Seniors And The Fourth Stimulus Evaluation
Seniors, in particular, are battling hard for the fourth stimulus check.
The Senior Citizens League has asked Congress to deliver another $1,400 payment to Social Security recipients.
Because they live on a fixed income, their needs are larger.
For 2022, the COLA rise, which would raise their monthly income, was 5.9%.
Other Assistance For Social Security Claimants
The cost of living is looked at by the Social Security Administration, which then changes Social Security benefits as needed. Since the 1950s, this method has been used to help people on fixed incomes deal with inflation.
The COLA increase will affect at least 70 million Americans. Even though Social Security recipients get raises every year, high inflation has cut their buying power by about 40% since 2000.
In other Social Security news, Supplemental Security Income payments have gone up to $841 per month in 33 states. We also tell you how to get the most out of your Social Security benefits when you retire, including ways to get more money.

When Could Stimulus Payments Start
Following approval of the bill on March 11th, millions of Americans will start seeing the third stimulus payments by mid-to-late March 2021 per the estimated IRS payment schedule and official Biden administration guidance. Comments below confirm these are going out now. You can also check the IRS Get May Payment tool for the latest status of your payment. See payment FAQs from the second round of payments, which will also apply for the most part this time around.
Due to the fact that payments are going out in the middle of tax season it may be very hard to get a hold of someone in the IRS to help with payment issues and you will likely have to wait until after April 15th to follow up on issues.

Injured Spouse Claim And Spousal Claims
The IRS also stated that If you are married filing jointly and you filed an injured spouse claim with your 2019 tax return , half of the total payment will be sent to each spouse and your spouses stimulus check payment will be offset only for past-due child support.
There is no need to file another injured spouse claim for the payment. I have received dozens of comments on this this, so hopefully this answers the questions many have had based on official IRS guidance.
Note that if you were current with your child support payments at the time of the stimulus eligibility determination but fell behind afterwards due to a COVID-19 related job loss, you would still be eligible to get the full stimulus payment.
Updating Direct Deposit Information
This question has come up a lot in the hundreds of comments to this article. The IRS has setup a portal for individuals to provide their updated banking information to receive payments via direct deposit as opposed to checks in the mail.
The IRS does recommend that 2018 Filers who need to change their account information or mailing address, file 2019 taxes electronically as soon as possible. That is the only way to let us know your new information..
Why Are Social Security Veterans And Other Federal Beneficiaries Waiting For $1400 Stimulus Checks

The issue with the payments came to the attention of lawmakers prompting the House and Ways Committee to inquire with the Internal Revenue Service and the Social Security Administration . They discovered that the IRS had not yet received payment files from the SSA that the tax agency needed to send out the $1,400 direct stimulus payments. This prompted the committee to give the SSA a 24-hour ultimatum to send the files and the SSA complied.
The Social Security Administration responded that it had been working tirelessly with our counterparts at IRS to provide to them the information they need to issue payments to our beneficiaries. The SSA in the statement said that it had managed to send the IRS the necessary information a week earlier than during the first round of payments last year.
The statement explained that part of the reason for the delay was the need to update the files the IRS will use as to protect the integrity of the EIP program. adding Social Security employees have literally worked day and night with IRS staff to ensure that the electronic files of Social Security and SSI recipientsare complete, accurate, and ready to be used to issue payments.
IRS projects stimulus payments to non-filer Social Security and other federal beneficiaries will be disbursed later this week â

What Other Aid Is Out There
While a fourth stimulus check is improbable, more direct payments to Americans have already been signed into law. The American Rescue Plan includes an improved Child Tax Credit and extended unemployment benefits.
Under the revised Child Tax Credit, the Internal Revenue Service is paying out $3,600 per year for each child up to five years old and $3,000 per year for each child ages six through 17. Monthly payments of up to $300 per child started July 15 and will continue through December of 2021. The remainder is to be issued when the recipient files their 2021 taxes. The benefit does not depend on the recipients current tax burden. In other words, qualifying families will receive the full amount, regardless of how much or little they owe in taxes. Payments start to phase out beyond a $75,000 annual income for individuals and beyond $150,000 for married couples. The more generous credit will apply only for 2021, though Biden has stated his interest in extending it through 2025.
Additional money in peoples pockets from any proposed plan is still hypothetical, of course. Nothing has found its way through Congress yet.

