Avoid Processing Delays When Claiming The 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit

The IRS strongly encourages people to have all the information they need to file an accurate return to avoid processing delays. If the return includes errors or is incomplete, it may require further review while the IRS corrects the error, which may slow the tax refund.

To claim the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit, individuals will need to know the total amount of their third-round Economic Impact Payment, including any Plus-Up Payments, they received. People can view the total amount of their third-round Economic Impact Payments through their individual Online Account. The IRS will also send Letter 6475 through March to those who were issued third-round payments confirming the total amount for tax year 2021. For married individuals filing a joint return with their spouse, each spouse will need to log into their own Online Account or review their own letter for their portion of their couple’s total payment.

The IRS urges recipients of stimulus payments to carefully review their tax return before filing. Having this payment information available while preparing the tax return will help individuals determine if they are eligible to claim the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit for missing third-round stimulus payments. If eligible for the credit, they must file a 2021 tax return. Using the total amount of the third payments from the individual’s online account or Letter 6475 when filing a tax return can reduce errors and avoid delays in processing while the IRS corrects the tax return.

When Should I Get My Payment

Irs 1040 Form Line 8B

The IRS was given hard and fast deadlines to send the two rounds of Economic Impact Payments out to American families. The first round of payments had to be sent out by December 31, 2020. The second round had to be sent out by January 15, 2021.

What this means: If you have not received the first or second round of payments yet, then you will not be getting them in advance. The good news is that you can still do something to get these payments. Read below.

What Are The Most Recent Changes To Form 1040

The biggest change to Federal Form 1040 is that a new Line 30 has been added for the Recovery Rebate Credit. This is for taxpayers who didn’t receive payments or could have received a larger payment from the government when economic impact payments went out in 2021. These taxpayers can claim that amount as a refundable credit here.

For 2020 only, the “Amount You Owe” section of Form 1040, states: “Schedule H and Schedule SE filers, line 37 may not represent all of the taxes you owe for 2020.” This means that since employers were allowed to defer payments of the employer’s share of social security tax due to the CARES Act, this deferred amount will be reported in the payments section of Form 1040, Schedule 3, Line 12e. It will be entered as a “Deferral for certain Schedule H or SE filers.”

Another change to Form 1040 that showed up in 2020 is that there are three lines to report withholdings. On Form 1040, Line 25a is for W-2 withholdings, Line 25b is for 1099 withholdings, and Line 25c is for other withholdings.

What About People With Itins

You still need a work-authorizing Social Security Number to be eligible for this stimulus. However, there are important changes since the first round of stimulus checks.

  • In the first stimulus rollout, any non-SSN holder on a joint return made everyone on that return ineligible. Big change: The new rounds of stimulus has corrected this problem. If you filed a joint return with a non-SSN holder, you are still eligible for the stimulus. See the below hypotheticals.
  • Situation: A single tax filer has an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number but no Social Security number .
  • This person is ineligible for the stimulus.
  • Situation: A spouse has a Social Security number and files married filing jointly on a tax return with a spouse who has an ITIN.
  • The SSN holder is now eligible to get a payment. If they have children on the tax return that have SSNs, these children will be eligible for the payment for each qualifying child.
  • Situation: Two ITIN holders file a joint return and claim young children who have SSNs.
  • The children who have SSNs are eligible for the payment.

What Is The Recovery Rebate Credit

The Recovery Rebate Credit makes it possible for any eligible individual who did not receive an Economic Impact Payment to claim the missing amount on the following tax return.

When you file your 2021 tax return, you can use the Recovery Rebate Credit to claim any missing amounts from the third EIP.

How To Calculate The Recovery Rebate Credit

Checks For Those On Social Security! $1,400 Stimulus Check Update!

Similar to the eligibility rules, calculation of the 2021 recovery rebate credit is generally the same as the calculation of third-round stimulus checks, except that they’re based on information from different sources. Third stimulus checks were generally based on information from either your 2019 or 2020 tax return, whichever was most recently filed when the IRS began processing your payment. If you didn’t file a return for either of those two years, the IRS sent a third stimulus check based on whatever information, if any, was available to it. In many cases, that information came from the Social Security Administration , Railroad Retirement Board, or Veterans Administration if you receive benefits from one of those federal agencies. However, the amount of your recovery rebate credit is based entirely on information found on your 2021 tax return.

As with the stimulus checks, calculating the amount of your recovery rebate credit starts with a “base” amount. For most people, the base amount for the 2021 credit is $1,400. For married couples filing a joint tax return, the base amount is $2,800 . Then you add on $1,400 for each dependent claimed on your 2021 return.

Finally, after the credit is reduced , you need to subtract the total third-round stimulus check and “plus-up” payments you received last year from the credit amount.

Here’s an example of how the calculation works:
