How Long Is A State Tax Refund Check Good For

Are you missing a stimulus payment? IRS agent explains how to get that money.

So, how long a state tax refund check is good for will vary from state to state, but generally its 6 months to a year. If you have an expired state tax refund check, you should contact the state and request a new check. Just like with the federal checks, youre still entitled to what the government owes you.

How To Claim Your Rebate Credit

To get your money, youll need to claim the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit on your 2021 return. Filing electronically can guide you through the form. Dont claim any missing first or second stimulus payments on your 2021 return rather, youll need to file a 2020 return or an amended return to get these payments.

The rebate credit does not count toward your taxable income. And be aware that youll need to fill out your tax return accurately and include the precise amount of stimulus payments the IRS has actually paid you to avoid a delay in your returns processing. If you enter the incorrect amount, it can hold up the processing of your return, Greene-Lewis cautions. The agency will not automatically calculate your 2021 rebate. It is on you, the taxpayer, to claim the Recovery Rebate Credit, Steber says.

Request A Tax Credit Or Irs Payment Trace

If youre quite sure the first or second stimulus payment for which you were eligible never arrived or you received only a partial payment, you can claim a tax credit the Recovery Rebate Credit for the full amount of either or both on your 2020 tax return.

Follow IRS instructions for claiming the credit on Form 1040 or Form 1040-SR or use an online tax prep program that automatically figures your eligibility for the credit using the IRS worksheet.

If your third stimulus check is late and youve received a letter in the mail advising you that it has been disbursed, you can request an IRS payment trace to try to find the missing payment. Wait five days from the direct deposit date and four weeks from the check mailing date to initiate your request.

You can call the IRS at 800-919-9835 to request a trace by phone or mail completed Form 3911 to the IRS processing center corresponding with your home address. Payment traces typically take six weeks to complete.

A payment trace request will cancel your original stimulus check or debit card or reverse your direct deposit payment, so only request it if youre sure the payment isnt coming.

If you file your tax return before the trace is complete, dont include the amount of your Recovery Rebate Credit on your return.

If the payment trace determines that youre eligible for missing funds, the IRS will adjust your tax balance with no action needed from you.

Who Is Eligible For The Child Tax Credit 2021

Eligible Americans with income below $75,000, or married couples with income below $150,000, were eligible for the full amount of three rounds of stimulus payments that were made by the federal government in 2020 and 2021. Those stimulus income limitations also applied to the enhanced child tax credit although partial child tax credits were available for people with higher incomes.

Advance payments of the enhanced child tax credits were sent to people from July to December 2021. The monthly payments were up to $250 or $300 per child, for a period of six months.

How To Make Sure You Receive Your Credits As Soon As Possible

The Recovery Rebate Credit worksheet requires that you know the specific amounts you were supposed to receive, according to the IRS. By doing the investigation and calculation work in advance, youll most likely end up getting your stimulus check and tax refund faster.

To get it correct, that cannot be overemphasized, Steber says. These Recovery Rebate Credits are real cash, and they sent out hundreds of millions in the two tranches. If you did in fact receive it and forget about it, it could add weeks to your tax return timeline.

Your tax refund will be passed more quickly and safely if you electronically file and provide a direct deposit, the IRS says.

Typically, the IRS is good at sending out refunds within a couple of weeks within electronically filing, Bronnenkant says.

Not included in 2020s Recovery Rebate Credit is a third stimulus payment worth $1,400 or more, distributed to Americans beginning in mid-March after President Joe Biden signed the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan. Taxpayers will most likely have to wait until 2021 to claim those missing relief payments, Jaeger says.

The CARES Act ensures that the vaccine itself and its administration is free to beneficiaries through their Medicare Part B plans or through their Medicare Advantage when they receive the vaccine from an in- network provider.

Additionally, the Families First Coronavirus Act requires all private insurance plans to cover coronavirus testing without deductibles, coinsurance, or co-pays. That bill also prohibits plans from using tools like prior authorization to limit access to testing. And the CARES Act ensures that the policy covers all tests that meet the appropriate standards. Insurers also have to cover fees for visits to the ER, an urgent care center, or a doctors office associated with getting a test without cost sharing.

Additionally, the Affordable Care Act requires preventive services and vaccines to be covered by private insurance without cost-sharing.

If you have an adjusted gross income of up to $75,000 , you could be eligible for the full amount of the recovery rebate $600 for eligible individuals, $1,200 for joint taxpayers, and an additional $600 for each dependent child under 17.

*Note, adjusted gross income is your gross income like wages, salaries, or interest minus adjustments for eligible deductions like student loan interest or your IRA deduction. Your AGI can be found on line 8b of your 2019 Form 1040.

The same eligibility rules apply to the second stimulus payment as the first one. You must have a valid Social Security number, and you cant have been claimed as a dependent on someone elses 2019 tax return.

