Requesting A Filing Extension

Missing a stimulus check from the IRS?

If youre unable to file a 2021 tax return by the April 18 deadline , theres an easy way to buy some more time. Simply request an automatic six-month extension to file your return. That will give you until October 17 to submit your Form 1040 but youll still have to pay any tax that you expect to owe by April 18.

To get a filing extension, either submit Form 4868 or make an electronic tax payment to the IRS before the tax return filing deadline. There are also special rules that apply to Americans living abroad and people serving in a combat zone. See How to Get More Time to File Your Tax Return for more information about federal tax filing extensions.

If youre getting an extension for your federal tax return, you might want to get one for your state tax return, too . Check with your states tax agency for information about state tax return filing extensions.

The Procedure To Get Your Money Is A Little Different The Second Time Around

Were you entitled to a $600 stimulus check but haven’t received your money? The IRS only had until Jan. 15 to directly deposit payments or mail checks, and that deadline has come and gone. If you haven’t received your second stimulus payment yet, chances are that it isn’t going to appear in your bank account or mailbox at this point.

The good news is that if you qualify for a second stimulus check but didn’t receive one, you can still get your money. The bad news is that, unlike the first stimulus check issued in the Spring, there’s no way to directly request a payment.

In this article, we’ll discuss why your payment might not have arrived, how you can still get your payment, and what might happen to you if the incoming Biden administration follows through on its plan to add another $1,400 to the recent stimulus payments.

Missing Stimulus Money Claim The Recovery Rebate Credit

Technically, stimulus payments are an advance on a tax credit for the 2020 tax year. The IRS calls this credit the Recovery Rebate Credit. Unlike a tax deduction, which reduces your taxable income , a tax credit reduces the amount of tax you owe, dollar for dollar. Even better, and unlike most credits, the Recovery Rebate Credit will give you money back even if its more than the tax you owe or paid. For example, if you owe $700 in federal income taxes for 2020, a $1,200 stimulus tax credit would net you a $500 tax refund.

You need to file federal tax form 1040 or 1040-SR for 2020 to claim your Recovery Rebate Credit. Youll also need your IRS Notice 1444, the letter the IRS should have sent to you a few days after you got your first stimulus check, and IRS Notice 1444-B, which you would have gotten after your second stimulus check. If you didnt get a stimulus check, you dont need either notice.

Use the Recovery Rebate Credit worksheet on page 59 of the IRS instructions for the 1040 or 1040-SR to calculate how much stimulus money youre entitled to for the credit.

Can I Get My Stimulus Check In 2021

Many people moved in 2020, which means if you are one of those expecting a mailed check or pre-paid debit card, you may be concerned about the payment reaching you.

Unfortunately, the IRS’ “Get My Payment” site doesn’t allow people to update their addresses. Instead, the IRS is urging people to file their 2020 tax returns with their current address.

However, given that the deadline for filing 2020 tax returns has been pushed back to May 17 from its typical April 15 cutoff, there are likely millions of people who haven’t yet filed their tax forms and aren’t likely to do so before the IRS distributes most of its checks.

The IRS said that payments that can’t be delivered to eligible people will be returned to the tax agency. If that happens, the IRS’ “Get My Payment” site will show you a “Need More Information” message, which will then allow you to enter direct deposit information or ask for the stimulus check to be delivered on a pre-paid debit card.

What If Another Stimulus Payment Is Approved

The incoming Biden administration plans to include a $2,000 stimulus payment as part of its COVID-19 relief legislation, which would be structured as a $1,400 addition to the latest round of payments. But what if you didn’t get the second round of payments? Would these be claimable as Recovery Rebate Credits, as well? Unfortunately, we don’t know the details of how an additional stimulus payment would work at this time.

The good news is that Biden has indicated that his administration plans to move quickly with its initial relief efforts, which include adding $1,400 to the latest round of stimulus payments. While we don’t have many details about how those payments could be delivered and whether you could claim them as a Recovery Rebate Credit if you don’t automatically receive them, there’ll likely be some clarification sooner rather than later.

