What If My Mailing Address Changed Since I Received My Previous Stimulus Checks How Will I Get My Third Stimulus Check

Third Stimulus Checks: When and How Will You Get $1,400?

If you are expecting to receive your third stimulus check by mail, it will be mailed to the last address you filed with the IRS. If your address has changed since then, there are different options you can take to make sure your stimulus check gets to you:

Option 1: File your 2020 federal tax return to update your address. If you havent filed your 2020 tax return yet, this is an easy way to update your address. File a tax return with your current address and your payment will be sent through the mail once the IRS receives your updated address.

Option 2: Provide your banking information in the IRS Get My Payment tool. If the post office was unable to deliver your stimulus check, it will be returned to the IRS. Two to three weeks after the payment has been issued, Get My Payment will display the message Need More Information. You will have the option to have your payment reissued as a direct deposit by providing your banking information.

If you dont provide your banking information, the IRS will mail your payment once your address is updated.

Option 3: Notify the IRS that your address has changed by telephone, an IRS form, or a written statement. It can take 4-6 weeks for the IRS to process your request.

Your Refund Went To A Temporary Account Set Up By A Tax Preparer Like H& R Block

When you use tax preparers like TurboTax, sometimes they set up a temporary account into which your tax refund is deposited first. They take out their fees and then transfer the remaining refund money to you.

If you used a tax preprepar, the IRS may only have the tax preparers temporary account on file for you and may send your check there. If this happens, the check could get bounced back, and then the IRS will have to send a paper check, which adds time.

The good news is that tax preparers are aware of this issue, and some like TurboTax are on the lookout and forwarding the stimulus check money if they have the correct banking info for customers.

When Can Social Security Recipients Expect The Stimulus Check

There has been a delay getting the third payments to around 30 million people who receive benefits from Social Security, Supplemental Security Income, the Railroad Retirement Board and Veterans Affairs, because the Social Security Administration did not send the IRS the necessary paperwork.

But the IRS should have received the information it needed to send the payments last Thursday, and announced Tuesday that many Social Security beneficiaries and many others who don’t normally file taxes will start getting their payments by April 7.

Reasons Why You May Not Have Received 3rd Stimulus Payment

FRISCO, Texas – Keep checking your bank account for that third round of COVID-19 stimulus.

More than 90 million federal stimulus checks were direct deposited on Wednesday, March 17.

However, that still leaves nearly 70 million Americans, who qualify for a stimulus check, still waiting for their $1,400 per person payment.

For the third time in the past year, the IRS is sending millions of Americans a stimulus check.

The IRS has resolved many of the problem that plagued the first two rounds of stimulus payment but experts say there will still be some issues.

“I think there will be fewer problems but it will also take longer for some of the problems to be resolved,” said Bob Probasco, the Tax Director at Texas A& M University Law School. “Any program this big is going to have some error rate and I expect that to occur again.”

If you haven’t received your stimulus payment yet, here are five possible reasons why:

1. YOU DIDN’T FILE TAXES IN 2019 OR 2020

Without a recent tax return, the IRS will have no record whether you’re eligible. For the first stimulus check that went out last year, the IRS set up a way online non-filers could enter their information and bank account number online. So far, the IRS has not provided an online portal this time. You can check the status of your payment by using the “Get My Payment” tool on the IRS website but it does not give users the opportunity to provide the IRS with missing information.

2. YOU DON’T QUALIFY THIS TIME

I Received A Second Payment But My Spouse Didn’t

Didnt Get Your Stimulus Check? This Could Be The Reason

There have been cases where a couple submit their tax returns as “married filing jointly,” and both spouses are eligible for a $1,400 stimulus check, but one spouse received a payment and the other did not . This is an error on the IRS’s part. Unfortunately, the spouse who didn’t receive a check will have to claim a Recovery Rebate Credit on his or her 2020 tax return. See below for instructions on claiming the rebate on your tax return.

My Third Stimulus Payment Was Too Low

Many individuals and families will find that their third stimulus checks are lower than they thought. That could be because people who make over a certain amount have part of the $1,400 payment taken away. For example, single people who make over $75,000 in adjusted gross income will have their second stimulus checks reduced by 28% of the income over $75,000. Married people filing jointly and heads of household will have their payments reduced by a similar amount.

The third stimulus payment is technically based on your 2021 income, but the IRS is using your 2020 tax return to estimate it. If your income goes down in 2021, making you eligible for a payment, or a higher payment, you’ll be able to file a tax return for your 2021 taxes and you’ll receive the stimulus money you didn’t getâit’s called a recovery rebate credit.

Who Qualifies For The Third Stimulus Payments

Generally, if youâre a U.S. citizen and not a dependent of another taxpayer, you qualify for the full third stimulus payment. In addition, your adjusted gross income canât exceed:

  • $150,000 for married filing jointly
  • $112,500 for heads of household
  • $75,000 for single filers

A partial payment may be available if your income exceeds the thresholds. However, you will not receive any payment if your AGI is at least:

  • $160,000 for married filing jointly
  • $120,000 for heads of household
  • $80,000 for single filers

The full amount of the third stimulus payment is $1,400 per person and an additional $1,400 for each qualifying dependent.

How The Treasury Offset Program Works

Heres how the Treasury Offset Program works:

  • The TOP will check if your name and taxpayer information are in its delinquent debtor database.
  • If there is a match, TOP will notify you that it is deducting the amount you owe from your tax refund.
  • TOP will send the outstanding amount to the government agency to which you owed the money.
  • If you owe more money than the payment you were going to receive, then TOP will send the entire amount to the other government agency. If you owe less, TOP will send the agency the amount you owed, and then send you the remaining balance.

