Third Stimulus Checks: When and How Will You Get $1,400?

The IRS has begun distributing stimulus payments. The first batch of stimulus payments could arrive as early as this weekend , with more arriving over the coming week. Further batches of payments will arrive during the following weeks.

For information on when you can expect your stimulus payment, check the IRS Get My Payment tool, which will be live starting March 15th.

Incarcerated Individuals And Mixed Status Families Eligibility For Third Stimulus Checks

For the third stimulus check, anyone with a Social Security number can receive the stimulus check for themselves and their family members. This is different from the last bill and ensures that mixed families will receive the third stimulus checks too.

Its important to note that if you are incarcerated, you can still receive your check. And if you lost work or wages in 2020, you could get a higher amount than you did with the first or second stimulus checks.

And if you normally arent required to file taxes, either because of your income level or for other reasons, you are probably eligible for a stimulus payment.

Reminder: File your taxes by April 15!

Tip: If you havent yet filed your taxes, read about how to file your taxes for free and whether you should take a Refund Anticipation Loan.

The intention behind this stimulus check, as with the last two, is to support Americans during this difficult time. This may also be a good time to consider establishing savings habits to create a financial buffer for you and your family.

Can I Claim A Stimulus Check For Someone Who Is Deceased

Yes. For the third stimulus check, people who have died on or after January 1, 2021, are eligible to receive the third stimulus check. However, for married military couples, the date of eligibility is expanded. If the person who died was a member of the military and died before January 1, 2021, the surviving spouse can still receive the third stimulus check, even if they dont have an SSN.

For the first and second stimulus check, the IRS has stated that people who died on or after January 1, 2020, are eligible to receive both payments.

If they didnt receive the stimulus payments or didnt receive the full amounts that they are eligible for, spouses or other family members can file a 2020 federal tax return and claim it as part of their tax refund or use GetCTC.org if they dont have a filing requirement. The deadline to use GetCTC.org is November 15, 2021.

Rd Stimulus Check: How Much Will I Get When

The U.S. Senate passed President Joe Bidens $1.9 trillion Covid-19 relief bill on Saturday, making a third round of stimulus checks likely to arrive as soon as this month. But how much will you get? When?

The Senate approved several changes to the American Rescue Plan, also known as the ARP, including eliminating a proposed $15-per-hour minimum wage hike and reducing extended unemployment benefits to $300 a week, down from $400 proposed by the House. The new bill also limits some eligibility for direct payments worth up to $1,400 after Republicans and moderate Senate Democrats saw more targeted spending.

The bill passed, 50-49, and goes to the House this week for final congressional approval. Its expected to be approved by the Democrat-controlled House and signed by Biden by March 14, before the current round of unemployment assistance and other coronavirus aid expires.

This nation has suffered too much for much too long, Biden told reporters at the White House Saturday. And everything in this package is designed to relieve the suffering and to meet the most urgent needs of the nation, and put us in a better position to prevail.

How much will I get?

Combined with the $600 stimulus checks approved by President Donald Trump in December, the package would mean $2,000 in direct payments to most Americans.

That means that a family of four could receive $5,600 a huge increase from earlier stimulus checks.

  • The IRS will use income information from your 2020 tax return if they received that return before sending your money. Otherwise they will use information from your 2019 tax return.
  • If the IRS sends your payment based on a 2019 return and then your 2020 return says you qualify for more , they will send an additional payment to make up for the difference. To get the additional payment, you must file the 2020 tax return by 90 days from the filing deadline or September 1, 2021, whichever is earlier.

The IRS will attempt to deliver your payment to the account information provided on your tax return. Some RALs and RACs are issued through debit cards. If the card is still active, you will receive your payment on the card. If the account or card is no longer active, the deposit will be rejected, and the IRS will send a paper check to the address on the tax return.

You can request a payment trace to track where and how your payment was delivered. You should only request a payment trace if you received IRS Notice 1444 showing that your first stimulus check was issued or if your IRS account shows your payment amount and you havent received your first stimulus check. See Question 24 to learn more about how to request a payment trace.

How Much Will My Stimulus Check Be

Payments for dependents up to $1,400 per person are included in this bill, unlike the previous two rounds of stimulus. Anyone with an AGI at or above $80,000 as a single filer, $120,000 as a head-of-household filer, or $160,000 as a married joint filer will not receive a payment for themselves or their dependent.

But taxpayers who fall below the income limits can claim up to $1,400 for an unlimited number of qualifying dependents.

For example, a married couple with an adjusted gross income of up to $150,000 and two kids will get a $5,600 stimulus check. A married couple with an AGI of $150,000 and four kids will get $8,400. However, the total check would be reduced for every dollar of income above $150,000, up to $160,000, when it phases out completely.

In the table below, you can see how much a stimulus check will be in various scenarios.

The highlighted numbers indicate where payments stop for that filing status.

Shelters and other service providers, such as health care clinics and drop-in day centers, may allow you to use their address for tax purposes. Other agencies that offer homeless prevention services like a Community Action Agency or Salvation Army are also options. If you are not staying in a shelter or cannot find a service provider nearby, you can also use a trusted relatives or friends address. The IRS will deliver checks to P.O. boxes.