Stimulus Checks Arent Distributed At The Same Time

What to do if you haven’t gotten a stimulus check | VERIFY

Stimulus checks arent distributed all at once. That means your neighbor, cousin or sister may get a stimulus check before you. If you have a bank account on file with the IRS, youre likely to get your stimulus check faster through direct deposit. However, if you dont, then it may take longer to get a paper stimulus check or debit card. Like the first and second stimulus checks, the third stimulus check will be sent in batches over time. If you get Social Security benefits, you also may not have received a stimulus check yet. Why? Until this week, the U.S. Social Security Administration didnt share contact information for 30 million Social Security recipients with the IRS, which has delayed the disbursement of their stimulus checks.

Millions Of People May Still Be Eligible For Covid

Throughout the pandemic, IRS and Treasury struggled to get COVID-relief payments into the hands of some peopleespecially those with lower-incomes, limited internet access, or experiencing homelessness. Based on IRS and Treasury data, there could be between 9-10 million eligible individuals who have not yet received those payments.

Relief might be in sight for more families and individuals. Individuals with little or no income, and therefore not required to pay taxes, have until to complete a simplified tax return to get their payments. Taxpayers who missed the April 15 deadline have until . These IRS pages, irs.gov/coronavirus/EIP and ChildTaxCredit.gov, have more information on how to complete and submit a tax return.

Todays WatchBlog post looks at our work on COVID-19 payments to individuals, including the Child Tax Credit and next steps for people who may still be eligible to receive theirs.

Who can get a COVID-19 stimulus payment or a Child Tax Credit?

From April 2020 to December 2021, the federal government made direct COVID-19 stimulus payments to individuals totaling $931 billion. Congress authorized three rounds of payments that benefited an estimated 165 million eligible Americans. Generally, U.S. citizens with income below $75,000 or married couples with an income below $150,000 were eligible for all three payments and the full amount of each payment.

What more can Treasury and IRS do to get the word out about how eligible individuals can get their payments?

Why Did I Receive A Debit Card

The IRS issued millions of debit cards to taxpayers in lieu of second stimulus checks, but will be sending out fewer debit cards out for the third payment. The prepaid Visa debit cards, issued by MetaBank, are called Economic Impact Payment cards. Your EIP card will arrive in a white envelope with “Economic Impact Payment Card” in the return address. You’ll need to activate the card by calling the phone number that comes with the card and choosing a 4-digit PIN number.

You can use your EIP card for purchases or use it to withdraw cash . You can also transfer the funds from your EIP card directly into your own bank account, after you register for online access.

If you use the card wisely, it will be free, but there are some fees to be aware of. If you use an out-of-network ATM or a bank teller to withdraw cash, you may need to pay a fee, and if you check the balance of the debit card, at either an in-network ATM or an out-of-network ATM, you will be charged a small fee.

The IRS has announced that the vast majority of taxpayers should receive their third stimulus payment by direct deposit this time.

Still Don’t Have A Stimulus Check Here’s How To Track Yours

While major banks in the U.S. started delivering $1,400 stimulus checks in March, the federal relief payments continue to arrive at millions of households struggling to make ends meet amid the coronavirus-hobbled economy.

The Internal Revenue Service has delivered more than 165 million payments, with a total value of approximately $388 billion, the agency said Wednesday. The latest round includes 1 million payments, with the IRS noting they have an official payment date of May 12. That means the most recent recipients will receive a direct deposit on Wednesday, or soon get a paper check or pre-paid debit card in the mail.

The timing and delivery of checks has been a cause of anxiety for some people, especially for those who receive government benefits such as Social Security and don’t typically file taxes. The IRS prioritized sending checks to people who have already filed their 2019 or 2020 tax returns, since the agency was able to quickly verify eligibility based on income and also determine where to mail or direct deposit the checks.

The agency said it’s sending another 500,000 payments to eligible people who recently filed a tax return but for whom it didn’t previously have information to issue a stimulus check.
