How Much Money You Could Be Getting From Child Tax Credit And Stimulus Payments

Enhanced child tax credit: Up to $3,600 per child, or up to $1,800 per child if you received monthly payments in 2021.

First stimulus check: $1,200, sent in April 2020

Second stimulus check: $600, sent in December 2020

Third stimulus check: $1,400, sent in March 2021

Note that if you filed your taxes in 2021, you should’ve already received your money from the first two stimulus checks.

Paying With Your Bank Account

This is your best option because this way youll avoid any fees. Plus, the IRS will have your account information on file for refunds and awesome things like stimulus checks. People who pay directly from their bank account can count on the quickest processand the fastest refund if youre owed one.

When you file with direct deposit, you can see your refund in as soon as one week, compared to filing with a check in the mail, which can take up to eight weeks, a Chase representative told me. E-filing with direct deposit is easy, you just need to find your account and routing numbers.

Not sure where to find your account info? Its easy. Most major banks will have it in your online account. As Ive mentioned, I bank with Chase and was able to find my account and routing numbers in the banks app in a couple of taps while at my appointment with H& R Block.

How To Claim Your Missing $600 Or $1200 Payments

The IRS Does Not Know My Bank Account Information?

The stimulus checks are generally advance payments of a tax credit.

The 2020 tax returns now offer a section where you can claim the recovery rebate credit for either the first $1,200 stimulus check or the second $600 payment if that money is due to you line 30 of Forms 1040 or 1040-SR.

On that part of the return, filers can start with the amount of stimulus money they already received and calculate any more funds which they are due. That can be done either through a worksheet provided with the tax form or through tax preparation software.

Once the IRS receives the return, the tax agency will also tally your recovery rebate credit, which means it may correct the amount you claim.

If there is a discrepancy, that could lead to a “slight delay” in processing the return, according to the tax agency.

However, for people who still do not understand why they received less money than they thought they were due, or no money at all, the process could help resolve the confusion.

The IRS will mail letters to filers in this situation to explain what prompted the correction.

Some reasons why the IRS might correct the credit amount include not providing a valid Social Security number or if you were claimed as a dependent on a 2020 tax return. If a dependent was age 17 or over as of Jan. 1, 2020, they will not be eligible for either of the first two checks.

Math errors in the rebate calculations could also prompt a correction.

What To Do If You’re Experiencing Homelessness

If you don’t have a permanent address or a bank account, you can still get a stimulus check. “The IRS has been continuing to work directly with groups inside and outside the tax community to get information directly to people experiencing homelessness and other groups to help them receive Economic Impact Payments,” IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig said.

The IRS recommends using a trusted friend, relative or shelter’s address so the agency can mail your payment if you’re unable to receive direct deposit. The agency also says banks will help a person without an account to open a low-cost or no-cost bank account.

How To Claim Stimulus Funds In Your 2021 Tax Return

The third round of stimulus payments is worth up to $1,400 per person if your adjusted gross income is $75,000 or less as a single filer, or $160,000 or less as a joint filer. Families are entitled to $1,400 per dependent for dependents of any age.

Before claiming the funds, make sure they weren’t sent to you already. You can confirm the amount of the third payment and whether it was sent to you by logging into your IRS online account or the Get My Payment app. You can also refer to a letter sent to you by the IRS, known as Notice 1444-C, which will tell you how much is owed to you.

If you lost your stimulus check or suspect it was stolen, you can request the IRS to trace your payment and get the amount automatically reimbursed to you as a tax refund. If you’re filing your 2021 tax return before your trace is complete, do not include the payment amount on the Recovery Rebate Credit Worksheet, the IRS says.

Otherwise, you’ll need to complete the Recovery Rebate Tax Credit worksheet and submit it as part of your 2021 tax return. The worksheet will help you calculate how much you can claim. Then, claim it on line 30 in Form 1040 or Form 1040-SR of your 2021 tax return.

Tax software will also guide you through this process and automatically add all the information to your tax return.

And remember, you can file your tax return for free if your income is $73,000 or less, using the IRS Free File Program.
