Second Stimulus Check Problems

The IRS began sending out stimulus checks for Social Security beneficiaries, including those who are part of the SSI and SSDI programs, on April 7. It began sending payments to people who receive veteran benefits and don’t typically file taxes on April 14. If you’re part of one of these groups and haven’t gotten your check yet, it may be on the way soon.

The Social Security Administration has also advised people not to contact the SSA about problems. It’s possible you may need to use one of the strategies above, depending on what the trouble is.

How Can I Get My Stimulus Check

The IRS says people will automatically get their payments in the second round of stimulus checks. One way to track the status of your payment is to visit the “Get My Payment” site.

As with the first round, you will need to enter a few pieces of personally identifiable information, such as your Social Security number, date of birth and address. The site will then provide you with the status of both your first and second stimulus payments.

Getting A Missing Check Can Be Difficult But Worth The Trouble

by Adam Shell, AARP, February 4, 2022

Nobody wants to leave money on the table, especially a stimulus payment from the U.S. government that theyre eligible for but didnt receive. In late January the Internal Revenue Service announced that all third-round stimulus checks had been sent. But the IRS also noted that not all eligible Americans received the full amount theyre entitled to.

The good news? Theres still time to get whats owed to you.

Uncle Sam which issued 175 million third-round payments, totaling over $400 billion, through the end of 2021 reminded people that they can claim any remaining stimulus money theyre entitled to but didnt get by claiming the Recovery Rebate Credit on their 2021 income tax return.

The rebate, which comes as a tax credit of up to $1,400 per eligible person on your 2021 return, will either lower the amount of tax you owe or boost the size of your refund. The golden prize of a tax return is a tax credit, says Mark Steber, chief tax information officer at Jackson Hewitt, a tax preparation service. The Recovery Rebate Credit is a dollar-for-dollar tax-liability offset.

How To Stretch Your Money Until The Spring

While many Americans might have to wait until the spring to get their tax refunds including the stimulus rebate, there could be additional federal help on the horizon.

President-elect Joe Biden made campaign promises to enact sweeping coronavirus relief measures, and Democrats have spoken optimistically about the possibility of $2,000 direct payments now that theyve regained control of the Senate.

But some people need money immediately to help with everyday expenses. While it might seem like overly simplistic advice, its really important to review what resources you have at your immediate disposal to shore up your finances. That might include asking a friend or family member for support, doing research into forbearance programs for any loans, credit cards or mortgages, and/or seeking out ways to make some extra cash quickly.

For consumers with good credit, consider opening a 0% APR credit card so you can pay for essentials while not racking up interest charges. Depending on your expenses, you might be able to pay off the balance with your tax refunds before the intro period ends.

The U.S. Bank Visa® Platinum Card offers an introductory 0% interest for the first 18 billing cycles on both balance transfers and new purchases . Thats a long grace period for making the purchases you need now then paying them back later.

Note that balance transfer credit cards require good to excellent credit to qualify.

When Will I Get My Check And How Can I Track It

The $900 billion stimulus bill required the IRS to send all second stimulus checks by January 15, 2021. Eligible recipients who did not get a payment by the cutoff date now have to claim their money as a Recovery Rebate Credit on their 2020 tax return .

The Treasury Department estimates that eight million eligible recipients may not have gotten their first or second stimulus checks. And President Biden signed an executive order on January 22 tasking the department with the equitable and effective delivery of direct payments to all of those qualifying recipients.

The IRS has made stimulus payments via direct deposit, paper check and economic impact payment card. The first direct deposit payments arrived as early as December 29, 2020. Paper checks started getting mailed on December 30, 2020, and the IRS has sent out approximately eight million prepaid debit cards loaded with the federal stimulus payments. You can follow up on the status of both your first and second checks by using the Get My Payment portal.

People who get Social Security retirement benefits, Social Security survivor benefits, Social Security disability benefits, Supplemental Security Income , Railroad Retirement benefits and VA benefits were able to receive second stimulus checks via direct deposit as long as they had their bank account on file with the IRS.

Eligibility For A Plus

You can estimate how much money the IRS owes your household for the third stimulus check. Just make sure to triple-check that you meet the qualifications, including the income limits.

Because of the overlap with tax season 2020, many people may receive some, but not all, of their allotted amount. If your income changed in 2020, in some cases, the IRS may owe you more money than you received if the income figure used to calculate your payment from your tax returns in 2018 or 2019 is less in 2020. Likewise, if you now have a new dependent, such as a new baby, you may be owed more money.

The IRS is automatically sending plus-up payments to make up the difference. If you dont get one, you may need to claim the missing money another way later in 2021 or even in 2022, since tax season is officially over now.

Second Stimulus Check: How You Can Track When You’ll Get Your Payment

The $600 stimulus checks that are going out to millions of people can now be individually tracked through the IRS’ “Get My Payment” website, which reopened on Monday afternoon. The site informs people about the date of their payment and whether they will receive it via direct deposit or the mailed payment date.

Still, there are some glitches that are delaying the payments of the stimulus money and creating confusion and questions for consumers. Chief among them: Some people who had their 2020 tax returns filed through tax preparers like H& R Block may have had their stimulus check sent directly to the tax firm, rather than their bank account.

