Cold Hard Cash In Alaska

‘Inflation relief’ stimulus checks in California on the way

Alaskans have already started receiving Permanent Dividend Fund payments which go out annually.

This rebate provides citizens with a portion of the states oil revenues.

In order to earn the check, you need to be an Alaskan resident for at least a year and have never been convicted of state felonies or jailed.

The fund, alongside a one-off energy payment, is worth $3,284 combined this year.

Why You Did Not Qualify For A Stimulus Check

Several people have commented that they have not received or not gotten the correct amount on their stimulus checks. The IRS has provided the following reasons

  • Your adjusted gross income in your most recent tax filing approved by the IRS was greater than than the limits shown above, which are $99,000 $136,500 $198,000
  • You CANNOT be claimed as a dependent on someone elses return. This includes as a child child, student or older dependent.
  • You dont have a valid Social Security number and/or are a nonresident alien.
  • You filed Form 1040-NR or Form 1040NR-EZ, Form 1040-PR or Form 1040-SS for 2019. These are quick filing forms, but you need a standard filing

What To Do With Your Stimulus Check

When you receive a check from your state government, its tempting to blow it immediately. And if youre in need, expenses come first.

For instance, you may pay more toward high-interest debts like loans or credit cards, catch up on your mortgage or even buy school supplies. And if your emergency fund is a little bare, it might be worth stashing some of your cash away for a rainy day.

But if you dont need the money for urgent bills, we have another proposition. Thats right: investing.

Alaska Dividend: 2022 Details

In 2021, the PFD amount was $1,114, and for a short time, it seemed as though Alaskans might receive as much as $5,500 from the state in 2022. When oil prices climbed after Russias invasion of Ukraine, Alaska, a top oil producing state, anticipated a surge in revenue. Whats more, in an election year, some lawmakers apparently felt pressure to follow through on campaign promises to deliver a large dividend.

The Alaska Senate passed a budget that would include a $4,200 PFD and a $1,300 energy relief payment. However, the price tagan estimated $3.6 billionwas too much for a majority of members in the House to stomach.

Instead, the final budget approved by state legislators included $3.4 billion from the Permanent Fund, which was split between dividends to residents and the general fund. It also added a $650 energy relief payment to the 2022 PFD for a total expected payment for individuals of $3,200.

Alaskans have waited seven long years to receive a fair and sizable dividend, and it couldnt have come at a more important time, said Gov. Mike Dunleavy in a press release.

Currently, the annual payment amount is set by legislators, something Dunleavy called an arbitrary political process in his statement. He said a better approach would be to amend the Alaska Constitution to include a funding formula.

Will The Payments Cause Inflation

California is not the only state to deploy one-time rebates amid budget surpluses. Florida, for example, is sending $450 to certain families with kids.

A big question prompted by the checks sent by California and other states is whether they will exacerbate inflation.

While California “on net will come out ahead,” it may be impacted as other states export inflation with their refunds, Harvard University economics professor Jason Furman recently tweeted.

“Californians are going to come out behind from any ‘inflation relief payments’ made by Florida and other states,” he wrote.

States are sitting on record surpluses and many individuals are struggling under the weight of extremely high inflation.Jared Walczakvice president of state projects at the Tax Foundation

While states have been deploying one-time payments all year, there has been an uptick as Election Day approaches, noted Jared Walczak, vice president of state projects at the Tax Foundation.

“States are sitting on record surpluses and many individuals are struggling under the weight of extremely high inflation,” Walczak said.

That’s prompting policymakers to put the two together and want to write checks.

“Unfortunately, that’s only fueling further inflation by injecting more money in an overheated economy,” Walczak said.

Indiana: $325 Rebate Payments

Indiana found itself with a healthy budget surplus at the end of 2021, and it authorized two rebates to its residents.

In December 2021, Gov. Eric Holcomb announced that Indiana taxpayers would get a $125 one-time tax refund after they filed their 2021 taxes.

Theres no income requirement. Residents must have filed a state tax return for the year 2020 by January 3, 2022, as well as a 2021 Indiana tax return by April 18, 2022, to be eligible. Payments started in May, according to the state.

Taxpayers who filed jointly could receive a single deposit of $250.

A second rebate was approved in August 2022 to grant another $200 per taxpayer.

