The Claim: A Fourth Stimulus Payment Worth $2000 Per Person Will Arrive By Memorial Day Weekend

Stimulus check increase from $600 to $2000 approved by House after Trump demand

Millions of Americans are still watching mailboxes and bank accounts for direct payments from the latest COVID-19 relief legislation Congress passed earlier this year.

President Joe Biden recently sent a mailer to taxpayers about the third round of payments, worth as much as $1,400 per person, that was part of the $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief package Congress passed earlier this year.

This week, the IRS said it was sending another 1.1 million payments in the form of direct deposits and paper checks.

But even before the federal government can finish doling out the third wave since the start of the pandemic, discussion is brewing and misinformation circulating about the possibility of a fourth round.

In that has been shared nearly 250 times, a user wrote that a fourth stimulus payment worth $2,000 per person would be arriving by Memorial Day weekend. A child tax credit of $300 to $500 a month would run from July to December, according to the post.

The post is wrong on several levels.

Congress hasnt approved a fourth round of direct payments. And while the IRS will start sending out monthly payments for a larger child tax credit in July to some families, the user has the incorrect amounts.

The Facebook user who shared the post did not respond to a request for comment.

$1400 Stimulus Checks Approved Along Party Lines By House Ways And Means Committee

The House Ways and Means Committee voted to approve a section of President Joe Biden‘s $1.9 trillion stimulus plan including $1,400 stimulus checks on Thursday.

The panel approved a portion of the package worth hundreds of billions of dollars, mostly consisting of the direct payments, in a 24-18 vote along party lines after two days of debating the legislation. The proposal now moves to the House Budget Committee. If it passes through the House in a floor vote that is expected later this month, Democrats in the Senate could approve the proposal without any Republican support under the budget reconciliation process.

“Over the last two days, the Ways and Means Committee has considered aggressive, science-based solutions that will deliver the urgent relief our country so desperately needs,” Rep. Richard E. Neal , the committee chairman, said in a statement. “From unemployment benefits to health care affordability, the work we’ve done is substantial, and it is exactly what the American people have been calling on us to do to meet this moment.”

“To my colleagues on the Committee, the amazing Committee staff, and the many others who worked around the clock to make this happen, thank you for putting the American people first and showing them that help is on the way,” continued Neal. “I look forward to this package passing Congress and President Biden signing it into law.”

How Is Your Income Calculated For The Stimulus Payments

The IRS will use the AGI on your most recent processed tax return on file. While 55.7 million Americans have already filed their taxes for 2020, millions still havent filedand the IRS is also significantly behind on processing tax returns.

The IRS will use your 2020 tax return if it has been processed by the date they submit your check. If your 2020 return is not available yet, they will use the information from your 2019 tax return.

Note: On March 17, the IRS announced an extension to file your 2020 taxes. Tax returns will now be due by May 17. But if you expect that you may receive more in stimulus money based on your 2020 taxes, and you have not yet received confirmation of your stimulus payment status , you should file as soon as possible.

If you are not required to file your taxes and successfully used the IRSs non-filers tool or completed a special simplified tax return in 2020, no action is needed on your part to receive your payment.

If you do not qualify based on your 2019 income, but you will qualify based upon your 2020 income, consider filing your taxes as soon as possible. Depending on your timing, your stimulus eligibility may be determined before your 2020 tax return is processed. However, the law includes a provision to make supplemental payments in September to ensure people who qualify do not need to wait until the 2021 tax season.

More Third Stimulus Payment Money For Some In 2022

Parents who added a child in 2021 could be getting up to $1,400 after they file their 2021 taxes this coming spring thanks to the American Rescue Plan. The money won’t come as a direct check but will be part of the overall tax return.

The 2021 Economic Impact Payment — colloquially known as the third stimulus check — was actually an advance on what is called the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit. What that means is that the $1,400 stimulus check most individual Americans received in 2021 is, in fact, money they would have gotten after filing their taxes in the spring of 2022 as a Recovery Rebate Credit.

In other words, millions of Americans already got part of their tax refund 12 months early.

“The bottom line is that’s money that’s going out almost immediately to millions of people as a tax credit in advance of putting it on a tax return in the next year,” said Raphael Tulino, IRS spokesman.

However, the IRS was going off of 2019 or 2020 tax returns for its information on the third EIP. It was using that information to determine if taxpayers would get stimulus money for their dependents. If eligible parents had a child born into their family in 2021, they can request the Recovery Rebate Credit on their taxes to get the payment for that child.

It gets more complicated with adoption because all the paperwork and processes to finalize the adoption must be completed first.

This does not pertain to the first or second stimulus payments that were paid in 2020.

  • Yes,unless you are eligible for relief. If youdo not owe child support butyouare married tosomeonewhoowes child support, you may need to file an Injured Spouse Claim and Allocation -Form 8379

  • In some instances, the IRS offsets a portion of the payment sent to a spouse who filed an injured spouse claim if it has been offset by the non-injured spouses past-due child support. The FAQ on the IRS stimulus FAQ www.irs.gov/coronavirus/economic-impact-payment-information-center website states: The IRS is aware that in some instances a portion of the payment sent to a spouse who filed an injured spouse claim with his or her 2019 tax return has been offset by the non-injured spouses past-due child support. The IRS is working with the Bureau of the Fiscal Service and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Child Support Enforcement, to resolve this issue as quickly as possible. If you filed an injured spouse claim with your return and are impacted by this issue, you do not need to take any action. The injured spouse will receive their unpaid half of the total payment when the issue is resolved.

Second Stimulus Checks: Will $1200 Payments Be Approved This Week

WASHINGTON Both Republicans and Democrats want to send Americans a second round of stimulus checks as part of the next coronavirus aid package. While negotiations in Washington didnt advance much over the last few days, were finally hearing about productive conversations that could put you closer to receiving the next $1,200 direct payment.

Talks on the huge relief measure resumed on Saturday, focused on restoring a newly expired $600-per-week supplemental unemployment benefit.

Principal negotiators Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, White House chief of staff Mark Meadows, top Senate Democrat Chuck Schumer, and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi convened again in hopes of breaking a week long stalemate.

Speaking to reporters, negotiators on both sides said that the talks were productive and would continue on Monday. But during an interview Sunday, Pelosi made it clear the progress doesnt mean everyone is on the same page.

We must defeat this virus. And that is one of the points that we still have not come to any agreement on, Pelosi said.

President Donald Trump is eager for an agreement, but talks so far have not yielded progress.

The administration is willing to extend the $600 jobless benefit, at least in the short term, but is balking at other demands of Democratic negotiators like aid for state and local governments, food stamp increases, and assistance to renters and homeowners.

Stimulus Blamed For High Inflation

VERIFY: Are you getting a 4th stimulus check?

The final round of $1,400 direct payments which started in March 2021 along with the massive amounts of covid-19 relief funds injected into the US economy have been blamed for the higher-than-normal inflation afflicting the nation. The Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco looked at the effect of the American Rescue Plan specifically on inflation.

It found that Bidens stimulus is temporarily ratcheting up inflation, but not causing overheating as has been suggested. Their analysis found that the ARP, is expected to cause inflation to increase by about 0.3 percentage point in 2021 and by a bit more than 0.2 percentage point in 2022. The impact in 2023 is negligible.

Other factors are helping push up prices on just about everything, a major source has been disruptions to supply chains caused by the pandemic. This caused manufacturers to scramble to secure scarce supplies of inputs to make their products. Americans in turn have been scooping up consumer goods with excess savings they acquired during the lockdown increasing demand on limited supplies.