Who Is Eligible For The Third Economic Impact Payment And What Incomes Qualify

Generally, if you are a U.S. citizen or U.S. resident alien, you are eligible for the full amount of the third Economic Impact Payment if you are not a dependent of another taxpayer and have a valid Social Security number and your adjusted gross income on their tax return does not exceed:

  • $150,000 if married and filing a joint return or if filing as a qualifying widow or widower
  • $112,500 if filing as head of household or
  • $75,000 for eligible individuals using any other filing statuses, such as single filers and married people filing separate returns.

Payments will be phased out or reduced — above those AGI amounts. This means taxpayers will not receive a third payment if their AGI exceeds:

  • $160,000 if married and filing a joint return or if filing as a qualifying widow or widower
  • $120,000 if filing as head of household or
  • $80,000 for eligible individuals using other filing statuses, such as single filers and married people filing separate returns.

For example, a single person with no dependents and an AGI of $77,500 will normally get a $700 payment . A married couple with two dependents and an AGI of $155,000 will generally get a payment of $2,800 . Filers with incomes of at least $80,000 , $120,000 and $160,000 will get no payment based on the law.

How Much Does The Third Stimulus Check Pay

The $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief plan includes a third round of $1,400 stimulus payments, topping off the $600 checks that were already approved by Congress in December 2020, and adding up to $2,000.

Congress passed the coronavirus relief plan with targeted income limits for maximum stimulus payments to individual taxpayers earning under $75,000 and joint filers making up to $150,000. But whereas the first and second rounds of stimulus payments phased out checks on a sliding scale of $5 for every $100 over the income limit, the new plan cuts off high earners at $80,000 for individuals and $160,000 for couples.

Eligibility for the third stimulus checks is based on your tax filing status. For more information on who qualifies for a third stimulus check, our tables below will help you calculate different payment options.

With the first checks, the IRS automatically sent stimulus checks to many who normally arent required to file a tax return including older adults, Social Security and SSDI and SSI recipients and railroad retirees. Some who didnt file taxes may be eligible for a payment but havent yet claimed it.

If this is the case for you, enter your best guess where it asks for your adjusted gross income.

Will My Third Stimulus Check Be Reduced

The number the IRS will look at is your adjusted gross income for 2020, which is your income without retirement contributions but before your standard or itemized deductions are taken out. You can find your adjusted gross income on line 11 of your Form 1040 of your 2020 tax return. If you haven’t yet filed your 2020 tax return, the IRS will use your AGI from your 2019 tax return.

Single people who make between $75,000 and $80,000 will have their checks reduced by 28% of the amount over $75,000, and married people who file joint returns and make between 150,000 and $160,000 will have their checks reduced by the same percentage of the amount over $150,000. Taxpayers who file as head of household and make between $112,500 and $120,000 will have their checks reduced by a similar percentage of the amount over $112,500. The $1,400 that parents receive for each dependent is subject to the same reduction.

This means that single people who earned $80,000 or more in 2020 don’t qualify at all for the third stimulus checkcompared with $87,000 for the second stimulus check. Couples who earned $160,000 or more won’t get a third stimulus check, down from $174,000 for the second stimulus check. And a family of four that earned $160,000 or more also won’t receive a third stimulus check.

Youre A Member Of A Mixed

Under the CARES Act, U.S. adults with a Social Security number werent eligible for a stimulus check if they were in a mixed-status household, meaning one partner was undocumented or didnt have an SSN. A recent law change, however, scraps that rule. Now, individuals would be able to receive both payments retroactively meaning both the first and second stimulus payment for the taxpayers and qualifying children of the family who have work-eligible SSNs.

Youll want to reconcile that first amount with your Recovery Rebate Credit, if you didnt receive it.

Determining Eligibility For The Third Economic Impact Payment

Most eligible people will get the third Economic Impact Payment automatically and won’t need to take additional action. The IRS will use available information to determine eligibility and issue the third payment to eligible people who:

  • Filed a 2020 tax return.
  • Filed a 2019 tax return if the 2020 return has not been submitted or processed yet.
  • Did not file a 2020 or 2019 tax return but registered for the first Economic Impact Payment using the special Non-Filers portal last year.
  • Are federal benefit recipients as of December 31, 2020, who do not usually file a tax return and received Social Security and Railroad Retirement Board benefits, Supplemental Security Income and Veteran benefit recipients in 2020. The IRS is working with these agencies to get updated information for 2021 to assist with stimulus payments at a date to be determined. IRS.gov will have more details.

Changes To Tax Credits

the Earned Income Tax Credit and the Child Tax Credit .

The EITC is a tax credit that provides financial assistance to workers earning around $57,000 or less. The credit is partially refundable , which means it can reduce your taxes or increase your refund.

You may qualify for the EITC with or without children but currently, the credit is fairly small for people without kids. For 2021, you can qualify for a maximum credit of $6,728 if you have up to three children. However, for childless taxpayers, the total amount you can claim is $543.

Biden proposes to temporarily increase the EITC for childless workers for one year, allowing those who qualify to claim a credit of up to $1,500. The EITC will remain unchanged for those with kids.

The bill also contains big changes to the child tax credit although theyre temporary and will only last for one year. Under the current law, a person might qualify to claim a credit of up to $2,000 per child under 17. Bidens plan greatly boosts the credit, increasing the CTC up to $3,600 for children ages under the age of 6. Children ages six to 17 might qualify for a credit of up to $3,000. Another provision in the package would allow the credit to be fully refundable to those who qualify.

  • Under $80,000 as a single filer
  • Under $120,000 as a head-of-household filer
