Stimulus Checks: How to check on the status of where your stimulus relief money is

The IRS has developed an online tool that allows people to check the status of their COVID-19 stimulus payment and see when it will arrive. The IRS will be updating this platform once a day.

> > Economic Stimulus Payments: Get My Payment

NOTE: The Get My Payment tool may be temporarily offline as the IRS makes updates to its portal based on new legislation related to Coronavirus stimulus checks.

Please continue to monitor this page as the Get My Payment tool is updated and becomes available again.

Most people will receive their stimulus check by Direct Deposit in other words, the IRS will deposit the money directly into your bank account. If you do not have your bank information on file with the IRS, then you will get a paper check or prepaid debit card in the mail. If you want to provide your bank information to the IRS for Direct Deposit and your stimulus check hasnt been mailed yet, you can do that in the Get My Payment portal as well. Additionally, the Get My Payment portal can be used to update your mailing address if needed.

Im Eligible For A Stimulus Check How Do I Receive My Payment

Stimulus payments up to $1,200 for individuals, $2,400 for joint taxpayers and an additional $500 for each qualifying child under 17 will be based on information from your most recent tax filings, either 2019 or 2018, if you have not yet filed this season. You can calculate how much your check is projected to be using our stimulus check calculator here. For additional information on the stimulus package and what it means for you, click here.

If you are not required by the IRS to file a tax return and do not receive social security benefits, use the free TurboTax Stimulus Registration product to easily provide the IRS with the information they need to calculate and send your stimulus payment.

If you are a Social Security retirement or disability income recipient, you do not need to take any action to get your stimulus payment as it will be automatically calculated based on information from your 2019 Form SSA-1099 Social Security Benefit Statement or RRB-1099 Social Security Equivalent Benefit Statement and deposited by the IRS.

Veterans and their beneficiaries who receive Compensation and Pension benefit payments from VA who dont usually file a tax return and didnt file their tax year 2018 or tax year 2019 taxes also dont need to do anything and will automatically receive their $1,200 stimulus check.

What The Online Get My Payment Tool Can’t Tell You

The IRS tool won’t give you hourly updates — the status information is updated once daily — nor will it tell you how much stimulus money you’re getting or provide details on the first two stimulus checks approved in 2020. You won’t find steps for what to do if you run into payment problems.

The IRS doesn’t want you to call if you have payment trouble. The agency says its representatives don’t have information beyond what’s shown in the tool. Here’s what we recommend doing to address a stimulus issue.

Another way to find out more info on your third payment is to create an IRS account online. If you are sent a plus-up payment after your 2020 tax return is processed, you should see the amount of your plus-up payment with your online account.

If your third stimulus check hasn’t arrived yet, you’re likely becoming concerned about what’s happened to it. But don’t get too worried yet — start by checking your bank account because it may have a pending deposit.Iit’s also possible the check is stuck en route in the mail. Once you figure out your payment status, you may find that you’re owed a “plus-up” supplemental payment if the IRS didn’t send you enough stimulus money.

However, there could be information you need to act on if that’s the case, the IRS online tracking tool will let you know. It’ll also show if you need to file a payment trace for that missing third check. The tool isn’t perfect, but it’s a great way to learn your payment status. It won’t tell you how much money to expect — not everyone gets $1,400 — but you can use our stimulus calculator to estimate that amount.

What If You Have Changed Your Address Or Bank Account

The IRS will use the data already in its systems to send the new payments:

  • If your direct deposit information is on file, you will receive the payment that way.
  • If your direct deposit information is not on file, you will receive the payment as a check or debit card in the mail.

Some payments may have been sent to an account that may be closed or no longer active. By law, the financial institution must return the payment to the IRS, they cannot hold and issue the payment to an individual when the account is no longer active.

The IRS cannot change payment information, including bank account or mailing information. If an eligible taxpayer does not get a payment or it is less than expected, it may be claimed on the 2020 tax return as the Recovery Rebate Credit. Remember, Economic Impact Payments are an advance payment of what will be called the Recovery Rebate Credit on the 2020 Form 1040 or Form 1040-SR.

The FAQ says you can also update your mailing address to receive your payment.

On social media, some people said they had received their checks via direct deposit on Friday, while others said they were still waiting.

When Will I Get The Recovery Rebate Credit

Status of stimulus check: How to check on your payment

You will most likely get the Recovery Rebate Credit as part of your tax refunds. If you electronically file your tax return, you will likely receive your refund within 3 weeks. If you mail your return, it can take at least 8 weeks to receive your refund.

Claiming the Recovery Rebate Credit will not delay your tax refund. However, if you dont claim the correct amount of the Recovery Rebate Credit, your refund may be delayed while the IRS corrects the error on your return. The IRS will send you a notice of any changes made to your return.

You can check on the status of your refund using the IRS Check My Refund Status tool.

The feds have created a way to see when your third coronavirus stimulus check will arrive but its far from foolproof.

The Internal Revenue Service reopened its Get My Payment tool so taxpayers can track the status of the $1,400 payments that started hitting bank accounts over the weekend.

The tool should be familiar to anyone who received either of the first two economic impact payments Congress authorized last year. Its a simple online form that should tell you whether your payment has been processed and when to expect it after you enter your Social Security number, birth date, street address and ZIP code.

But the tools latest iteration faced complaints from people who didnt see details about when the much-needed money would arrive.

Get My Payment became a trending topic on Twitter Monday morning as taxpayers griped about the tool spitting out four dreaded words: Payment Status Not Available.

The IRS says there are three reasons you might see that vague message. Its possible that your payment just hasnt been processed yet, or the IRS doesnt have enough information to send it to you.

It may also mean that youre not eligible for the check. Congress tightened the eligibility rules so that anyone making more than $80,000 a year wont receive any money. Full payments are still available to individuals who had an income of up to $75,000 on their 2019 or 2020 tax return.
