How To Claim Your Money
The easiest way for a taxpayer to get a stimulus payment, or additional payment, if they are, in fact, due more, is to apply on their 2020 tax return, explained Mark Steber, chief tax officer for Jackson Hewitt Tax Services.
There will be a schedule and line on the tax return to reconcile what they have received so far, and the amount actually due to them based on their 2020 tax return, continued Steber.
The IRS says that eligible individuals can claim the Recovery Rebate Credit on their 2020 Form 1040 or 1040-SR. These forms can also be used by people who are not normally required to file tax returns but are eligible for the credit.
If you are, indeed, due more money, it will show up on the 2020 tax return as an additional refund. Conversely, however, if you received too much cash via a stimulus payment, you do not have to pay it back.
And for those concerned about how this might complicate the filing process this year, Greene-Lewis tells filers not to worry.
TurboTax has guidance related to stimulus payments and other impacts of Covid-19, explained Greene-Lewis. It will ask up front if the filer received a stimulus payment and then calculate the recovery rebate credit based on actual 2020 income.

Stimulus Checks In Other States
Illinois isn’t the only state sending rebates, refunds and other payments in 2022. Many other states are delivering “stimulus checks” to residents this year, including other highly-populated states like California, New York, and Virginia.
The state payments generally aren’t as much as the federal stimulus checks paid out in 2020 and 2021, but they can still provide a much need infusion of cash for families hit hard by rising inflation. And the funds typically come from budget surpluses or COVID-19 relief funds from the federal government. So, state residents aren’t necessarily being taxed to cover the costs of these payments.
Other Ways To Find Your Account Information
- You can request an Account Transcript by mail. Note that each Account Transcript only covers a single tax year, and may not show the most recent penalties, interest, changes or pending actions.
- If you’re a business, or an individual who filed a form other than 1040, you can obtain a transcript by submitting Form 4506-T, Request for Transcript of Tax Return.

Who Is Eligible For The Recovery Rebate Credit
According to the IRS, most people who were eligible for the third round of payments have already received their stimulus checks but there are a few situations why someone might not have received it or received the wrong amount. For example:
Youre claiming a new dependent in 2021 .
Your marital status changed in 2021.
Your adjusted gross income from 2019 or 2020 was high enough to make you ineligible for a stimulus check, but your 2021 AGI is now lower and within the qualifying threshold.
You did not have a Social Security number but received one by the 2021 tax deadline.
How To Claim A Missing Payment
You may be eligible to claim a Recovery Rebate Credit on your 2020 or 2021 federal tax return if you didn’t get an Economic Impact Payment or got less than the full amount.
It is important to understand that the Economic Impact Payments applied to different tax years. Depending on whether you missed the first, second or third payment, you will need to file either a 2020 or 2021 tax return to claim a Recovery Rebate Credit.

What If You Have Trouble With The Tool
To use the Get My Payment tool, you must first verify your identity by answering security questions. If the information you enter does not match IRS records, you will receive an error message. To avoid this:
- Double-check the information requested
- Make sure what you enter is accurate
- Try entering your street address in a different way and
- Use the US Postal Services ZIP Lookup tool to look up the standard version of your address, and enter it into exactly as it appears on file with the Postal Service.
If your answers do not match the IRS records three times, youll be locked out of Get My Payment for security reasons. If that happens, you must wait 24 hours and try again. If you cant verify your identity, you wont be able to use Get My Payment. Unfortunately, theres no fix for that: the IRS says not to not contact them.
However, if you verified your identity and received Payment Status Not Available, this means that the IRS cannot determine your eligibility for a payment right now. There are several reasons this could happen, including:
- You didnt file either a 2018 or 2019 tax return or
- Your recently filed return has not been fully processed.
Again, the IRS says theres no fix for that and you should not contact them.
Income Tax Calculator: Estimate Your Taxes
Your adjusted gross income
Its important to understand the income thresholds to receive a stimulus check. First, there is no minimum adjusted gross income threshold. However, there is a maximum income threshold. The stimulus check amount phases out by $5 for every $100 above certain income levels based on your tax filing status:
- Single Filer: $75,000
If your adjusted gross income is less than these amounts, you can receive the full stimulus check amount of $1,200 for single taxpayers, $2,400 for married couples filing jointly and $500 for each dependent child age 16 or younger. If you are a single tax filer who has adjusted gross income greater than $99,000 or a married couple filing jointly with no children that earns more than $198,000, then you wont qualify for a stimulus check.
You didnt provide banking information to the IRS
So, you didnt provide any banking information to the IRS? No worries. First, you can receive a paper check. The IRS will start sending paper stimulus checks to taxpayers on April 24. Taxpayers with the lowest annual adjusted gross income will receive their stimulus check first, beginning with those who earn less than $10,000. Each week, approximately 5 million paper stimulus checks will be sent at increasing income increments. For example, stimulus checks will be sent to those who earn $10,001 – $20,000 on May 1. This process will continue each week from May to September until all stimulus checks have been distributed.

Maybe. If the noncustodial parent owes you child support arrears and the total arrears onall ofthe noncustodial parents cases meets the threshold amounts indicated in Questions #2, then you should be entitled to receive monies intercepted from the noncustodial parents tax return. Others may see a “need more information” message, which the tax agency said means the payment was returned to the IRS because the U.S. Postal Service wasn’t able to deliver the check. In that case, people can use the “Get My Payment” site to provide the IRS with bank information but the tax agency said that only people who get the “need more information” message will be able to add their bank information to the portal.

The Irs Has The Wrong Bank Info
The IRS is sending payment to the bank account it has on file for you. If you’ve changed banks and closed the account, or the bank number on file with the IRS is wrong, the payment won’t go through, but you’ll still get your money. As the IRS says, “If the account is closed or no longer active, the bank will reject the deposit and you will be issued a check that will be mailed to the address we have on file for you.”
