Didnt Get The First And Second Payments
If you didnt get a first and second Economic Impact Payment or got less than the full amount, you may be eligible to claim the 2020 Recovery Rebate Credit and must file a 2020 tax return. Alternatively, eligible people who dont normally have to file a tax return and who didnt file a 2019 or 2020 tax return or use the Non-Filers tool for stimulus payments last year can use the Child Tax Credit Non-filer Sign-up Tool. You can still file after the tax deadline.
The Child Tax Credit Non-filer Sign Up tool allows you to provide the required information needed to deposit monthly payments of the advance Child Tax Credit directly into your bank account. The IRS will also use this information to calculate and send any resulting 2020 Recovery Rebate Credit and the third stimulus payment. Eligible people can expect separate payments for the Recovery Rebate Credit, the third Economic Impact Payment and the advance Child Tax Credit.
Get all the benefits youre entitled to under the law, including tax credits such as the 2020 Recovery Rebate Credit, the Child Tax Credit, and the Earned Income Tax Credit. Filing a 2020 tax return will also assist the IRS in determining whether someone is eligible for advance payments of the 2021 Child Tax Credit.

What Information Do I Need About My Stimulus Checks When I File My Taxes
When you received each of your stimulus checks, also known as an Economic Impact Payment, you should have received a Notice 1444. The notice has information about your stimulus check and should be kept with your important tax records like your W-2s or 1099s.
It is possible you received more than one Notice 1444 if you received more than one stimulus check payment. For the first stimulus check you should have received a Notice 1444 and for the second stimulus check you should have received a Notice 1444-B.
When you sit down to file your taxes, these Notice 1444s will be especially helpful if you were eligible, but didnt receive the first or second stimulus check or received only a portion of it. The notice includes information like the amount you were issued before any offsets in 2020, which you will need to claim the recovery rebate credit to get any additional stimulus dollars you are owed from the first and second stimulus.
For tax year 2021, you should have received a Letter 6475. This letter will have the total amount of your stimulus payment in 2021 . If you didnt get the full third stimulus amount you were eligible for, then you may be able to claim those dollars through the recovery rebate credit on your 2021 tax return.

Who Is Eligible For The Economic Impact Payment
Tax filers with adjusted gross income up to $75,000 for individuals and up to $150,000 for married couples filing joint returns will receive the full payment. For filers with income above those amounts, the payment amount is reduced by $5 for each $100 above the $75,000/$150,000 thresholds. Single filers with income exceeding $99,000 and $198,000 for joint filers with no children are not eligible. Social Security recipients and railroad retirees who are otherwise not required to file a tax return are also eligible and will not be required to file a return.
Eligible taxpayers who filed tax returns for either 2019 or 2018 will automatically receive an economic impact payment of up to $1,200 for individuals or $2,400 for married couples and up to $500 for each qualifying child.

Its that time of year again. With 2021 now over, it signals the moment to compile your tax return in the United States.
This time, there could be extra money on the line up to 1,400 dollars per person to be precise if you qualify for a federal economic stimulus payment, which Congress passed as people struggled financially during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Internal Revenue Service will be dispatching Letter 6475 sometime this month to help potential claimants understand their eligibility.
The letter applies to the stimulus payments that were created in March 2021 and were paid through the end of last month.
If youre eligible for more stimulus money, it can be claimed on the tax return youll file this year.
Most people already received their payments, which were based on income reported on their 2019 or 2020 tax return.
But several factors such as if your income dropped last year and went below the eligibility levels or your family added a child in 2021 could mean additional payments this year for whats called the Recovery Rebate Credit.
If youre due for a payment, youll have to file a 2021 tax return this year, even if you usually do not.
The IRS has also been sending Letter 6419 to families who received the enhanced child tax credit last year.
This letter will continue to be sent out through the end of January.

You Must File A Return To Claim The Credit
It’s worth pointing out that the only way you can claim the recovery rebate credit is to file a 2021 tax return. This is true even if you’re not otherwise required to file a return . So, if you qualify for the credit, make sure you file a tax return this year.
For most people, tax returns for the 2021 tax year are due by April 18, 2022. If you can’t file by that date, request an extension to file your tax return, which will push your filing deadline to October 17. Depending on your income, you may even be able to file your tax return for free.
If you don’t remember how much you actually received last year as a third stimulus check, look at Notice 1444-C, which the IRS sent you last year. If you didn’t keep that notice , don’t worry there are other ways to get the information. The IRS should have sent you a Letter 6475 earlier this year that contains your third stimulus check amount. You can also get the amount through an IRS online account or by requesting a 2021 account transcript website).
Advanced Child Tax Credit
Most American families with children received monthly advanced Child Tax Credits in 2021. These payments ranged from $250 to $300 each and arrived in bank accounts around the country from July through December.
Like stimulus checks, Child Tax Credit payments are not taxable. If you find that your refund is less than normal this year, this may help explain why:
- In a “typical” year, you receive a $2,000 credit per eligible child. If you have three children, that’s a $6,000 credit.
- Let’s say your three children are ages 6, 8, and 10. Thanks to the American Rescue Plan, the total credit was increased to $3,000 per child. If you received $250 per month between July and December 2021, you’ve already received $1,500 of the $3,000 due .
- You file for the other half of the Child Tax Credit on your 2021 tax return. In other words, you file for a $1,500 credit per child rather than the $2,000 for which you would normally file. So, instead of receiving a $6,000 credit this year, the most you receive is $4,500.
- While it may appear as though you’re being “shorted,” you’re actually money ahead. In an average year, you would have received $6,000 for three eligible children. Because of the advanced Child Tax Credit, you’ll receive $9,000 — just not as much as normal at tax time.
Bottom line: If you receive a smaller refund, it may be due to receiving part of the Child Tax Credit in advance. You pay no taxes on advanced Child Tax Credits.

Assuming all of the information on your tax returns is correct, you will not repay the check next spring.
You may even receive more money when you file your 2020 taxes. While the checks are based off of your 2019 or 2018 returns to get you money now, they are technically credits for 2020 taxes, per the Tax Foundation. If it turns out that you should receive a larger credit based on your 2020 adjusted gross income , then you will receive the difference next year. If a taxpayers income drops in 2020, they will be eligible for any remaining rebate credit they were not able to claim using their 2019 or 2018 return, writes the Tax Foundation.
On the other hand, you will not be penalized by the IRS if your 2020 AGI is higher than this years, according to the Tax Foundation. If the amount of a credit a taxpayer qualifies for in 2020 is less than it was based on their 2019 return, it does not have to be paid back.
