I Didn’t Get My Stimulus Money

How Your Return Can Help With A $1400 Stimulus Check

What to do if you have not received your stimulus check

Since March, the government has been deploying new batches of stimulus checks weekly.

Each of those rounds has included payments to people that were prompted by the IRS processing their 2020 tax returns.

That goes for people who do not typically file tax returns, but did so this year in order to get their $1,400 checks. Once those forms were processed, the IRS sent their payments.

In addition, people who already received their third stimulus check, and who are due more money after the IRS completed their latest return, received “plus-up” payments from the agency.

That could happen if their financial circumstances changed since their 2019 return, such as their income declining last year.

Not everyone needs to file a federal return in order to get their stimulus checks. If you receive federal benefits and do not typically file, you should get your payment automatically. However, you may want to file a return in order to submit information on eligible dependents.

In addition, if you used the IRS online non-filer tool last year, you should not have to resubmit your information.

The non-filer tool has not been reopened this year. Instead, the IRS has urged people who it does not already have on record to file tax returns, which can help the agency evaluate whether or not you may be eligible for other tax credits.

Your Bank Account Number

When you file your taxes, make sure you use your current banking information if you would like your payment through direct deposit.

Typically, you’ll receive this payment using the refund option you select on your tax return. If you received an advanced refund through your tax service provider or paid your tax preparation fees using your refund, you’ll receive your payment by check in the mail.

If I Am The Custodial Parent And Ive Neverreceivedtanf Or Medicaid For My Child Will I Receive Any Money From A Tax Return Intercepted By The Federal Government From The Noncustodial Parent On My Case

  • Maybe. If the noncustodial parent owes you child support arrears and the total arrears onall ofthe noncustodial parents cases meets the threshold amounts indicated in Questions #2, then you should be entitled to receive monies intercepted from the noncustodial parents tax return. The amount of the money you receive will depend on a number of factors, including the amount of the tax return intercepted, the amounts owed to you in your case, and the number of other child support cases in which the noncustodial parent owes child support arrears. You must also have a full-service case open with the Child Support Division to be entitled to receive any monies from an intercepted federal tax return.

Make Sure Youre Not Over The Income Limits & That You Meet Other Qualifications

Kevin Brady applaud U.S. President Donald Trump during a bill signing ceremony for H.R. 748, the CARES Act in the Oval Office of the White House on March 27, 2020 in Washington, DC.

It might be possible that you simply didnt qualify for a stimulus check. You have to fall under certain income limits to qualify for a COVID-19 stimulus check. Here are those limits, according to the IRS:

U.S. citizens and U.S. resident aliens will receive the Economic Impact Payment of $1,200 for individual or head of household filers, and $2,400 for married filing jointly if they are not a dependent of another taxpayer and have a work eligible Social Security number with adjusted gross income up to:

$75,000 for individuals if their filing status was single or married filing separately $112,500 for head of household filers and $150,000 for married couples filing joint returns

Taxpayers will receive a reduced payment if their AGI is between:

$75,000 and $99,000 if their filing status was single or married filing separately 112,500 and $136,500 for head of household $150,000 and $198,000 if their filing status was married filing jointly

The amount of the reduced payment will be based upon the taxpayers specific adjusted gross income.

Americans Who Didnt Receive Any Stimulus Checks At All

Didn

Many Americans out there just havent received any of their promised stimulus checks. If thats you, you should jump at the opportunity to claim your credit.

A number of circumstances can cause these delays for you: Perhaps youve moved and the IRS doesnt have your new address on file. Maybe the IRS did have the correct address or bank account information, but it never hit your checking account or perhaps got lost in the mail. All of these would be instances when you should apply to reconcile your payment on your tax return.

As always, its good practice to go back through your records and find any documents from the IRS showing your designated stimulus amount, if you have them. Then, look back through your deposit statements around the time when both stimulus checks mightve been cashed or deposited .

The IRS Get My Payment tool will be helpful for tracking both of those checks statuses. That portal should also give you information showing the date of payment and the method , according to the IRS.

If all of your research validates these suspicions, its time to claim your Recovery Rebate Credit.

Youre A Member Of A Mixed

Under the CARES Act, U.S. adults with a Social Security number werent eligible for a stimulus check if they were in a mixed-status household, meaning one partner was undocumented or didnt have an SSN. A recent law change, however, scraps that rule. Now, individuals would be able to receive both payments retroactively meaning both the first and second stimulus payment for the taxpayers and qualifying children of the family who have work-eligible SSNs.

