If you didnt get the third stimulus check, heres what you should do

The last 2021 stimulus payment has been issued, the Internal Revenue Service said Wednesday, but if you did not get yours, you are not out of luck yet.

According to the IRS, if you did not get a stimulus check but are eligible for one, you must use the recovery rebate credit on your 2021 income tax return to claim the $1,400-per-person economic impact payment.

The agency also reminds parents that if you had a child born in 2021 and that child did not receive a payment, you can also claim the payment via the recovery rebate.

If you are unsure about your payments, look for a Letter 6475 from the IRS that shows that you either had a payment sent to you, or that you are entitled to and can claim the recovery rebate credit on your 2021 tax return.

According to the agency, Families and individuals in the following circumstances, among others, may not have received the full amount of their third-round Economic Impact Payment because their circumstances in 2021 were different than they were in 2020.

These families and individuals may be eligible to receive more money by claiming the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit on their 2021 income tax return.

Individuals must claim the 2021 recovery rebate credit on their 2021 income tax return to get this payment, the IRS pointed out, because the agency will not automatically calculate the 2021 recovery rebate credit.

Bonus: Stimulus Checks And Undocumented Residents

In the past, Democrats proposed that undocumented US residents be eligible for stimulus relief funds if they pay taxes . This provision was part of the Heroes Act that passed the House of Representatives in two forms but didn’t become law.

With the third check, you’d need to have a Social Security number to be eligible, or be part of a mixed-status family where one household member has a Social Security number, if that’s approved. On Feb. 4, the Senate passed an amendment blocking stimulus payments for undocumented immigrants. Though the amendment isn’t binding, it seems unlikely that senators would change their position now that they’re on the record.

Payment Status Not Available: What Should You Do

The IRS Get My Payment tool will only let you input new direct deposit or bank account information if youre seeing a Need More Information status, breaking with tradition from previous stimulus check rounds. That works either by submitting a financial product that includes a routing and account number with it, whether it be a bank account or prepaid debit card.

The easiest way to make sure that the IRS has the most accurate picture of your financial situation and personal whereabouts is by submitting your 2020 tax return. You now have until May 17 to submit your 2020 tax return, after the IRS on March 17 announced it was delaying the deadline by a month.

However, given the unprecedented and unconventional nature of the current tax season, the Treasury Department and IRS may have already attempted to send out your payment before your tax information was processed.

You could also update your mailing address by submitting a Form 8822, Change of Address, or notifying the IRS orally of your move. But be prepared: You might experience delays waiting for confirmation, given that the IRS has already begun distributing these stimulus checks. As always, a direct deposit is the fastest way to guarantee you receive a payment.

Is The Third Stimulus Payment The Same As The Previous Two

Third Stimulus Checks: When and How Will You Get $1,400?

Although all 3 stimulus payments have been paid out for the same reason to support people who have been financially affected by the pandemic they do differ slightly. The third stimulus payment was actually expanded in some respects to benefit more people.

For example, in the initial two payouts, a dependent was listed as a child under the age of 17. All filers and their dependents would be entitled to the same $1,400. However, in the third stimulus payment, any type of dependent was eligible for the same $1,400 payment. This included elderly relatives, students, or disabled individuals.

The third stimulus payment was also more per person than the previous two. The relief packages throughout the earlier stages of the pandemic only offer $600 per person. This has more than doubled to the $1,400 per person in the third leg of the scheme as more people have shown the effects of the pandemic on the economy.

Would More People Qualify For A Check

Millions more Americans could qualify for a check if Mr. Bidens plan is passed as he originally envisioned. One of his goals is to expand the payments to adult dependents, who were excluded from the first two rounds of checks.

That exclusion meant college students who are claimed as dependents on their parents taxes, as well as disabled adults who are claimed as dependents, didnt qualify for checks. Because the two previous relief checks defined a child as someone younger than 17 years, they also excluded high school students who are 17 or 18. Mr. Bidens plan would extend the payments to older teenagers.

However, Mr. Bidens seeming willingness to target the checks to lower-income households could drastically reduce the number of households that would qualify for a check. For instance, the IRS said it sent 30 million payments to households earning more than $75,000 during the first round of stimulus checks. Under the income thresholds reported by the Washington Post $50,000 for single earners and $100,000 for married couples its likely many of those households wouldnt qualify for the full $1,400 check.

How Much Are The Payments Worth

The third round of stimulus payments is worth up to $1,400 per person. A married couple with two children, for example, can receive a maximum of $5,600.

Families are allowed to receive up to $1,400 for each dependent of any age. Earlier rounds limited the payments to dependents under the age of 17.

Generally, low- and middle-income US citizens and US resident aliens are eligible for either a full or partial third-round stimulus payment.

Individuals earning less than $75,000 of adjusted gross income, heads of households earning less than $112,500 and married couples earning less than $150,000 are eligible to receive the full amount of $1,400 per person.

But the payments gradually phase out as household income increases. Individuals who earn at least $80,000 a year of adjusted gross income, heads of households who earn at least $120,000 and married couples who earn at least $160,000 are not eligible for any money regardless of how many dependents they have.

Undocumented immigrants who dont have Social Security numbers are not eligible for the payments. But their spouses and children are eligible as long as they have Social Security numbers.

Can I Get A Stimulus Payment If Someone Claims Me As An Adult Dependent On Their Tax Return

$1,400 stimulus check update: When could you get your third payment? | FOX 5 DC

Some older people may count as a dependent on someone elses taxes, called a qualifying relative. For example, you may live with your children. In terms of stimulus check qualifications, the main tax filer wouldve had to claim you as a dependent on their tax form 1040.

A qualifying relative can be any age. To be counted as a qualifying relative on someones tax return, the person must meet four criteria. They

  • Dont count as a qualifying child dependent.
  • Live with the family member all year as a member of the household, or count as a relative who doesnt have to live with the family member all year .
  • Must have a gross income for the year of less than $4,200.
  • Must have more than half of their support during the year come from the family member.

If you were a dependent on someone elses taxes and were over the age of 16, you werent qualified for any stimulus money at all in the first or second round of stimulus checks. The new law, however, allows dependents of all ages to be eligible to add up to $1,400 to the households total payment.

There are a few reasons why some older adults may not have gotten a first or second stimulus check.

Highlights Of The Third Round Of Economic Impact Payments Irs Will Automatically Calculate Amounts

In general, most people will get $1,400 for themselves and $1,400 for each of their qualifying dependents claimed on their tax return. As with the first two Economic Impact Payments in 2020, most Americans will receive their money without having to take any action. Some Americans may see the direct deposit payments as pending or as provisional payments in their accounts before the official payment date of March 17.

Because these payments are automatic for most eligible people, contacting either financial institutions or the IRS on payment timing will not speed up their arrival. Social Security and other federal beneficiaries will generally receive this third payment the same way as their regular benefits. A payment date for this group will be announced shortly.

The third round of Economic Impact Payments will be based on the taxpayers latest processed tax return from either 2020 or 2019. This includes anyone who successfully registered online at IRS.gov using the agencys Non-Filers tool last year, or alternatively, submitted a special simplified tax return to the IRS. If the IRS has received and processed a taxpayers 2020 return, the agency will instead make the calculation based on that return.

For those who received EIP1 or EIP2 but dont receive a payment via direct deposit, they will generally receive a check or, in some instances, a prepaid debit card . A payment will not be added to an existing EIP card mailed for the first or second round of stimulus payments.
