How to Get Your $1,400 Stimulus Check

WHILE some Americans are still owed a stimulus payment, there are a couple of ways for them to claim.

The Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration has shared a report, revealing several factors as to why payments may be delayed.

Most folks received their stimulus checks by check or direct deposit while others received them in the form of prepaid debit cards.

Some actually mistook these cards as junk mail and threw them out.

The report by TIGTA also said that manually verifying the stimulus claims and debit card policies has delayed the payments for as many as 10million people.

Who Is Getting The 1400 Stimulus Checks

The $1,400 stimulus payments are a part of March’s $1.9 trillion package. Single filers earning up to $75,000 are eligible for $1,400, while couples filing jointly earning up to $150,000 can get $2,800. No payments are being sent to single filers earnings above $80,000, or couples earning jointly above $160,000.

What To Do If You Didnt Receive Your Third Stimulus Payment

If you didnt apply for your third stimulus payment or you didnt know you were entitled, or even if youve received a partial amount but you need to claim the remaining figure, theres still a way that you can claim using your next tax return.

From January 2022 you will be able to claim your stimulus payment as a Recovery Rebate Tax Credit on your 2021 tax return. You will need to complete the Recovery Rebate Tax Credit worksheet found on the IRS website and submit this alongside your tax return.

On this worksheet you will need to declare the amount of money youve received so far in stimulus payments and declare any payments made to other people within your household.

If you didnt qualify for the previous stimulus payments and your financial situation has now changed to make you eligible, you will also need to declare your Adjusted Gross Income so that the IRS can determine your eligibility for this most recent payment.

Once youve determined the exact amount of recovery rebate that youre entitled to, youll need to add this to line 30 of your tax return.

If you didnt get the third stimulus check, heres what you should do

The last 2021 stimulus payment has been issued, the Internal Revenue Service said Wednesday, but if you did not get yours, you are not out of luck yet.

According to the IRS, if you did not get a stimulus check but are eligible for one, you must use the recovery rebate credit on your 2021 income tax return to claim the $1,400-per-person economic impact payment.

The agency also reminds parents that if you had a child born in 2021 and that child did not receive a payment, you can also claim the payment via the recovery rebate.

If you are unsure about your payments, look for a Letter 6475 from the IRS that shows that you either had a payment sent to you, or that you are entitled to and can claim the recovery rebate credit on your 2021 tax return.

According to the agency, Families and individuals in the following circumstances, among others, may not have received the full amount of their third-round Economic Impact Payment because their circumstances in 2021 were different than they were in 2020.

These families and individuals may be eligible to receive more money by claiming the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit on their 2021 income tax return.

Individuals must claim the 2021 recovery rebate credit on their 2021 income tax return to get this payment, the IRS pointed out, because the agency will not automatically calculate the 2021 recovery rebate credit.

Timing Of Third Stimulus Checks

How Much Was My Third Stimulus Check

Question: When will I get my third stimulus check?

Answer: Millions of Americans have already received their third stimulus check. And the IRS will be sending out more over the next several weeks. So, if you havent received your payment yet , it should arrive relatively soon.

How long it will take to send all payments is not known yet. The IRS has a lot on its plate right now. Were in the middle of tax return filing season, so the IRS is already busy processing tax returns. The tax agency also has to send refunds for people who reported unemployment compensation on their 2020 return and come up with a way to send periodic child tax credit payments later this year. All of this could very well slow down the processing and delivery of third-round stimulus checks.

If the IRS already has your bank account information either from a recent tax payment that you made, a tax refund it sent you, or some other source then expect to get your third stimulus check faster. Thats because the IRS will be able to directly deposit the payment into your bank account. The IRS can also make a third stimulus payment to a Direct Express debit card account, a U.S. Debit Card account, or other Treasury-sponsored account. Otherwise, youll get a paper check in the mail.

If you already have a prepaid debit card from the IRS , youll get a new card if the IRS decides to send your third stimulus payment to you in that form.

To date, the IRS has made 169 million payments for the third round of stimulus checks for $1,400. The agency continues to send weekly batches of payments, so there is still time if you are waiting for your money. However, there could actually be an issue with your payment and the IRS doesn’t want you to call them with problems related to a missing check.

Reasons for a delay could include a lag in mail delivery , if the IRS has incorrect direct deposit information for you or if the agency suspects identity theft. There might be other problems if you’re a recipient of SSI, SSDI or veterans benefits. Or maybe you received a letter from the IRS saying that your $1,400 payment was sent, but the check never arrived. Then what?

How To Claim Your Missing Third Stimulus Payment On Your 2021 Tax Return

Youâll need to request any missing third stimulus payments on your 2021 tax return by claiming the Recovery Rebate Tax Credit.

This is the case if you received a partial amount or didnât previously qualify for the third stimulus payment.

Letâs say youâre single and your income for the 2020 and 2019 tax years exceeds the threshold . However, you lost your job in 2021, so your income drastically decreased. You can now claim the Recovery Rebate Tax Credit since your earnings fell below the threshold.

Families that added dependents may also be able to claim the credit.

In addition, a few lingering taxpayers who file taxes using ITINs may not have received payments for their eligible dependents who have Social Security numbers.

You need to complete the Recovery Rebate Tax Credit worksheet and submit it along with your 2021 tax return. If you use a tax software program, it should guide you through the process. Keep in mind, the IRS predicted a frustrating and slow tax season this year, so file your return as soon as possible.

Before completing the worksheet, you must know the amount of any third stimulus payments received for you, your spouse, and any dependents. The worksheet will also request your adjusted gross income for the year to determine your eligibility.

The IRS started mailing Letter 6475 to taxpayers in Januaryâthe letter confirms the total amount of the third stimulus payments received for the 2021 tax year.

Do You Need To File This Year

First things first, lets figure out if you even need to file. This will depend on your income, age and filing status. For instance, if youre not married, younger than 65 and your gross income was less than $12,400, you dont need to file this year. On the other hand, if that income was from self-employment, this would be considered a special situation, and youd be required to file your tax return.

Not sure if you need to file? The IRS has a convenient tool to help you determine that. Just answer a few simple questions.