Youll want to reconcile that first amount with your Recovery Rebate Credit, if you didnt receive it.

How Should Ssdi And Ssi Recipients Have Gotten Their Stimulus Checks

SSDI and SSI recipients who receive their monthly benefit payments by Direct Express debit card should have received their stimulus payments by Direct Express. The IRS says most disability recipients should have received their third payments by Direct Express. Others might have received a direct deposit , a paper check, or a prepaid Visa debit card. The debit cards, issued by MetaBank, were called Economic Impact Payment cards.

Why Havent I Gotten My Money Yet

Here are some common reasons why you may not have gotten your payment yet:

  • The IRS does not have your current address on file

  • The IRS does not have current banking/direct deposit information

  • The IRS does not know you or your dependents qualify because they have no records for you

  • Someone else claimed you or your children as a dependent

  • You have a designated payee

How To Make Sure You Receive Your Credits As Soon As Possible

What if I never got my first $1,200 stimulus check?

The Recovery Rebate Credit worksheet requires that you know the specific amounts you were supposed to receive, according to the IRS. By doing the investigation and calculation work in advance, youll most likely end up getting your stimulus check and tax refund faster.

To get it correct, that cannot be overemphasized, Steber says. These Recovery Rebate Credits are real cash, and they sent out hundreds of millions in the two tranches. If you did in fact receive it and forget about it, it could add weeks to your tax return timeline.

Your tax refund will be passed more quickly and safely if you electronically file and provide a direct deposit, the IRS says.

Typically, the IRS is good at sending out refunds within a couple of weeks within electronically filing, Bronnenkant says.

Not included in 2020s Recovery Rebate Credit is a third stimulus payment worth $1,400 or more, distributed to Americans beginning in mid-March after President Joe Biden signed the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan. Taxpayers will most likely have to wait until 2021 to claim those missing relief payments, Jaeger says.

Who Will Get A California Stimulus Check

You’re eligible to receive a California stimulus check payment if you:

  • Filed a 2020 California income tax return by October 15, 2021
  • Reported an adjusted gross income on your 2020 California tax return of $250,000 or less if you filed as a single person or married person filing a separate tax return, or $500,000 or less for anyone else
  • Weren’t claimed as a dependent on anyone else’s 2020 tax return
  • Were a California resident for at least six months in 2020 and
  • Are a California resident on the date your payment is issued.

The California Franchise Tax Board has a handy online tool that lets you check your eligibility and get an estimate of your stimulus payment amount.

You Used A Tax Preparer Last Year

Back in April, an estimated 21 million people who used tax prep services like TurboTax and H& R Block found themselves unable to access stimulus money because of the way those systems processed their tax refunds. Reports on social media are now indicating the same issue is happening with the second stimulus check.

Temporary bank accounts are likely to blame. Basically, when you filed your taxes, your refund first went to a short-term account created by the tax preparation company to have its fees taken out before the refund was passed on to you. But the IRS mistakenly tried to send your stimulus to the temporary account.

What to do: Wait and see. H& R Block tweeted Monday that it has “sent these payments on to the method you chose for Refund Transfer: direct deposit, check or Emerald Card,” adding that “the money should be there by the end of the day.” TurboTax said that “customers affected by the IRS error” should see deposits starting Friday, adding that it’s “been working tirelessly with the Treasury and IRS to get stimulus payments to our customers.”

My Stimulus Payment Was Too High

Some individuals whose income increased too much in 2019 were not eligible for a full stimulus payment, but they got one anyway since the IRS based the payment on their 2018 taxes. Those individuals will not have to pay back the payment.

In other cases, families were paid an extra $500 or $600 for children who were 17 or older . This could happen if the IRS took the number of children who qualified for the child tax credit in 2018 without updating children’s ages for 2019. But in other cases, it looks like the IRS took the number of dependents from a family’s 2018 tax return, without regard to their age. The IRS has said that those who received such overpayments will not have to pay them back.

Not everyone needs to file a tax return to get a stimulus check, but some people do. You can find out if you need to file a tax return here.

Some categories of people dont need to file tax returns to get their checks. The IRS says:

You are not required to file a tax return and will automatically receive a $1,200 Payment if you received Social Security retirement, SSDI, survivors benefits, SSI, Railroad Retirement benefits, or VA Compensation and Pension benefits in 2019. You do not need to contact the IRS, Social Security Administration , the Railroad Retirement Board or Veterans Affairs. The IRS will use the information from your 2019 benefits to generate a Payment to you if you did not file tax returns in 2018 or 2019. You will receive your Payment as a direct deposit or by mail, just as you would normally receive your federal benefits.