The American Rescue Plan Act Lifts Over 4 million US Children Out of Poverty and is protecting our children and supporting life
The American Rescue Plan Act has helped millions of families stay out of poverty in just a few months. Enacted as part of the Covid-19 stimulus package in March 2021, the recent changes have reduced child poverty from 15.8% in June to 11.90%, a decline of 3 million American children living in poverty, according to The Economist. A recent analysis by the Urban Institute also finds that if this policy became permanent, it would Of the six states which would benefit the most, four are Republican leaning states like Texas, Mississippi, Louisiana and Florida.
The Child Tax Credit has also been expanded to include families who previously would have earned too low an income to receive the benefit. This change alone is estimated to help pull another 23 million children of color out of poverty.
Many economists are already saying that the American Rescue Plan Act will do more to protect our children than nearly every other policy over the last 50 years and has helped protect childrens lives across the country.

Social Security Combined Trust Funds Projection Remains The Same Says Board Of Trusteesprojections In 2020 Report Do Not Reflect The Potential Effects Of The Covid
The Social Security Board of Trustees today released its annual report on the long-term financial status of the Social Security Trust Funds. The combined asset reserves of the Old-Age and Survivors Insurance and Disability Insurance Trust Funds are projected to become depleted in 2035, the same as projected last year, with 79 percent of benefits payable at that time.
The OASI Trust Fund is projected to become depleted in 2034, the same as last years estimate, with 76 percent of benefits payable at that time. The DI Trust Fund is estimated to become depleted in 2065, extended 13 years from last years estimate of 2052, with 92 percent of benefits still payable.
In the 2020 Annual Report to Congress, the Trustees announced:
- The asset reserves of the combined OASI and DI Trust Funds increased by $2.5 billion in 2019 to a total of $2.897 trillion.
- The total annual cost of the program is projected to exceed total annual income, for the first time since 1982, in 2021 and remain higher throughout the 75-year projection period. As a result, asset reserves are expected to decline during 2021. Social Securitys cost has exceeded its non-interest income since 2010.
- The year when the combined trust fund reserves are projected to become depleted, if Congress does not act before then, is 2035 the same as last years projection. At that time, there would be sufficient income coming in to pay 79 percent of scheduled benefits.

An influential non-partisan group that lobbies on behalf of senior citizens is continuing to push Congress for a fourth stimulus payment to benefit senior citizens.
The Senior Citizens League recently sent a letter to members of Congress urging them to consider a targeted stimulus designed to benefit Social Security recipients. The group is asking for a $1,400 payment.
Weve heard from thousands of them who have exhausted their retirement savings, who have started eating just one meal a day, started cutting their pills in half because they cant afford their prescription drugs, to list just a few of the drastic steps so many have had to take because of what inflation has done to them this year, the letter from TSCL Chairman Rick Delaney said.
A $1,400 stimulus check for Social Security recipients, Delany noted, would be a way to get extra non-taxable income into the hands of senior citizens.
We believe that a special stimulus for Social Security recipients could help defray the higher costs some would face if next years COLA bumps them into a higher tax bracket, causing higher tax rates on their income and surcharges to their Medicare Part B premiums, he said.
Democrats In Congress Are Pushing For A Fourth Stimulus Check

Democrats in the House and the Senate are pushing for another round of stimulus payments for Americans still reeling financially during the pandemic.
Some Democratic lawmakers are also urging Biden to extend unemployment benefits and a child tax credit payment program, in addition to recurring stimulus payments. In March, Congress extended a weekly $300 unemployment payment until early September.
We urge you to include recurring direct payments and automatic unemployment insurance extensions tied to economic conditions in your Build Back Better long-term economic plan, 21 senators wrote in a letter to Biden in late March.
