H& R Block missing stimulus checks: What to do

If you fall within the Adjusted Gross Income thresholds shown below and have a Social Security number, you are eligible for each economic impact payment. Those who do not qualify for payments include non-resident aliens, dependents, and estates/trusts.

The amount of payment or credit you qualify for depends on your Adjusted gross income and the number of qualified children with a Social Security Number or Adoption Tax Identification Number you can claim.

For 2020, youll qualify for up to $1,800 in credits for yourself and qualified dependents can increase the amount youre eligible to get by up to $1,100 per qualified dependent . Unfortunately, adult dependents didnt qualify for the first and second stimulus payments.

For 2021, youll qualify for $1,400 in advance credits for yourself and qualified dependents will increase the taxpayers EIP by $1,400 so far. However, adult dependents do qualify the taxpayer to receive additional amounts on the third check.

How To Track The Third Stimulus Check And Find Your Payments Status

We have confirmed with the IRS that they have the accurate banking information from the tax filing for all TurboTax filers, McMahon said in an email. If the taxpayer closed their personal bank account where they received a recent tax refund, the IRS may still try to deposit their stimulus payment there if it is the latest banking information that the IRS has on file for them.

Some H& R Block users, meanwhile, griped that their checks were incorrectly deposited onto Emerald Cards, prepaid debit cards that customers can use to receive their tax refunds, CNBC reported.

But the company says those problems were isolated incidents in a distribution process thats been much smoother than the last one. H& R Block said on Tuesday that all stimulus payments headed to Emerald Cards have been processed.

While there were individuals who had questions or needed a replacement Emerald Card, the systemic issue seen during the second stimulus disbursement was solved and was not an issue this time, an H& R Block spokesperson said.

Those affected by the glitches may have to wait a bit longer to receive the money.

The IRS said any payments sent to closed bank accounts will be returned to the feds and reissued in less than two weeks. Some reissued payments are already on the way, according to the agency.

STIMULUS CHECK UPDATE: MISSING PAYMENTS, H& R BLOCK, TURBO

People have understandably been refreshing their bank apps and the IRS Get My Payment portal every minute to see if their $600 stimulus payment has arrived. Yesterday, though, the internet started buzzing about a new possible reason why some people still havent received their $600: The IRS deposited the money to the wrong accounts, all thanks to a mix-up involving tax preparation services like H& R Block and TurboTax. Instead of the stimulus check going into peoples personal bank accounts, the $600 was going to tax preparation pass-through accounts. Great.

H& R Blocks Twitter account explained that one way to tell if this happened to you is if you see an unrecognized bank account number on the IRS Get My Payment portal. If so, it may be because you opted to use H& R Blocks Refund Transfer service, which lets you authorize the company to take its fees directly out of your tax refund, as well as allows them to send you the remainder of the refund via direct deposit, check, or a debit card. This is where the problem with stimulus payments comes into play.

The IRS Get My Payment website may display an account number you dont recognize. If you took a Refund Transfer, it may be reflecting that account number. Check your 2019 return to confirm.

Some people have reported that their tax preparation service has been depositing back not the full $600 but odd amounts under that which adds another layer of confusion to this saga.

What Should You Do

The IRS told taxpayers not to call the agency or their banks with questions about payment timing and should instead visit the IRS.gov website.

Those who dont receive a direct deposit should monitor their mail for either a paper check or a prepaid debit card, the agency said.

Payments must be sent by the government by Jan. 15, according to the IRS. Customers who qualify for the $600 but don’t receive their payment via direct deposit or in the mail can still get it this tax season by claiming a special rebate credit when they file their 2020 taxes, the IRS said.

But some Americans arent keen on that method.

For me, a credit would get eaten up in taxes and would be no benefit at all,” says Kerns, who was hoping to stash the money away in her savings because shes uncertain about her job security. “It would absolutely break my heart.”

Stimulus Checks: Marriages And Divorce

Q. We got married in 2020 how does that affect the amount we will get?A. Filing as jointly married versus separate for 2020 wont change the total maximum stimulus amount and you wont have to repay any stimulus you already received. However, now that youre married, you should determine whether it makes more sense to file jointly or separately, and its possible that one spouse with a higher income could affect eligibility for the recovery rebate credit.