But what if you arent one of the people above and you didnt file a federal tax return for 2018 or 2019? You have to provide basic information to the IRS to receive your Payment. The IRS urges you to take one of the following actions as soon as you can, the IRS says of those people.

You can use the non-filers payment tool to enter information the IRS needs here. If the IRS doesnt get your information, you wont get a check.

How Do I Get It

  • The stimulus payments will be processed by the IRS.
  • If you have already filed a 2019 tax return, you will get the stimulus payment automatically. You will receive it in the same form as your tax refund. If you requested direct deposit, then the stimulus will be direct deposited. If you requested a paper check, then the stimulus will be mailed to the same address on your 2019 tax return.
  • If you entered your information into the IRS non-filer portal earlier in 2020, you will get the stimulus payment automatically. You do not have to do anything.
  • If you receive one of the following benefits, you will get the stimulus payment automatically. You do not have to do anything.
  • Social Security
  • Veterans Affairs
  • Railroad Retirement
  • Note: Instead of a check, some people will get a debit card mailed to them in a white envelope. The envelope has the U.S. Department of the Treasury seal on it.
  • Stimulus Checks Arent Distributed At The Same Time

Stimulus checks arent distributed all at once. That means your neighbor, cousin or sister may get a stimulus check before you. If you have a bank account on file with the IRS, youre likely to get your stimulus check faster through direct deposit. However, if you dont, then it may take longer to get a paper stimulus check or debit card. Like the first and second stimulus checks, the third stimulus check will be sent in batches over time. If you get Social Security benefits, you also may not have received a stimulus check yet. Why? Until this week, the U.S. Social Security Administration didnt share contact information for 30 million Social Security recipients with the IRS, which has delayed the disbursement of their stimulus checks.

    Eligibility For A ‘plus

You can estimate how much money the IRS owes your household for the third stimulus check. Just make sure to triple-check that you meet the qualifications, including the income limits.

Because of the overlap with tax season 2020, many people may receive some, but not all, of their allotted amount. If your income changed in 2020, in some cases, the IRS may owe you more money than you received if the income figure used to calculate your payment from your tax returns in 2018 or 2019 is less in 2020. Likewise, if you now have a new dependent, such as a new baby, you may be owed more money.

The IRS is automatically sending “plus-up payments” to make up the difference. If you don’t get one, you may need to claim the missing money another way later in 2021 or even in 2022, since tax season is officially over now.

What to do if you didn’t get a stimulus check

If you filed your 2020 income tax return and entered that you did not get your second stimulus check, you may have to amend your income tax return.

    • The IRS has announced that they will begin accepting and processing 2020 individual tax returns on February 12, 2021.

If your return gets rejected, you’ll be able to add the stimulus payment and submit the corrected return.

    If your return gets accepted:

    • The IRS may correct your return and remove the stimulus payment in which case you don’t have to amend your return.
    • If the IRS does not correct your return to remove the stimulus payment, you’ll have to amend your income tax return.
    • NOTE: At this time, you’re not able to amend a 2020 income tax return. Check the forms availability to see the date you’ll be able to amend.

To get a partial stimulus payment, you’d need to make between $112,500 and $120,000. But to get the full amount, you’d need to make less than $112,500 if you’re the head of household.

How Much Were The Stimulus Checks

When Will California Stimulus Payments Be Sent

Direct deposit payments to people who previously received GSS direct deposit payments began on October 7, 2022. The FTB sent those payments through October 25. For people who didn’t previously receive a GSS payment by direct deposit, but who otherwise qualify for direct deposit stimulus payments now, payments began again on October 28 and ran through November 14.

According to the FTB, direct deposit payments typically show up in your bank account within three to five business days from the issue date. However, that estimate may vary on a bank-by-bank basis.

It will take longer to send the debit cards. The FTB’s plan is to send cards in batches, generally depending on whether you previously received a GSS and your last name. According to the schedule, eligible people who previously received a GSS payment via debit card with a last name beginning with A to E were issued a California stimulus check debit card between October 24 and November 5, 2022. If you’re last name begins with a letter from F to M, your card was issued between November 6 and 19. Previous GSS debit card recipients with last names beginning with N to V will be issued a stimulus debit card between November 20 and December 3, while people with last names starting with W to Z will have to wait until December 4 to 10.