Most taxpayers will receive their refunds by direct deposit and the second payments started rolling out in late August. If you changed banks or didnt have direct deposit information on file, you should have received a paper check.

Individuals who are only eligible for the $200 payment will not receive them at this time. They will have to file a 2022 tax return before January 1, 2024 to claim the credit.

  • Yes,unless you are eligible for relief. If youdo not owe child support butyouare married tosomeonewhoowes child support, you may need to file an Injured Spouse Claim and Allocation -Form 8379

  • In some instances, the IRS offsets a portion of the payment sent to a spouse who filed an injured spouse claim if it has been offset by the non-injured spouses past-due child support. The FAQ on the IRS stimulus FAQ www.irs.gov/coronavirus/economic-impact-payment-information-center website states: The IRS is aware that in some instances a portion of the payment sent to a spouse who filed an injured spouse claim with his or her 2019 tax return has been offset by the non-injured spouses past-due child support. The IRS is working with the Bureau of the Fiscal Service and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Child Support Enforcement, to resolve this issue as quickly as possible. If you filed an injured spouse claim with your return and are impacted by this issue, you do not need to take any action. The injured spouse will receive their unpaid half of the total payment when the issue is resolved.

Stimulus check 2022: See if youâre eligible for $900 monthly payments

This is different from the first and second stimulus checks, which only allowed child dependents to get the additional payment.

Stimulus Checks Update: The Child And Dependent Care Credit

The biggest difference between this and other stimulus checks is that you need to ask for this once. The check will not arrive automatically, unlike the child tax credit stimulus checks.

The IRS said, The child and dependent care tax credit is a credit allowed for a percentage of work-related expenses that a taxpayer incurs for the care of qualifying persons to enable the taxpayer to work or look for work. This benefit was another that resulted from the $1.9 trillion stimulus law earlier this year, the same one that provided the new round of stimulus checks for $1,400.

You need to complete Form 2441, Child and Dependent Care Expenses, to claim the credit. And include the form when you file your federal income tax return. If your dependents are not being able to take care of themselves, it will be reflected in your records. Records that you need to maintain to support your claim for this stimulus check are in IRS Publication 503, Child and Dependent Care Expenses, and Q3.

For the time being, this benefit is only available for the 2021 tax year, for which youll file your return in 2022. The benefit can get you as much as 50% of up to $8,000 of the cost of child care and similar expenses tied to the care of children under 13. Or a spouse, parent, or another dependent who you take care of who cant care for themselves.

Why You May Not Have Gotten All Your Stimmy Money

The third-round stimulus payments, authorized by the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 and signed into law on March 11, 2021, were sent from March through December last year. Round 3 of the so-called stimmies provided a maximum credit of $1,400 per person, including all qualifying dependents claimed on a tax return.

A married couple with two qualifying dependents, for example, are eligible to receive a maximum credit of $5,600, depending on income limits. And if you brought a baby into the world last year, youll be able to file for up to $1,400 that youre owed for your new family member if you claim the child as a dependent.

The size of the credit, however, gets reduced for single filers with adjusted gross income of more than $75,000 and for married couples filing jointly with earnings of more than $150,000. For heads of household, the credit is reduced between $120,000 and $112,500.

The credit disappears entirely for individuals with AGI above $80,000 and for married couples filing jointly who earn more than $160,000. Heads of household with incomes of more than $120,000 also dont get the stimulus check. Most eligible Americans have already received the payments, according to the IRS.

What Can You Do If You Did Not Get The First Or Second Stimulus Payments

If you did not receive payment for the first or second round of economic impact payments or believe you did not receive the full amount to which you were entitled there is a way to resolve it. You must file a 2020 tax return and claim the 2020 recovery rebate credit for the amount you are owed.

Lost payments from any of the three rounds can be traced by the IRS. If you find that the IRS records indicate payment being made to you, you can request that it trace the payment. Tracing takes time and will not begin immediately. Depending on how the payment was made to you by the IRS, the following waiting periods apply:

1). Five days from the date of a direct deposit that your bank did not receive.

2). Four weeks for mailed checks.

3). Six weeks for a check mailed but forwarded to another address because you moved.

4). Nine weeks when a check was mailed to a foreign address.

If you filed a tax return within the past three years, check with your tax preparer to verify the address on the return and the method you chose to receive any tax refund that may have been due before initiating a trace through the IRS.
