You may be surprised how much stimulus money Americans will end up with this year.

The federal government has been very generous with providing coronavirus stimulus money in 2021.

Despite the fact that the Biden administration doesn’t seem responsive to calls for a fourth stimulus check, the reality is that the majority of Americans will receive thousands of dollars in federal aid deposited into their bank accounts this year.

In fact, an analysis from the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy recently revealed that the value of federal stimulus dollars averages $3,450 for the bottom 60% of earners in the U.S. That encompasses everyone making less than $65,000 per year. And this $3,450 number doesn’t even take into account the fact that the child and dependent care credit was also expanded this year.

The Second Round Of Stimulus Checks

The second round of stimulus payments were authorized on December 27, 2020 as part of the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2021. Those payments typically totaled $600 per person, or $1,200 for married individuals, plus $600 for each qualifying child. The payments began phasing out at the same income levels as the current payments, but the maximum income levels to receive a payment were slightly higher. Taxpayers were ineligible for any payment, unless they had a qualifying child, above the following income levels:

  • $87,000 for single taxpayers
  • $124,500 for taxpayers filing as head of household
  • $174,000 for married couples filing jointly

As of March 5, 2021, about $135 billion of the second round of payments have been sent out overall, such payments are expected to cost a total of $164 billion according to the Congressional Budget Office.

How To Claim Your Missing Third Stimulus Payment On Your 2021 Tax Return

How Do I Get My Stimulus Check Faster

Youâll need to request any missing third stimulus payments on your 2021 tax return by claiming the Recovery Rebate Tax Credit.

This is the case if you received a partial amount or didnât previously qualify for the third stimulus payment.

Letâs say youâre single and your income for the 2020 and 2019 tax years exceeds the threshold . However, you lost your job in 2021, so your income drastically decreased. You can now claim the Recovery Rebate Tax Credit since your earnings fell below the threshold.

Families that added dependents may also be able to claim the credit.

In addition, a few lingering taxpayers who file taxes using ITINs may not have received payments for their eligible dependents who have Social Security numbers.

You need to complete the Recovery Rebate Tax Credit worksheet and submit it along with your 2021 tax return. If you use a tax software program, it should guide you through the process. Keep in mind, the IRS predicted a frustrating and slow tax season this year, so file your return as soon as possible.

Before completing the worksheet, you must know the amount of any third stimulus payments received for you, your spouse, and any dependents. The worksheet will also request your adjusted gross income for the year to determine your eligibility.

The IRS started mailing Letter 6475 to taxpayers in Januaryâthe letter confirms the total amount of the third stimulus payments received for the 2021 tax year.

Stimulus Payments Child Tax Credit Expansion Were Critical Parts Of Successful Covid

When COVID-19 began to spread rapidly across the United States in March 2020, the economy quickly shed more than 20 million jobs. Amid intense fear and hardship, federal policymakers responded, enacting five bills in 2020 that provided an estimated $3.3 trillion of relief and the American Rescue Plan in 2021, which added another $1.8 trillion. This robust response helped make the COVID-19 recession the shortest on record and helped fuel an economic recovery that brought the unemployment rate, which peaked at 14.8 percent in April 2020, down to below 4 percent. One measure of annual poverty declined by the most on record in 2020, in data back to 1967, and available data suggest that poverty levels in 2021 were similar to 2020. Two critical components of the fiscal response were Economic Impact Payments and the expanded Child Tax Credit, which quickly delivered much-needed income to families struggling to pay their bills.

With both the EIP and the Child Tax Credit, policymakers built on prior policies but with innovative design improvements to expand eligibility and make access easier:

Nutrition Assistance: $52 Billion

Tax tips: Claiming stimulus check on IRS 2021 return | ABC7 Chicago

The pandemic has caused a spike in hunger, prompting the federal government to pour money into nutrition assistance.

More than $44 billion has been committed to boosted food stamp benefits. The congressional rescue plans have increased families payments to the maximum allotment for their household size and boosted the monthly benefit by 15%. The Biden administration also issued a guidance in April that will provide a bump up for the estimated 25 million low-income Americans who did not get an increase last year because they were already at the top benefit for their family size.

The 15% increase is set to expire at the end of September.

Congress also created a Pandemic-EBT program in March 2020 to provide families with funds to replace the free or reduced-price meals their children would have received in school. That program has been extended through the duration of the pandemic, though not all states have been approved or have started distributing money for the 2020-2021 school year. Just over $7 billion has been spent on child nutrition assistance programs.

Also, some $605 million has been committed to purchasing and distributing food to food banks through The Emergency Food Assistance Program, known as TEFAP. Congress allocated a total of $850 million in funding in relief packages in March 2020.

Not all of the funding for nutrition aid has been distributed yet.
