California Golden State Stimulus II: Most direct deposit payments to be issued by this week

You must have lived in California for at least half of the 2020 tax year and filed your state tax return by Oct. 15, 2021, to qualify.

California taxpayers who filed individually and made $250,000 or less are eligible for the Middle Class Tax refund, as are couples who filed jointly and made $500,000 or less. According to the Franchise Tax Board, an estimated 25 million Californians qualify for a refund. Individuals who earned over $250,000 in 2020 — and couples who made more than $500,000 combined — are not eligible for the refund, nor is anyone who was claimed as a dependent in the 2020 tax year.

In addition, you must have lived in the state of California for at least half of the 2020 tax year, have filed your state tax return by Oct. 15, 2021, and still be a California resident on the date your payment is issued.

Democrats Push To Make Covid Relief Bill Aid To The Poor Permanent

U.S. Senate Democrats will push to make permanent two provisions of President Joe Bidens covid-19 relief bill that provide emergency enhanced benefits for the poor through food assistance and child tax credits, two leading lawmakers said on Sunday.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said that making enhanced child tax credits permanent is an important goal for Democrats, as they seek to move forward with bold new initiatives that also include legislation to upgrade U.S. infrastructure.

Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, Schumers fellow New York Democrat, called separately for enhancements for a nutrition program aimed at women, infants and children in the $1.9 trillion bill to be extended indefinitely.

Bidens legislation temporarily increased the value of the programs cash vouchers for fruits and vegetables from $9 per month for children and $11 for women to $35 per month for both.

The bill also expands the U.S. federal child tax credit for one year from a partially refundable $2,000 per child to a fully refundable $3,600 credit for children under 6 and $3,000 for children aged 6 to 17, a move that experts say will significantly decrease child poverty in the United States.

Thats one of the most important things we can do. We can change America, if we make them permanent, Schumer told MSNBC.

It will be so good for these kids, their families, but for all of America and our economy.

Can I Track My California Inflation Relief Check

Posted: Oct 19, 2022 / 06:51 AM PDT

As the state continues to send out the direct payments, is there a way to track the progress of your check?

The short answer is no, the Franchise Tax Board says. But to combat frustration with the vague timelines originally laid out, the agency has released more details on when you can expect to receive your direct deposit or debit card.

To find out when youll see your tax refund, you first need to determine if youre getting a direct deposit or a debit card. If you filed your California state taxes electronically in 2020 and received a refund by direct deposit, youll likely get a direct deposit in this case, too. Pretty much everyone else will get a debit card, the state says.

Second, youll need to determine if you received a Golden State Stimulus payment last year, in either round 1 or round 2. Golden State Stimulus recipients of 2021 are first in line to get the Middle Class Tax Refund in 2022.

Theres one final complication: Debit cards are being sent out in smaller batches, organized in alphabetical order by last name. GSS recipients are first up, broken into four groups getting their debit cards in the mail between Oct. 24 and Dec. 10.

California Stimulus Checks: Final Round Being Distributed

The final round of the Golden State Stimulus II payments is being mailed out to qualifying California residents. Families that met the eligibility requirements receive $600 plus $500 for dependents.

With this final round of payments, California has now issued more than 8 million checks and deposits, valued at more than $5.9 billion.

The second round of stimulus checks for California residents was part of Gov. Gavin Newsoms $100 billion budget that he signed into law in July. As part of the plan, the state expected to provide billions in coronavirus relief to 15.2 million California households or about two-thirds of the states taxpayers.

The Golden State Stimulus is key to lifting up those hit hardest by the pandemic and supporting Californias economic recovery, putting money directly in the hands of folks who will spend it on basic needs and within their local communities, Newsom said in a statement at the time.

What’s happening

Californians started receiving Middle Class Tax Refunds in October but the rollout expected to continue through mid-January.

Why it matters

Eligible taxpayers are receiving between $200 and $1,050.

California taxpayers started receiving stimulus checks October. The Middle Class Tax Refund, or MCTR, was part of Gov. Gavin Newsom’s $12 billion economic relief effort. As of Dec. 9, more than 6.9 million direct deposits had been issued and 6.8 million debit cards had been sent out, according to the Franchise Tax Board. But millions of residents are still waiting for the one-time payout — which can be for as much as $1,050 — and officials say they don’t expect to finish sending out funds until mid-January.
