Increase In The Amount Of The Maximum Child Tax Credit For 2021
One significant change to the Child Tax Credit, effective in 2021, is an increase in the maximum amount of credit available per child. In general, the new IRC Section 24 increases the maximum amount of the credit to $3,000 per qualifying child for 2021. And even better, the enhanced maximum credit is further increased to $3,600 per qualifying child under the age of six .

While the increase in the maximum credit from $2,000 to $3,000/$3,600 per qualifying child is substantial in and of itself, it is even more significant considering the maximum credit per child was doubled only recently, beginning in 2018, from $1,000 to $2,000 per qualifying child, via the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act.
Example 5: Tony and Pepper are married taxpayers with two children, ages eight and four. Therefore, they are eligible for a maximum Child Tax Credit of $3,000 + $3,600 = $6,600 in 2021.
Tony and Pepper have $140,000 of AGI in 2021, which is less than the credit threshold established for joint filers.
Accordingly, they will receive the full $6,600 amount as a Child Tax Credit for 2021.
Not all clients with children age 17 and under will qualify to receive these enhanced 2021 Child Tax Credit amounts, though. Thats because the increased Child Tax Credit amounts authorized by the American Rescue Plan are subject to phaseout ranges at significantly lower income amounts than the standard Child Tax Credit.

You won’t see “stimulus checks” or “economic impact payment” on your return. To get the money you’re owed, look for the Recovery Rebate Credit. This will be on line 30 of your 2020 Form 1040 or 1040-SR.
On this line, you will list the difference between what you are owed and what you received . Then, either your refund will increase or the amount you owe the IRS will decrease.
This also applies to people who normally don’t file taxes because they don’t earn enough money.
How To Claim Stimulus Funds In Your 2021 Tax Return
The third round of stimulus payments is worth up to $1,400 per person if your adjusted gross income is $75,000 or less as a single filer, or $160,000 or less as a joint filer. Families are entitled to $1,400 per dependent for dependents of any age.
Before claiming the funds, make sure they werent sent to you already. You can confirm the amount of the third payment and whether it was sent to you by logging into your IRS online account or the Get My Payment app. You can also refer to a letter sent to you by the IRS, known as Notice 1444-C, which will tell you how much is owed to you.

You may be eligible for Child Tax Credit payments even if you have not filed taxes recently. Not everyone is required to file taxes. While the deadline to sign up for monthly Child Tax Credit payments this year was November 15, you can still claim the full credit of up to $3,600 per child by filing a tax return next year.
How Can You Check On The Status Of A Missing Stimulus Payment
Its easy to check the status of your third stimulus check through the Get My Payment tool. Youll need to request a payment trace if the IRS portal shows your payment was issued but you havent received it within the time frame outlined in the chart above.
To use the tool, you need to plug in your Social Security number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number, date of birth, street address and ZIP or postal code. The portal will show your payment status, if your money has been scheduled and the payment method and date. You might also see a different message or an error.

Avoid Mistakes That Will Delay Your Refund
Simply claiming the recovery rebate credit won’t by itself delay the processing of your tax return or any tax refund. However, mistakes on your return including mistakes calculating the recovery rebate credit can slow things down and make you wait longer for your refund. Fortunately, though, you won’t necessarily lose out on the credit if you make a mistake on Line 30 of your Form 1040.
The IRS won’t calculate your recovery rebate credit or correct your entry if you enter $0 on Line 30 or leave it blank. The IRS will treat this as your decision not to claim the credit. However, if you make a mistake on the Line 30 amount , the IRS will calculate the correct amount of the credit, correct your tax return, and continue processing it.
The IRS won’t contact you before making a correction, and you won’t have to provide any additional information, but at least the IRS will send you a notice explaining any changes they make. This will also delay the processing of your return.
If you agree with the changes the IRS made, no response or action is required. If you disagree, call the IRS at the toll-free number listed on the top right corner of the notice.
Stimulus Checks: No Taxable Income Or Address
Q. Im a single person that has a valid SSN, but I do not file a tax return because I do not have any taxable income. What should I do if I didnt receive any stimulus money?
A. For the first two rounds of economic impact payments, the taxpayer will need to file a 2020 tax return with the IRS and claim the recovery rebate credit. Eligible taxpayers who did not receive the maximum amount of advance payments and taxpayers who missed receiving the first or second stimulus payments altogether can claim a credit on their tax return for the amount they qualified for but did not receive as an advance payment. For example, a single taxpayer who was eligible for but did not receive either economic impact payment would be eligible to claim a recovery rebate credit in the amount of $1,800 .
If this same eligible taxpayer did not receive the third economic impact payment, they should receive that from the IRS after their 2020 tax return is processed. Once the IRS processes the taxpayers 2020 tax return, the IRS will use the information from the 2020 tax return to determine eligibility for the third round of payments. In this case, if the IRS determines the taxpayer is eligible for the full third economic impact payment and no payment has been made to that taxpayer, the IRS will issue an additional $1,400 to that individual.
