H& R Block confirms mixup in 2nd stimulus payments, causing delays

TurboTax and H& R Block customers are reportedly struggling to get their stimulus checks once again but officials say the problems are less widespread this time around.

Dozens of people who filed tax returns through the companies have had their $1,400 coronavirus relief payments sent to the wrong accounts, according to CNBC.

A similar glitch plagued 13 million taxpayers in January, when the Internal Revenue Service initially sent their $600 checks to pass-through bank accounts that tax-prep companies set up to receive the customers previous tax refunds.

The IRS says it worked with the tax industry to fix the glitch and ran tests to make sure the latest checks would land in the right place.

While some money can be sent to closed accounts in any payment process, the IRS believes the volume of payments going to closed accounts will be significantly less than any previous round of Economic Impact Payments, the agency said in a statement.

But many TurboTax customers told CNBC that their money was once again dropped in old pass-through accounts, while others said their checks went to accounts they used to use but had closed.

Several customers aired similar complaints on Twitter, saying their checks had been directed to incorrect accounts even though theyd tried to update their banking information.

  • Stimulus Checks: Marriages And Divorce

    Q. We got married in 2020 how does that affect the amount we will get?A. Filing as jointly married versus separate for 2020 wont change the total maximum stimulus amount and you wont have to repay any stimulus you already received. However, now that youre married, you should determine whether it makes more sense to file jointly or separately, and its possible that one spouse with a higher income could affect eligibility for the recovery rebate credit.

For example, lets say you and your spouse had AGI amounts of $35,000 and $105,000 respectively. As single filers, youd receive the full stimulus payment because your AGI of $35,000 is below the threshold, but your spouses AGI of $105,000 would be over the limit and wouldnt qualify for a stimulus payment. However, if you file jointly for 2020, your combined AGI of $140,000 is below the threshold for joint filers, so you could claim your spouses portion as the recovery rebate credit.

Those who get married in 2021 will have a similar situation when they file their 2021 return.

    Q. How does a recent divorce affect my stimulus check?A. What if you were married and filed jointly on your tax return and have since become separated or divorced? If the IRS issued a payment based on a jointly filed return, you will allocate half of each payment to each spouse when you calculate your credit on your single status returns.

    Stimulus Checks: Recently Deceased

    Q. I received a stimulus check for a deceased relative. What do I do?A. It depends when your loved one passed. For the first and second payments, individuals who died before January 1, 2020 are not eligible for payments. Individuals who died in 2020 are not eligible for the third stimulus check while anyone who died after December 31, 2020 may be eligible for the recovery rebate credit on their 2021 tax return.

During 2020, the IRS asked for stimulus checks/payments sent to ineligible deceased persons be returned. If the payment was made to joint filers, then youd only need to return the decedents portion. The IRS outlines instructions for how to return the payment on their website.

Those who opted into receiving tax refund payments on a debit card are more likely to see an account number they don’t recognize on the IRS Get My Payment portal, according to the IRS.

“But dont worry we have sent these payments on to the method you chose for Refund Transfer: direct deposit, check or Emerald Card,” H& R Block said Monday night. “The money should be there by the end of the day.”

Why Stimulus Checks Were Delayed Last Time

Millions of people file their taxes through online tax software providers every year. It can be simple, convenient, and more affordable than visiting a CPA .

In an effort to extend that convenience, H& R Block, TurboTax, and a few others allow customers to opt into their refund transfer products. These let the customer pay for the company’s services through their tax refund for an additional fee, instead of via credit or debit card. To complete this process, the company sets up a holding account where the IRS can deposit the refund and the company can take its fee before sending the rest of the money to the taxpayer’s bank account.

During the rollout of the second stimulus check in January, the IRS erroneously sent payments to these holding accounts for many H& R Block and TurboTax customers. In most cases, the money was later redirected to taxpayers others had to claim the credit on their tax returns. H& R Block was able to get the funds to customers within days despite the IRS’s mixup.

Jones said H& R Block has worked with the IRS to ensure the payments go to the customer’s “ultimate” bank account the account where their refund ends up as quickly as possible this time. The IRS is also labeling the payments as stimulus rather than refund, Jones added, which helps direct the money to the right location.

In a statement to Insider, TurboTax said it has also resolved the issue and filers will get their payments sent to the correct bank account.

    Why Use Direct Deposit

The quick answer is: you get your money faster and not only your tax refund. As one way to help Americans deal with COVID-19-related unemployment, the U.S. government, during the Trump and Biden administrations, sent stimulus checks to Americans, which were cash payments citizens could use as they pleased.

Americans who had filed taxes and given the IRS their bank account information received their checks first often in a matter of days. Those who mailed in their taxes and paid or received their refunds with a check often had to wait weeks for their stimulus checks.

What If I Don’t Recognize The Bank Account Number

Don’t panic it’s most likely not fraud. It actually has something to do with how you filed your 2019 taxes and received your refund.

Millions of people file their taxes through online tax software providers every year. It can be simple, convenient, and more affordable than visiting a CPA .

In an effort to extend that convenience, H& R Block, TurboTax, and a few others offer users an option to pay for their services through their refund instead of via credit or debit card on the spot. It sounds easy, but there’s usually an additional fee tacked on. H& R Block and TurboTax both charge $40 per federal refund for this option, on top of the fee you paid to prep and file your taxes.

refund transfer programsplus an additional fee of up to $40

Because H& R Block and TurboTax have first claim to your refund, they essentially set up a holding account where the IRS will deposit your refund when it’s ready. This account number is listed on your tax return and that’s what you’re seeing in the “Get My Payment” tool. For a typical refund, after the tax provider’s share is taken out, the rest is deposited in your bank account of choice. It usually happens quickly.