For example, lets say you and your spouse had AGI amounts of $35,000 and $105,000 respectively. As single filers, youd receive the full stimulus payment because your AGI of $35,000 is below the threshold, but your spouses AGI of $105,000 would be over the limit and wouldnt qualify for a stimulus payment. However, if you file jointly for 2020, your combined AGI of $140,000 is below the threshold for joint filers, so you could claim your spouses portion as the recovery rebate credit.

Those who get married in 2021 will have a similar situation when they file their 2021 return.

Q. How does a recent divorce affect my stimulus check?A. What if you were married and filed jointly on your tax return and have since become separated or divorced? If the IRS issued a payment based on a jointly filed return, you will allocate half of each payment to each spouse when you calculate your credit on your single status returns.

Turbotax H& r Block Customers Say Stimulus Checks Went To Wrong Accounts

Customers have accused the tax-preparation companies of sending their funds to closed bank accounts.

TurboTax and H& R Block customers are voicing their anger after learning that two tax-preparation companies sent their stimulus payments to the wrong accounts.

The news comes after TurboTax announced on Twitter that it had worked with the Internal Revenue Service to ensure the agency had the correct bank account information to distribute the checks. The company also told customers that the payment would be based on information from their latest tax return and that the money would go directly to the bank account or address that the IRS had on file.

In a press release, H& R Block similarly said it understood “how important coronavirus relief benefits, including third stimulus payments, are to millions of American households and small business owners,” providing information on when customers should expect their money.

Still, many customers said they haven’t seen the payments in their accounts. Longtime TurboTax customer Keri Behling told CNBC that she checked the status of her payment on the IRS’s Get My Payment tool but saw that the funds had been deposited in the wrong bank account. Behling said she had the same issue with her second stimulus payment.

Twitter users also took to the social media platform to direct their frustration at the company.

What Happens If You Get A ‘not Available’ Message

H& R Block stimulus check issues

Other TurboTax users haven’t been as lucky as Trent.

DeeAnna Kerns, who lives in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, has used TurboTax to file her taxes for the past five years and had no issues receiving her first stimulus check. But she was left scratching her head after she saw a not available” message when checking her account on the IRS website.

I keep getting an error message, which leads me to believe that my stimulus check was redirected to TurboTax’s account, said Kerns, 36, who works at a nonprofit that assists people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Anyone who sees this message won’t receive a second Economic Impact Payment by mail or direct deposit and instead needs to “claim the Recovery Rebate Credit on your 2020 Tax Return,” according to the IRS.

But others with that status like Trent still received the money this week.

TurboTax didn’t immediately respond to questions as to why some customers had the “not available” status but still received the money.

H& r Block Customers Experiencing $600 Stimulus Payment Delays

Americans across the country are finally receiving their second stimulus checks, though after eight months of waiting, some H& R block costumers will have to wait a little longer to see that $600 payment show up in their account. As the Internal Revenue Service continues to distribute the second round of direct payments, a mixup has led to some customers experiencing a major delay in receiving the much-needed payment.

As the IRS and the U.S. Treasury Department began issuing the second round of stimulus checks last week, dozens of H& R Block customers took to social media to air their frustrations when their payments did not appear in their accounts. Customers checking the IRS’ Get My Payment online portal, where the status of stimulus checks can be tracked, reported their $600 payment ended up in an unfamiliar account number. According to a statement from H& R Block, this is due to a mixup the company is currently investigating. The company explained that while people who receive their tax refund checks via direct deposit automatically get their stimulus check from the government to that account number, H& R Block costumers who used the Refund Transfer option in 2019 may find that their stimulus payment has been sent to that temporary account.

Q How Much Was The Second Stimulus Check For

A. Your second stimulus check depended on your 2019 income. The full amount was $600 per individual, $1,200 per couple, and $600 per qualifying child under the age of 17. For expats to qualify for the full second stimulus check, you must have had $75,000 or less in income if you filed as single, $112,500 or less if you filed as head of household, or $150,000 or less if you filed jointly with your spouse or as a qualifying widow. Youd also then qualify for a $600 payment per qualifying child.

For those above this income level, your stimulus check amount would lower $5 for each $100 your AGI exceeded the above thresholds.