How Your Return Can Help With A $1400 Stimulus Check

Since March, the government has been deploying new batches of stimulus checks weekly.

Each of those rounds has included payments to people that were prompted by the IRS processing their 2020 tax returns.

That goes for people who do not typically file tax returns, but did so this year in order to get their $1,400 checks. Once those forms were processed, the IRS sent their payments.

In addition, people who already received their third stimulus check, and who are due more money after the IRS completed their latest return, received “plus-up” payments from the agency.

That could happen if their financial circumstances changed since their 2019 return, such as their income declining last year.

Not everyone needs to file a federal return in order to get their stimulus checks. If you receive federal benefits and do not typically file, you should get your payment automatically. However, you may want to file a return in order to submit information on eligible dependents.

In addition, if you used the IRS online non-filer tool last year, you should not have to resubmit your information.

The non-filer tool has not been reopened this year. Instead, the IRS has urged people who it does not already have on record to file tax returns, which can help the agency evaluate whether or not you may be eligible for other tax credits.

Is The Third Stimulus Check Considered Income

The IRS says its done sending stimulus checks for now heres how to ...

No. The Economic Impact Payment is not considered to be taxable income. “And you shouldn’t report it as income on your 2021 federal income tax return,” according to Letter 6475.

You also do not need to repay any of the third stimulus payment money that you received. That’s true even if you’d qualify for a smaller payment based on what you’d calculate for your 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit.

You Had A Lifestyle Change In 2020 That Wasnt Reflected In Your 2019 Taxes

A lot can change in a year, and its very possible the IRS didnt have enough up-to-date information accurately reflecting your financial situation.

A few circumstances that could qualify you for more money: You had a baby in 2020, or adopted or fostered a child. Less common, say you share joint custody with a child but only rotate that responsibility every other year. You might be eligible for extra money by filing for a credit, and there are instances when your former spouse might pocket extra money as well.

Say I filed with Susie Q. in 2019 and I got the stimulus checks for that child, and then my divorced spouse filed with Susie Q. for 2020. She would get the Recovery Rebate Credit as well, says Mark Jaeger, director of tax development at TaxAct. Its a little bit of double dipping, but it is something that is allowed.

Additionally, maybe you got married or divorced. Perhaps you graduated college and started working, meaning youre no longer considered a dependent. And, as is likely the case for millions of Americans, perhaps you had a higher-paying job in 2019 but lost that position in 2020. Even individuals who were working in 2019 but retired in 2020 could be eligible for the credit.

These are just a sampling of circumstances that might mean youre eligible for a stimulus check or a higher amount.

Theres a lot of reasons why you may be due more that are all legitimate, Steber says. Its real money, and its a lot of money.

Why You May Be Missing Stimulus Money

The first round of stimulus checks, mandated by the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act, was signed into law in March 2020. The CARES Act gave a maximum $1,200 per person and $500 per eligible dependent child under 17. Payments were limited by 2019 or 2018 income as reported on federal income tax forms. Individuals who had more than $75,000 in adjusted gross income had their stimulus check reduced by $5 for every $100 of income, and the same was true for married couples filing jointly with income above $150,000. Individuals who earned more than $99,000 and couples who earned more than $198,000 jointly did not receive checks.

The second round of stimulus checks gives a maximum $600 per eligible person and dependent child. Married couples who filed jointly in 2019 receive $1,200 total . Families get an additional $600 for each eligible dependent child under 17. The income limits are the same for the second round of stimulus payments as they were for the first, though the phaseout amounts are lower since the maximum payment is $600 vs. $1,200 during the first round. Individuals who earned more than $87,000 and couples who earned more than $174,000 jointly won’t receive second-round checks. The deadline for the IRS to issue second-round payments is Jan. 15.

Am I Automatically Eligible For The Third Round Of Stimulus Payments If I Received A Check In The First Or Second Round

No. Because stimulus eligibility was different for each round of payments, its possible that you were eligible for some but not all rounds.

For example, if youre a single filer with no dependents whose 2019 income was higher than $87,000, you likely were not eligible for the second or third round of payments.

How To Track The Status Of Your Stimulus Check

Missing a stimulus check from the IRS?

The IRS has created a Get My Payment portal so you can learn the status of your payment. It provides updates on whether the IRS is processing your check or has already scheduled your payment whether your payment will be made by a paper check, prepaid debit card or through direct deposit to your bank account and whether there are problems holding up your payment.

To use this portal, you must input your Social Security number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number along with your date of birth, street address and postal code. The IRS updates its status tracking information daily. You should get a letter about 15 days after the IRS issues your payment telling you how much you received and how you received it.

After using the IRS tracker, you may sign up for a free service from the post office that tells you exactly when your stimulus check will arrive in the mail.
