To date, the IRS has made 169 million payments for the third round of stimulus checks for $1,400. The agency continues to send weekly batches of payments, so there is still time if you are waiting for your money. However, there could actually be an issue with your payment and the IRS doesnt want you to call them with problems related to a missing check.

Reasons for a delay could include a lag in mail delivery , if the IRS has incorrect direct deposit information for you or if the agency suspects identity theft. There might be other problems if youre a recipient of SSI, SSDI or veterans benefits. Or maybe you received a letter from the IRS saying that your $1,400 payment was sent, but the check never arrived. Then what?

When Are Stimulus Checks Being Sent Out

Heres the rough schedule so far, courtesy of a House Committee on Ways and Means memo:

  • week of April 13: the IRS will send out 60 million payments to taxpayers for whom it has direct deposit information from their 2018 or 2019 tax returns
  • late April: the IRS will do a second run of payments to Social Security beneficiaries who didnt file tax returns in 2018 or 2019 but do have direct deposit on file
  • week of May 4: the IRS will start mailing paper checks at a rate of 5 million per week â a process that could last up to 20 weeks

Who Receives A Stimulus Check Payment

If you fall within the Adjusted Gross Income thresholds shown below and have a Social Security number, you are eligible for each economic impact payment. Those who do not qualify for payments include non-resident aliens, dependents, and estates/trusts.

The amount of payment or credit you qualify for depends on your Adjusted gross income and the number of qualified children with a Social Security Number or Adoption Tax Identification Number you can claim.

For 2020, youll qualify for up to $1,800 in credits for yourself and qualified dependents can increase the amount youre eligible to get by up to $1,100 per qualified dependent . Unfortunately, adult dependents didnt qualify for the first and second stimulus payments.

For 2021, youll qualify for $1,400 in advance credits for yourself and qualified dependents will increase the taxpayers EIP by $1,400 so far. However, adult dependents do qualify the taxpayer to receive additional amounts on the third check.

What To Do If One Of The Three Stimulus Checks Hasn’t Arrived

About 15 days after the IRS sends out your check, you should receive a letter from the agency confirming the payment. When the first round of stimulus checks went out last year, that letter included two hotline phone numbers because thousands of agents were available to help. But with the second and third rounds of checks, the IRS changed its tune, and these phone numbers may be disconnected.

Here are common scenarios that might indicate you need to look into your stimulus payment:

  • If you’re one of the millions of people who qualified for the first stimulus check but never got it.
  • If your second stimulus check has still not arrived.
  • If you got a letter from the IRS saying your third check was sent, but never received the payment. Or, if the IRS Get My Payment portal said your payment was sent, but you didn’t get it.
  • If you got some of your stimulus money from any payment, but not all of it.

You should also confirm you’re qualified to get the stimulus payment, since not everyone who received a previous check is qualified this time. If you think it’s time to take action, read for more options.

How To Claim A Missing Payment

You may be eligible to claim a Recovery Rebate Credit on your 2020 or 2021 federal tax return if you didn’t get an Economic Impact Payment or got less than the full amount.

It is important to understand that the Economic Impact Payments applied to different tax years. Depending on whether you missed the first, second or third payment, you will need to file either a 2020 or 2021 tax return to claim a Recovery Rebate Credit.

How Do I Know If I Missed Or Someone Stole My Stimulus Check

Watch your mailbox. The IRS says it’s going to mail out letters within 15 days of making people’s payments, complete with “information on how the payment was made and how to report any failure to receive the payment.” The note will go to taxpayers’ last known address.

So, if you get a letter but didn’t receive a direct deposit or paper check, you may want to contact the IRS. And remember: The IRS will not call, text or email you “asking to verify or provide your financial information so you can get an economic impact payment or your refund faster,” according to a news release. That’s a scam.

The Irs Has An Online Tool That Lets You Track The Status Of Your Third Stimulus Check

Getty Images IRS.gov

The IRS has already delivered over 100 million third stimulus checks. But if you’re still asking yourself “where’s my stimulus check,” the IRS has an online portal that lets you track your payment. It’s called the “Get My Payment” tool, and it’s an updated version of the popular tool Americans used to track the status of their first- and second-round stimulus checks.

Note that you can’t check the status of your first- or second-round stimulus payments with the updated tool. To find the amounts of these payments, create an online IRS account or refer to IRS Notices 1444 and 1444-B, which the IRS mailed after first- and second-round stimulus checks were issued. If you didn’t get an earlier payment, or your received less than the full amount, you might be able to get what you’re owed by claiming the Recovery Rebate credit on your 2020 tax return. Third-round stimulus payments aren’t used to calculate the 2020 Recovery Rebate credit, but they will be used to figure the credit amount on your 2021 tax return.

The updated “Get My Payment” tool more-or-less works the same way as the portal used for first- and second-round stimulus checks. But here’s a refresher course on what the tool does, what information you need to provide, and what information the tool gives you. Check it out now so you know what to expect before entering the portal on the IRS’s website.

Finding The Amounts Of Your First Second And Third Stimulus Checks

To find the amount of stimulus payment youve received, you can:

  • Refer to the IRS notices that were mailed to you. IRS Notice 1444shows how much you received from the first stimulus check. IRS Notice 1444-B shows how much you received from the second stimulus check. IRS Notice 1444-C shows how much you received from the third stimulus check.
  • Check your bank statements. If you had your payments direct deposited, you can find the amount of your first, second, and third stimulus check using your bank statements. They should be labeled as IRS TREAS 310 and have a code of either TAXEIP1 , TAXEIP2 , or TAXEIP3 .
  • Request an account transcript. You can request an account transcript sent electronically or by mail using Get Transcript. You can also call the IRS automated phone transcript service at 800-908-9946 or mail in Form 4506-T to have your transcript be sent by mail.
  • Create an account on IRS.gov/account. You can view your stimulus check amounts under the Tax Records tab. If you filed jointly with your spouse, you will only see your half of the stimulus check amounts. Your spouse will need to sign into their own account to see the other half of the stimulus check amounts.

To create an account, you will need:

  • Basic information: full name, email, birthday, Social Security Number or Individual Tax Identification Number , tax filing status, and current address.

The final date to qualify has already passed for filers other than those with pending ITINs. If you have already filed, you don’t have to do anything.

If you have not received a payment by now, you will most likely receive a paper check. In addition, if you did not receive a refund with your tax return or owed money at the time of filing, you will receive a paper check.

Payments will go out based on the last 3 digits of the ZIP code on your 2020 tax return. Some payments may need extra time to process for accuracy and completeness.