Heres an example: you were going to receive a $1,500 federal tax refund. But you are delinquent on a student loan and have $1,000 outstanding. TOP will deduct $1,000 from your tax refund and send it to the correct government agency. It will also send you a notice of its action, along with the remaining $500 that was due to you as a tax refund.

Who Should Apply For A Recovery Rebate Credit

Your Money: Where’s my third stimulus check?

The IRS has prepared a special worksheet for Americans who think they might be eligible for a Recovery Rebate Credit on their 2020 tax return. Youll have to fill that out when claiming your credit. But there are a few groups of people who might want to pay close attention in particular.

The 2020 tax return is the great corrector for all changes, issues or lost money that you didnt receive with your stimulus check, says Mark Steber, senior vice president and chief tax officer at Jackson Hewitt. You may be due $1,200, $1,800 or $2,400. The skys the limit if youve got three children and are married and havent gotten your payment.

Why You May Not Have Gotten All Your Stimmy Money

The third-round stimulus payments, authorized by the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 and signed into law on March 11, 2021, were sent from March through December last year. Round 3 of the so-called stimmies provided a maximum credit of $1,400 per person, including all qualifying dependents claimed on a tax return.

A married couple with two qualifying dependents, for example, are eligible to receive a maximum credit of $5,600, depending on income limits. And if you brought a baby into the world last year, youll be able to file for up to $1,400 that youre owed for your new family member if you claim the child as a dependent.

The size of the credit, however, gets reduced for single filers with adjusted gross income of more than $75,000 and for married couples filing jointly with earnings of more than $150,000. For heads of household, the credit is reduced between $120,000 and $112,500.

The credit disappears entirely for individuals with AGI above $80,000 and for married couples filing jointly who earn more than $160,000. Heads of household with incomes of more than $120,000 also dont get the stimulus check. Most eligible Americans have already received the payments, according to the IRS.

What To Know About Adding Your Direct Deposit Details

How Do You Get A Stimulus Check If You Didn

You can’t use the Get My Payment tool to sign up for a new account or correct details about your payment. Even if the IRS is unable to deliver your payment to a bank account and the money is returned to the government, you won’t be able to correct the details online — the IRS says it will send the money again by mail.

The extended tax deadline was May 17. With the agency’s delay in processing tax returns, trying to register for a new direct deposit account with your 2020 tax return won’t get you into the system quickly enough. However, if you haven’t submitted your taxes yet, signing up for a new direct deposit account could still get you IRS money faster in the future, such as tax refunds or the upcoming child tax credit.

The card has the Visa name on the front and the issuing bank, MetaBank, N.A. on the back. Information included with the card will explain that this is an Economic Impact Payment. The card will come with instructions on how to securely activate and use the card. It is important to note that none of the EIP cards issued for any of the three rounds is reloadable recipients will receive a separate card and will not be able to reload funds onto an existing card.

How Much Is The Third Stimulus Check

If you are eligible, you could get up to $1,400 in stimulus payments for each taxpayer in your family plus an additional $1,400 per dependent. That means that a family of four with two children could receive up to $5,600.

Remember, just because you are eligible, does not mean you are eligible for the full $1,400.

You Didnt File A 2019 Or 2020 Tax Return

Generally, the IRS will look at your 2019 or 2020 tax return to see if youre eligible for a third stimulus check and, if so, to determine the amount of your check. If you didnt file a 2019 or 2020 return , then the IRS is stuck. It doesnt have the information it needs to send you a payment readily available.

For some people, the IRS got the necessary information from another federal agency that is paying you benefits . After it got the information, the IRS was able to start sending payments to those beneficiaries but waiting to get the data caused a delay. For example, the IRS just recently started sending payments to millions of federal beneficiaries.

If the IRS isnt able to get the information needed to process your payment , then youll have to claim the amount youre entitled to as a Recovery Rebate credit on your 2021 tax return. But theres an easy way to avoid this simply file a 2020 tax return, even if you dont have to.

Theres still plenty of time to file a 2020 return. The IRS pushed back this years return filing deadline from April 15 to May 17, 2021, so you have an additional month to get your 2020 return to the IRS. The tax agency has until the end of the year to send out third-round stimulus payments, so you can still get a check if you havent filed yet it will just take longer for you to get it.

What To Do About A Missing Or Stolen Eip Debit Card

At least 5 million people will receive their third stimulus check on a prepaid debit card called the Economic Impact Payment Card, instead of a paper check. For the third payment, the EIP card arrives in a white envelope sent from “Economic Impact Payment Card.” The letter will have a US Department of the Treasury seal.

The card has the Visa name on the front and the issuing bank, MetaBank®, N.A., on the back. Information included with the EIP Card explains that this is your Economic Impact Payment. If you receive an EIP Card, visit EIPcard.com for more information.

If you’ve misplaced or thrown away your card, the EIP card service has an FAQ on what to do if your card is lost or stolen. You can also call 800-240-8100 to request a replacement. It’s free, according to a spokesperson for the Treasury Department. To request a new card, press option 2 when prompted.

However, the EIP card website says, “Your Card will be deactivated to prevent anyone from using it and a new replacement Card will be ordered. Fees may apply.” We recommend calling the above number for a lost or stolen card and speaking to a representative. If you may have lost or thrown away a paper check, read the mail fraud section below.