Unfortunately, that process is in conflict with how the IRS handles stimulus payments. In situations where holding accounts are no longer active the tax provider has already taken their fee and transferred the refund to the taxpayer stimulus payments are bouncing back to the IRS.

Stimulus Checks: No Taxable Income Or Address

H& R Block, TurboTax confirm mix-up in 2nd stimulus payments, causing delays

    Q. Im a single person that has a valid SSN, but I do not file a tax return because I do not have any taxable income. What should I do if I didnt receive any stimulus money?

    A. For the first two rounds of economic impact payments, the taxpayer will need to file a 2020 tax return with the IRS and claim the recovery rebate credit. Eligible taxpayers who did not receive the maximum amount of advance payments and taxpayers who missed receiving the first or second stimulus payments altogether can claim a credit on their tax return for the amount they qualified for but did not receive as an advance payment. For example, a single taxpayer who was eligible for but did not receive either economic impact payment would be eligible to claim a recovery rebate credit in the amount of $1,800 .

If this same eligible taxpayer did not receive the third economic impact payment, they should receive that from the IRS after their 2020 tax return is processed. Once the IRS processes the taxpayers 2020 tax return, the IRS will use the information from the 2020 tax return to determine eligibility for the third round of payments. In this case, if the IRS determines the taxpayer is eligible for the full third economic impact payment and no payment has been made to that taxpayer, the IRS will issue an additional $1,400 to that individual. The FAQs available on this IRS webpage help explain the process someone should follow in this situation to complete their tax return.

Don’t Miss: Third Stimulus Check File Taxes

How To Track The Third Stimulus Check And Find Your Payments Status

We have confirmed with the IRS that they have the accurate banking information from the tax filing for all TurboTax filers, McMahon said in an email. If the taxpayer closed their personal bank account where they received a recent tax refund, the IRS may still try to deposit their stimulus payment there if it is the latest banking information that the IRS has on file for them.

Some H& R Block users, meanwhile, griped that their checks were incorrectly deposited onto Emerald Cards, prepaid debit cards that customers can use to receive their tax refunds, CNBC reported.

But the company says those problems were isolated incidents in a distribution process thats been much smoother than the last one. H& R Block said on Tuesday that all stimulus payments headed to Emerald Cards have been processed.

While there were individuals who had questions or needed a replacement Emerald Card, the systemic issue seen during the second stimulus disbursement was solved and was not an issue this time, an H& R Block spokesperson said.

Those affected by the glitches may have to wait a bit longer to receive the money.

The IRS said any payments sent to closed bank accounts will be returned to the feds and reissued in less than two weeks. Some reissued payments are already on the way, according to the agency.

H And R Block Stimulus Check Issues

If you fall within the Adjusted Gross Income thresholds shown below and have a Social Security number, you are eligible for each economic impact payment. Those who do not qualify for payments include non-resident aliens, dependents, and estates/trusts.

The amount of payment or credit you qualify for depends on your Adjusted gross income and the number of qualified children with a Social Security Number or Adoption Tax Identification Number you can claim.

For 2020, youll qualify for up to $1,800 in credits for yourself and qualified dependents can increase the amount youre eligible to get by up to $1,100 per qualified dependent . Unfortunately, adult dependents didnt qualify for the first and second stimulus payments.

For 2021, youll qualify for $1,400 in advance credits for yourself and qualified dependents will increase the taxpayers EIP by $1,400 so far. However, adult dependents do qualify the taxpayer to receive additional amounts on the third check.

If You’re Getting A Tax Refund

No matter how you file, you can choose to receive your refund in several ways:

    • Direct deposit to a bank account.

    • Existing H& R Emerald Cardholders can load refunds onto their cards.

    • Loaded onto an Amazon gift card .

    • Spruce mobile banking.

    • Apply the refund to next years taxes.

    • Direct the IRS to buy U.S. Savings Bonds with your refund.

You have the option of paying for the software out of your refund, but theres a $39 charge to do so.

What If I Get A ‘not Available’ Message

The IRS says anyone who receives this status message either isn’t eligible for a second stimulus check or is but won’t be getting theirs right now.

However, several Twitter users who filed their taxes using TurboTax have told me this week that after initially seeing a “not available” status message, their stimulus payment was later deposited into their bank account. TurboTax tweeted on January 8 that users will get an email when their stimulus deposit is on the way.

Most importantly, anyone who qualifies for a first or second stimulus payment and doesn’t get it by direct deposit or in the mail will be able to claim the money on their 2020 tax return. It will be labeled a “recovery rebate credit” on Form 1040 and used to offset your 2020 tax bill. If your tax bill is reduced to $0, you’ll get the remaining money back as a refund.

Stimulus Payment Deposited Into Bank Account You Dont Recognize Heres What H& r Block Is Saying

Stimulus payment deposited into bank account you dont recognize? Heres what H& R Block is saying

Many H& R Block customers have been raising concerns after the Get My Payment tool on the IRS website shows that their stimulus payment was deposited into a bank account they dont recognize.

According to the company, H& R Block customers who used the Refund Transfer option for their 2019 income tax returns could see the stimulus payment sent to a temporary account, one with an account number the customer does not recognize.

The company says it has addressed the problem and the check will be directed to the method of payment the customer chose.

H& R Block sent out a series of tweets explaining the situation:

H& R Block understands stimulus checks are vitally important for millions of Americans. The IRS determines where second stimulus payments were sent, and in some cases, money was sent to a different account than the first stimulus payment last spring.

We processed millions of stimulus payments to customers bank accounts and onto our Emerald Prepaid Mastercard® yesterday, and all direct deposits are on their way.

If the IRS Get My Payment website displays an account number a customer doesnt recognize, H& R Block is ready to help with additional information at 800-HRBLOCK and 1-866-353-1266 for Emerald Card.
