages for the Low Income

Youâll need to request any missing third stimulus payments on your 2021 tax return by claiming the Recovery Rebate Tax Credit.

This is the case if you received a partial amount or didnât previously qualify for the third stimulus payment.

Letâs say youâre single and your income for the 2020 and 2019 tax years exceeds the threshold . However, you lost your job in 2021, so your income drastically decreased. You can now claim the Recovery Rebate Tax Credit since your earnings fell below the threshold.

Families that added dependents may also be able to claim the credit.

In addition, a few lingering taxpayers who file taxes using ITINs may not have received payments for their eligible dependents who have Social Security numbers.

You need to complete the Recovery Rebate Tax Credit worksheet and submit it along with your 2021 tax return. If you use a tax software program, it should guide you through the process. Keep in mind, the IRS predicted a frustrating and slow tax season this year, so file your return as soon as possible.

Before completing the worksheet, you must know the amount of any third stimulus payments received for you, your spouse, and any dependents. The worksheet will also request your adjusted gross income for the year to determine your eligibility.

The IRS started mailing Letter 6475 to taxpayers in Januaryâthe letter confirms the total amount of the third stimulus payments received for the 2021 tax year.

First Round Of Economic Stimulus Checks: April 2020

The CAREs Act included a provision for a round of stimulus payments eligible tax-paying adults received a check of up to $1,200 while eligible dependents under 16 years of age received $500 each .

The payments were made to everyone earning under the income limits, which were set at Adjusted Gross Income of $75,000 with the stimulus check value reducing in a tapered fashion up to a maximum of $99,000 . The very first stimulus checks were paid into people’s bank accounts over the weekend of the 11 and 12 of April, either via direct deposit into individuals bank accounts, paper checks sent through the post or in some cases, through a prepaid debit card, the Economic Impact Payment Card which were sent out in late May/early June last year.

What To Do About Payment Scams

Though it’s uncommon, you may believe you’ve been scammed out of your payment or had it stolen. The Federal Trade Commission has a website where you can report a stolen stimulus check. If you’re worried about theft, you can sign up for a free USPS service that will send you a picture of every piece of mail coming your way — including your stimulus payment.

Bonus: Stimulus Checks And Undocumented Residents

In the past, Democrats proposed that undocumented US residents be eligible for stimulus relief funds if they pay taxes . This provision was part of the Heroes Act that passed the House of Representatives in two forms but didn’t become law.

With the third check, you’d need to have a Social Security number to be eligible, or be part of a mixed-status family where one household member has a Social Security number, if that’s approved. On Feb. 4, the Senate passed an amendment blocking stimulus payments for undocumented immigrants. Though the amendment isn’t binding, it seems unlikely that senators would change their position now that they’re on the record.

Here’s everything else you need to know about stimulus checks today, including how to claim any missing stimulus money on your 2020 tax return and how to contact the IRS about your missing payment.

A Child Tax Credit For 2021 That Beats Last Year’s By 50% Or More

The American Rescue Plan Act also greatly increases the child tax credit , at least for one year. Furthermore, many families will receive monthly checks of up to $300 for each qualifying child during the last six months of this year.

In 2020, dependent children had to be under age 17 for the taxpayer to qualify for the standard $2,000 child tax credit. A tax credit, unlike a payment, simply subtracts that amount from your tax bill.

The American Rescue Plan Act includes credits for 17-year-olds .

In addition to including millions more dependent children nationwide, the proposal expands the amount of the tax credit. For children ages 6-17, the credit will be $3,000, and $3,600 for each child under six.

To be eligible for the credit, the child needs to have a Social Security number and live with the filing parent or guardian for at least six months out of the year.

Higher-income parents will not qualify for the expanded credit. The eligibility follows the same formula for incomes as for the direct payment above, including the scaling. Families whose incomes are above the stimulus-bill caps will still receive the $2,000 tax credit they received in 2020.

More $1400 Payments Go Out Automatically After Aarp Urges Irs Ssa To Prioritize Federal Beneficiaries

| The IRS has sent a wave of pandemic stimulus checks to government retirees who normally dont file federal income taxes. Now the agency is sending payments to Veterans Affairs beneficiaries who dont normally file taxes. But the Social Security Administration says if you are a beneficiary and havent gotten your stimulus check, you need to file a 2020 tax return now to get any stimulus payments due to you.

To date, the IRS has delivered 164 million stimulus payments worth about $386 billion during the coronavirus relief mandated by the American Rescue Plan Act, which President Joe Biden signed on March 11.

Many low-income beneficiaries including recipients of Social Security retirement and disability benefits, as well as recipients of SSI benefits administered by the Social Security Administration arent required to file tax returns, and some of those payments were delayed. The IRS said it was waiting for updated information from the SSA on bank accounts and addresses of federal beneficiaries to ensure the stimulus payments reach eligible individuals.

AARP has pushed the IRS and the SSA to move more swiftly to get those checks to individuals who dont file federal income taxes.

On March 25 the SSA gave the IRS the updated information required to begin delivering stimulus checks to some 30 million federal beneficiaries still awaiting payments, Saul said.

Stimulus Update 202: These States Are Sending Out Payments In October

Although the federal government will not be issuing another stimulus check, several states, including California, Georgia and Virginia, are preparing to send out inflation relief payments in October 2022. AP

Several states are preparing to send out direct payments to their residents to provide inflation relief as Americans struggle to pay the rising costs of food, gas and housing.

Here are the states that will be sending out stimulus payments to their residents as soon as this month.

California

Starting in October, millions of middle class Californians will receive checks of up to $1,050 either by direct deposit or through the mail in the form of a debit card.

The state expects 95% of the payments to be disbursed before the end of the year, with the remainder of payments reportedly being sent out by Jan. 15, 2023.

Delaware

In May, Delaware began sending relief rebate payments of $300 to taxpayers who filed a return in 2020 due to a budget surplus.

Most Delaware residents received these payments in May, and couples filing jointly can get $300 each. The state government is continuing to send these payments out throughout the fall.

Residents can check the status of their rebate online here.

Georgia

Gov. Brian Kemp signed legislation to give out rebate payments of $250 for single filers, $375 for heads of household and $500 for those filing together.

This stimulus package also came from a budget surplus in the state.

What To Do If There’s A Direct Deposit Issue

The IRS tracking tool for the third stimulus check doesn’t allow you to add direct deposit information this time unless the IRS can’t deliver your payment. So if you have a problem, what do you do? Your check may have bounced back to the IRS if the agency tried to send your payment to a now-closed bank account or to a temporary prepaid debit card a tax preparer set up for you. If your payment was returned to the IRS, the agency will mail your check to the current address it has on file for you. If that check is returned, then the IRS will let you enter your banking information in the Get My Payment tool, the IRS said.

First, we suggest you call your bank or tax preparer — it never hurts to cover all your bases to confirm that an attempt was made to deposit money into a closed account or debit card.

Unfortunately, you’ll need to wait and monitor the Get My Payment tracker to keep tabs on your check delivery. We also recommend signing up for a free service to track your check to your mailbox.

How Is The Third Stimulus Check Calculated

The stimulus plan mandates the treasury to rely on 2019 and 2020 tax returns to calculate how much you could get for the third round of stimulus checks.

Congress approved limits based on adjusted gross income ranges. This means that taxpayers making less than the minimum threshold could get the full stimulus check, while those earning above it get reduced payments until they are fully phased out at higher incomes.

You can find your AGI on IRS form 1040. This is calculated by subtracting deductions like student loan interest, health savings account payments, and contributions to a traditional IRA from your gross income.

By contrast, your gross income is the total amount of money that you made during the tax year, including wages, dividends, capital gains, rental property income and other types of revenue.

Your 2019 taxes had to be filed by July 15, 2020. And your 2020 taxes are due by the extended deadline of May 17. You can read more about when to file your tax returns for the third stimulus check, and other IRS requirements in two tax sections below.

Stimulus Checks Could Be Seized To Cover Past Due Debt

If you owe child support or other debts, your first check was seized to cover those debts. The third check is subject to being taken by private debt collectors, but not the state or federal government. The same goes for the second payment, too, if you’re claiming missing money in a recovery rebate credit. You may receive a notice from the Bureau of the Fiscal Service or your bank if either of these scenarios happens.

In the case of the third check, we recommend calling your bank to confirm the garnishment request from creditors and ask for details about how long you have to file a request with a local court to stop the garnishment. If you think money has already been mistakenly seized from the first two checks, you can file a recovery rebate credit as part of your 2020 tax return — but only if you filed a tax extension.

You can track down your stimulus payment without picking up the phone.
