The American Rescue Plan, a new COVID relief bill, was signed into law on March 11, 2021. The bill includes a third round of stimulus payments for millions of Americans. We know these funds are important to you, and we are here to help.

If you are eligible, you could get up to $1,400 in stimulus checks for each taxpayer in your family plus an additional $1,400 per dependent. This means a family with two children could receive $5,600.

The IRS began issuing the first batch of stimulus payments, and they could arrive as early as this weekend , with more arriving over the coming week. Further batches of payments will arrive during the following weeks. If youre eligible, check the status of your stimulus payment and the way itll be sent to you by going to the IRS Get My Payment Tool, which will be live on March 15th.

How Can You Request An Irs Trace For Missing Stimulus Money

To request a payment trace, call the IRS at 800-919-9835 or mail or fax a completed Form 3911, Taxpayer Statement Regarding Refund . Note: If you call the number, youll have to listen through the recorded content before you can connect with an agent.

To complete Form 3911 for your third stimulus check, the IRS provides the following instructions:

1. Write EIP3 on the top of the form

2. Complete the form answering all refund questions as they relate to your payment.

3. When completing item 7 under Section 1:

  • Check the box for Individual as the Type ofreturn.
  • Enter 2021 as the TaxPeriod.
  • Do not write anything for the DateFiled.
  • Sign the form. If youre married and filing together, both spouses must sign the form.

You should not mail Form 3911 if youve already requested a trace by phone. And the IRS said you shouldnot request a payment trace to determine if you were eligible to get a check or confirm the amount you should have received.

Some individuals had too much income in 2019 to qualify for the first or second stimulus payment , but their income decreased enough in 2020 for them to qualify. If you fall into this category, you can file a tax return for your 2020 taxes and youll receive a recovery rebate credit as part of your refund .

In other cases, families received stimulus payments by direct deposit but the IRS neglected to add money for one or more of their children. Sometimes there didnt seem to be a reason for this . For other families, it seems the IRS did not update the number of children that taxpayers have, even for families who claimed new children on their 2019 tax returns. Youll be able to claim the rest of the stimulus payment when you file your next tax return.

This Is Your Best Resource For Checking For More Stimulus Checks

To find out if you are in line for more stimulus money, your best option is to check with your state’s Department of Revenue or whatever your state’s tax agency is. You can find the link for your individual state’s taxing authority from this list on the IRS.gov website.

The reason this is the best resource for finding out if you are eligible for more stimulus money is because future checks are coming not from the federal government but from individual states.

A number of different states throughout the U.S. have already issued payments or are planning to do so soon. And your state’s taxing authority website is the best place to find out about what money is coming since most individual state payments come in the form of tax credits or rebates.

States are sending out payments because many have COVID-19 funds from the federal government that have not yet been spent. They are using the funds to provide help to struggling residents.

Some states are making these funds available to almost all residents within their borders while others have more narrow eligibility requirements. You can learn the rules by checking information with your local taxing agency.

To date, the IRS has made 169 million payments for the third round of stimulus checks for $1,400. The agency continues to send weekly batches of payments, so there is still time if you are waiting for your money. However, there could actually be an issue with your payment and the IRS doesn’t want you to call them with problems related to a missing check.

Reasons for a delay could include a lag in mail delivery , if the IRS has incorrect direct deposit information for you or if the agency suspects identity theft. There might be other problems if you’re a recipient of SSI, SSDI or veterans benefits. Or maybe you received a letter from the IRS saying that your $1,400 payment was sent, but the check never arrived. Then what?

    What About People With Itins

    SSDI & Stimulus Checks

You still need a work-authorizing Social Security Number to be eligible for this stimulus. However, there are important changes since the first round of stimulus checks.

    • In the first stimulus rollout, any non-SSN holder on a joint return made everyone on that return ineligible. Big change: The new rounds of stimulus has corrected this problem. If you filed a joint return with a non-SSN holder, you are still eligible for the stimulus. See the below hypotheticals.
    • Situation: A single tax filer has an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number but no Social Security number .
    • This person is ineligible for the stimulus.
  • Situation: A spouse has a Social Security number and files married filing jointly on a tax return with a spouse who has an ITIN.
  • The SSN holder is now eligible to get a payment. If they have children on the tax return that have SSNs, these children will be eligible for the payment for each qualifying child.
  • Situation: Two ITIN holders file a joint return and claim young children who have SSNs.
  • The children who have SSNs are eligible for the payment.

If you are a resident of California for at least six months in 2020 and you have filed your 2020 state tax return by October 15, 2021 you may be eligible. Next, you cant be a dependent on another return and you must still be a resident of California at the time the stimulus check is paid.

If all those are true, your amount is based on your income:

    How To Claim Your Money

The easiest way for a taxpayer to get a stimulus payment, or additional payment, if they are, in fact, due more, is to apply on their 2020 tax return, explained Mark Steber, chief tax officer for Jackson Hewitt Tax Services.

There will be a schedule and line on the tax return to reconcile what they have received so far, and the amount actually due to them based on their 2020 tax return, continued Steber.

The IRS says that eligible individuals can claim the Recovery Rebate Credit on their 2020 Form 1040 or 1040-SR. These forms can also be used by people who are not normally required to file tax returns but are eligible for the credit.

If you are, indeed, due more money, it will show up on the 2020 tax return as an additional refund. Conversely, however, if you received too much cash via a stimulus payment, you do not have to pay it back.

And for those concerned about how this might complicate the filing process this year, Greene-Lewis tells filers not to worry.

TurboTax has guidance related to stimulus payments and other impacts of Covid-19, explained Greene-Lewis. It will ask up front if the filer received a stimulus payment and then calculate the recovery rebate credit based on actual 2020 income.

    Your adjusted gross income

Its important to understand the income thresholds to receive a stimulus check. First, there is no minimum adjusted gross income threshold. However, there is a maximum income threshold. The stimulus check amount phases out by $5 for every $100 above certain income levels based on your tax filing status:

    • Single Filer: $75,000

If your adjusted gross income is less than these amounts, you can receive the full stimulus check amount of $1,200 for single taxpayers, $2,400 for married couples filing jointly and $500 for each dependent child age 16 or younger. If you are a single tax filer who has adjusted gross income greater than $99,000 or a married couple filing jointly with no children that earns more than $198,000, then you wont qualify for a stimulus check.

You didnt provide banking information to the IRS

So, you didnt provide any banking information to the IRS? No worries. First, you can receive a paper check. The IRS will start sending paper stimulus checks to taxpayers on April 24. Taxpayers with the lowest annual adjusted gross income will receive their stimulus check first, beginning with those who earn less than $10,000. Each week, approximately 5 million paper stimulus checks will be sent at increasing income increments. For example, stimulus checks will be sent to those who earn $10,001 $20,000 on May 1. This process will continue each week from May to September until all stimulus checks have been distributed.