This echoes a glitch that impacted payment of the first stimulus check for some people who used tax prep services and for whom the IRS didn’t have direct-deposit information. With the second round of stimulus checks, a similar issue may impact some people, with H& R Block warning its customers who used a service called a refund transfer that they might see “an account number you don’t recognize” on the “Get My Payment” website. Refund transfers are offered to allow people to tap their refund to pay their tax prep fees, according to H& R Block.

As many as 13 million people may experience a delay in receiving their money after the IRS sent the funds to closed or invalid bank accounts, according to tax-prep company Jackson Hewitt.

How To Get Your Stimulus Checks If You Still Havent Received Payment

While Congress considers whether to issue a fourth round of stimulus checks, some people havent received their older checks.

The first and second stimulus check amounts were for $1,200 and $600, respectively. The third was for $1,400. Heres how to get your stimulus checks if you havent received them yet.

Firstly, some people havent received checks because not everyone qualifies for them. You arent eligible if your previous IRS tax filings show that youre a single person who makes over $75,000 annually, a head of household who makes over $112,500 annually, or a married couple who jointly reports over $150,000 annually.

Some are also ineligible due to restrictions on age and dependent status. If someone claimed you as a dependent in their previous tax returns and you were 17 years old or older on January 1, 2020, then you werent eligible for the first two checks, according to CNBC.

The IRS and the Social Security Administration have also said that people may not have received stimulus checks because they didnt file their 2020 taxes. They urged them to file for 2019 and 2020 even if theyre not legally required, in order to ensure that all eligible people receive their payments.

We can verify your stimulus money might still be on the way. The IRSs website says if the Get My Payment tool shows your payment was mailed, it may take up to three to four weeks for you to receive it. The agency isnt saying WHY it could take that long, but it advises to watch your mail carefully for a check or a debit card.

According to IRS.gov, if you checked GMP on or after Jan. 5 and:

  • GMP reflects a direct deposit date and partial account information, then your payment is deposited there.
  • GMP reflects a date your payment was mailed it may take up to three to four weeks for you to receive the payment. Watch your mail carefully for a check or an EIP debit card.

What If I Receive Social Security Through The Direct Express Debit Card

The IRS says that people who receive government benefits such as Social Security, Railroad Retirement benefits, Supplemental Security Income or Veteran’s Benefits through Direct Express a debit card that automatically receives payments will get their second stimulus checks deposited onto that card.

But the IRS cautioned, “The bank information shown in Get My Payment will be a number associated with your Direct Express card and may be a number you don’t recognize.”

What If The Irs Sent The Check To A Closed Account

Because people can’t update their bank account information on the “Get My Payment” site, there’s concern that some checks might be sent to accounts that were recently closed. If that’s the case, the IRS says you’ll have to wait until you file your 2020 tax returns.

The stimulus checks are actually a tax rebate that can be applied to your annual tax returns but that means people may be waiting weeks or even months for their stimulus money to show up through their tax refund.

One thing to keep in mind: Those who did not receive a first or second stimulus check but are eligible to claim one will be able to get that money when they file their 2020 taxes. The IRS urges taxpayers who didnt receive a payment this year to review the eligibility criteria when they file their 2020 taxes many people, including recent college graduates, may be eligible to claim it. Will You Get A Second Stimulus Check If You Got The First One

Havent Received 2nd Stimulus Check? Here Are 4 Reasons Why

Because the second stimulus check passed by Congress is half the size of the first check, not everyone who got a payment in the spring will get money this time around.

If your 2019 reported income was $75,000 or less, under the current plan you would be eligible to receive the full $600 one-time payment. Couples who reported an adjusted gross income up to $150,000 would receive $1,200.

If you reported making more than $75,000, you would receive partial payments dropping by $5 for every $100 above the income limits.

So an individual who earned $86,900, for example, would get $5 under Congress approved plan. During the first round of direct money, the money phased out at $99,000 for a single filer.

If youre a couple making $174,000 or more, or a head of household making more than $124,500, you also wont get a second stimulus check.

Youre Not Sure About Eligibility

Payments being sent out this month are largely based on the most recent tax returns the IRS has available, for 2019. The amount you receive as an initial payment will be based on that data, though you may be eligible for more.

Eligible individuals with an adjusted gross income under $75,000, heads of household under $112,500, and married couples filing jointly under $150,000 are eligible for the full $600 payment. After that, payments phase out with reduced payments up to $87,000 in income for individuals, $124,500 for heads of household, and $174,000 for married couples filing jointly. Children under 17 claimed on 2019 federal tax returns each qualify for an additional $600, while children 17 and older and adult dependents are not eligible.

Even if you dont typically file tax returns, you can still receive your stimulus payment. It wont be issued automatically, but you can get it in the form of the Recovery Rebate Credit when you file your 2020 taxes.

In fact, anyone who believes they didnt receive the full payment for which they are eligible can reconcile the lost amount as a Recovery Rebate Credit on 2020 federal tax returns using Form 1040, the basic form most people will use when they file taxes.

Who Would Be Eligible For The Third Stimulus Check

Families earning less than $150,000 a year and individuals earning less than $75,000 a year should get the full $1,400 per person. Families earning up to $160,000 per year and individuals earning up to $80,000 per year will receive prorated stimulus checks for less than $1,400 max.

Unlike the previous two rounds, you will receive stimulus payments for all your dependents, including adult dependents and college students.
