For married couples to receive the whole $2,8000 payment, their income will need to be less than $150,000. The income limit for heads of household is $112,500.

How to Claim Your Stimulus Check

by John Waggoner, AARP, January 13, 2021

En español | The Internal Revenue Service issued about 160 million stimulus checks to eligible Americans for the first round of economic impact payments that began in April. Millions more payments, dubbed EIP 2, started going out in late December for the second round of stimulus. Nevertheless, some people never got their first-round stimulus checks, while others didn’t receive the full amount to which they were entitled. The same will be true for the second round of stimulus payments.

If you didn’t receive money from the first or second round of stimulus payments or you didn’t get the full amount you should have don’t give up. You’ll need to file the standard 1040 federal tax return form, or the 1040-SR tax return for people 65 or older, to get your missing stimulus money in the form of a tax credit that will either lower the amount of tax you owe or increase the size of your refund.

Whos Eligible For The Payment

Those eligible for the money could include people whose tax situation changed in 2021, but the change was not reflected in their latest tax return.

For example, parents who welcomed a child in 2021 may be eligible for the $1,400 payments as long as they meet income requirements.

Eligibility for the third round of stimulus checks, issued earlier this year as part of President Joe Bidens American Rescue Plan, was based on a familys last tax return filed.

Since babies born in 2021 were not factored in, the $1,400 checks will be applied to their parent or guardians 2021 tax return.

Others may be eligible for more money as well due to a change in income or the addition of a dependent.

Payments begin to phase out for people who make more than those income limits.

They completely phase out for individuals who make more than $80,000 and couples who make more than $160,000.

The number of families still owed a $1,400 stimulus check is not yet known but it is estimated to be in the millions.

The figure wont be known until the total number of births for 2021 is revealed.

Hint: Filing Electronically Could Make Your Life A Lot Easier

Even if you normally submit a paper tax return, it pays to file your 2020 taxes electronically. Not only will it be easier to calculate the Recovery Rebate Credit, but it could help you avoid other mistakes. Plus, if youâre due a refund from the Recovery Rebate Credit, youâll get it a lot faster with an electronic return.

The $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief plan includes a third round of $1,400 stimulus payments, topping off the $600 checks that were already approved by Congress in December 2020, and adding up to $2,000.

Congress passed the coronavirus relief plan with targeted income limits for maximum stimulus payments to individual taxpayers earning under $75,000 and joint filers making up to $150,000. But whereas the first and second rounds of stimulus payments phased out checks on a sliding scale of $5 for every $100 over the income limit, the new plan cuts off high earners at $80,000 for individuals and $160,000 for couples.

Recovery Rebate Credits For 2020 And 2021

Second stimulus check update: If you didnt get your stimulus payment ...

To provide financial relief during pandemic, many Americans received three Economic Impact Payments in 2020 and 2021. The third payment, which began rolling out in March 2021, served as an advance payment of the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit.

If you didnt receive the latest EIP, you could be eligible to receive the following as part of your tax refund:

  • $1,400 for a single individual
  • $2,800 for a married couple filing jointly

If you received the EIP in 2021, you should have an IRS letter Notice 1444-C showing the amount you received so you can record it on your tax return.

  • If you didnt receive the most recent EIP, you can claim it when you file your 2021 tax return.

If you didnt receive the first or second EIPs, even though youre eligible based on your income, you need to file or amend your Tax Year 2020 returns to receive those payments.

Payments Were Technically Tax Credits

The stimulus payments in 2020 and 2021 were not taxable income because they were actually advance payments of tax credits. A tax credit is a dollar-for-dollar reduction in the amount of your tax liability. Typically, you claim a tax credit when you file your taxes. The credit is used to offset any balance due and, in the case of a refundable tax credit, any excess comes to you in the form of a refund.

Due to the severity of the pandemic, Congress determined that sending payments to Americans immediately was a better course of action than waiting for them to claim the credit on their tax returns. This provided rapid relief from the severe economic repercussions of the pandemic.

If taxpayers had been forced to wait until tax filing time to receive these credits, the financial consequences would have no doubt been much more severe. Nevertheless, the function and taxability of the stimulus payments was the same as if taxpayers had received a more traditional tax credit.