Q. Did I have to pay back the amount I get?

A. No.

Q. Will this affect my 2020 tax return?

A. It could only help your 2020 return. If you are eligible for more stimulus than you were awarded, you may be able to claim it as a credit on your return that either decreases your tax liability or increases your refund. If youre eligible for less or received the full amount, you dont have to pay it back and it wont affect your return.

Q. Will I owe tax on this second stimulus check in 2021 or have to pay it back?

A. No, this is considered a tax credit, not income, so you will not need to pay taxes on it in 2021 or pay it back.

Q. Im retired overseas and dont file a tax return did I qualify for the second stimulus check?

Q. What if I didnt have an SSN but filed a U.S. return. Did I get to take advantage of the second stimulus check?

Turbotax And H& r Block Customers Fume As Stimulus Check Glitch Sees Payments Sent To Wrong Accounts

H& R Block confirms mix

TURBOTAX and H& R Block customers are raging on social media after a glitch has seen their stimulus checks be sent to the wrong accounts.

Dozens of people who filed tax returns through the two companies are struggling to receive their $1,400 coronavirus relief payments for the second time in three months.

Several customers told CNBC their money was wrongly deposited in temporary pass through accounts the tax companies had set up for them in the past.

This is the exact same glitch that happened to more than 13 million taxpayers when the federal government issued $600 checks back in mid-January.

After that incident, both TurboTax and H& R Block sought to assure customers that they had worked with the IRS to fix the issue, and that their third stimulus checks would be directed in the correct place.

“We are working closely with the IRS, and weve confirmed that the IRS has accurate bank account information for all TurboTax customers,” TurboTax said last week as the IRS began rolling out payments.

The IRS set the official payment date as March 17, however by Thursday morning hundreds have complained on social media that they either still haven’t received the payment or cannot access the funds.

A large number of complaints on Twitter were caused by checks being directed to incorrect accounts once again – even though the affected customers had updated their banking information.

Information From H& r Block Regarding Missing Stimulus Payments

This is from H& R Block via press release that’s now on their site:

Many second stimulus payments were deposited on Emerald Cards. All second stimulus payments that H& R Block was able to process were immediately deposited on to H& R Blocks Emerald Prepaid Mastercard® or to customers bank accounts, depending upon how 2019 tax refunds were received.

Emerald Card customers can call 1-866-353-1266 and receive stimulus payment information by entering the last four digits of their Emerald Card account.

All other customers can call 1-800-HRBLOCK and by using your Social Security number, you may be able to receive automated second stimulus payment information.

You may not recognize an account number. If the IRS Get My Payment tool displays an account number you dont recognize, H& R Block customer service agents are ready to help and may be able to provide additional information. .

Some second stimulus payments were returned to the IRS. All financial institutions are required to return second stimulus payments in certain circumstances, such as when they are sent to a closed account. In these cases, payments were returned to the IRS and a check is likely to be sent by the IRS. This affected less than 1% of second stimulus payments processed by H& R Block.

Q How Will I Get My Third Stimulus Check If Im An American Living Overseas

A. There are two ways overseas Americans can get their third stimulus payment: Direct deposit or through the mail.

You should get your check via direct deposit if you received your latest tax refund through direct deposit or if the IRS has your direct deposit info from the last round of stimulus checks and you havent filed yet this year.

You need to have an account with a U.S. bank in order to get direct deposit.

We recommend you update your address if you:

  • Dont know what address is on file
  • Have moved to a different address
  • Want your check sent somewhere other than the address they have on file

In addition to Form 8822, Change of Address, you may be able to update your address via phone, through a written statement, or on your tax return. You can see the IRS most up-to-date address change info on the IRS website.

Q. What happens if I live abroad and my direct deposit payment is returned by my U.S. financial institution?

A. Once your payment is returned, the IRS will issue your payment by mail as a check or U.S. Treasury-issued debit card. Typically, IRS will reissue the payment by mail within two weeks. Once the payment is reissued, the IRS Get My Payment tool will update to reflect your payment status.

Q. What if my third stimulus check was for the wrong amount?

A. If you didnt receive the full amount of the third payment you were owed , there are two times when you may receive additional stimulus money:
