What if I never got my first $1,200 stimulus check?

The third round of stimulus payments is worth up to $1,400 per person if your adjusted gross income is $75,000 or less as a single filer, or $160,000 or less as a joint filer. Families are entitled to $1,400 per dependent for dependents of any age.

Before claiming the funds, make sure they weren’t sent to you already. You can confirm the amount of the third payment and whether it was sent to you by logging into your IRS online account or the Get My Payment app. You can also refer to a letter sent to you by the IRS, known as Notice 1444-C, which will tell you how much is owed to you.

If you lost your stimulus check or suspect it was stolen, you can request the IRS to trace your payment and get the amount automatically reimbursed to you as a tax refund. If you’re filing your 2021 tax return before your trace is complete, do not include the payment amount on the Recovery Rebate Credit Worksheet, the IRS says.

Otherwise, you’ll need to complete the Recovery Rebate Tax Credit worksheet and submit it as part of your 2021 tax return. The worksheet will help you calculate how much you can claim. Then, claim it on line 30 in Form 1040 or Form 1040-SR of your 2021 tax return.

Tax software will also guide you through this process and automatically add all the information to your tax return.

And remember, you can file your tax return for free if your income is $73,000 or less, using the IRS Free File Program.

What To Do About A Missing Or Stolen Eip Debit Card

At least 5 million people will receive their third stimulus check on a prepaid debit card called the Economic Impact Payment Card, instead of a paper check. For the third payment, the EIP card arrives in a white envelope sent from “Economic Impact Payment Card.” The letter will have a US Department of the Treasury seal.

The card has the Visa name on the front and the issuing bank, MetaBank®, N.A., on the back. Information included with the EIP Card explains that this is your Economic Impact Payment. If you receive an EIP Card, visit EIPcard.com for more information.

If you’ve misplaced or thrown away your card, the EIP card service has an FAQ on what to do if your card is lost or stolen. You can also call 800-240-8100 to request a replacement. It’s free, according to a spokesperson for the Treasury Department. To request a new card, press option 2 when prompted.

However, the EIP card website says, “Your Card will be deactivated to prevent anyone from using it and a new replacement Card will be ordered. Fees may apply.” We recommend calling the above number for a lost or stolen card and speaking to a representative. I Used The 2020 Irs Non

Most likely, the IRS wasnt able to process your 2019 tax return or the information you submitted to the IRS Non-filer tool in time to issue your second stimulus check.

All second stimulus checks were issued by January 15, 2021. If you didnt get a second stimulus check by then , you can claim your second stimulus check as the Recovery Rebate Tax Credit on your 2020 tax return or use GetCTC.org if you dont have a filing requirement.

Fill Out Income And Personal Identification Information

STEP 2 E-file your tax forms, requests both required and optional information.

  • Personal verification: The form asks for your 2019 Adjusted Gross Income. If you did NOT file taxes last year, enter 0 in the box. Ignore part B which asks for last years self-selected signature PIN.

You will need to monitor the payment portal if you havenât received your check and suspect itâs due to a change of addressâyou wonât be contacted by the IRS to update your information.

If you already filed your 2019 taxes and are ineligible because you made too much on them, but now are unemployed, youll probably reeling at the idea of not receiving aid in your time of need. Its frustrating, but there is a provision in the stimulus bill that will ensure you get a stimulus checkit just wont be immediate.

If your income suddenly drops this year due to unemployment, or much lower hours or gigs than you worked the year prior, youll be able to claim the stimulus on your 2020 tax return. That means youll have to wait until next year to receive it.

Thats not necessarily helpful for individuals who need cash now. If you need immediate financial assistance, some banks are offering financial assistance to customers experiencing financial hardship due to COVID-19, including payment arrangement programs, mortgage relief and more. Additionally, the Department of Education is suspending federal student loan payments, without interest, until the end of September.

These relief systems wont put money in your pocket now. But they could keep you afloat in the meantime while you search for a work from home job or gig, since most of the country is ordered to shelter in place right now, or successfully file for unemployment.

How To Claim The Recovery Rebate Credit

If you did not receive your first or second stimulus payment, or if it was for the wrong amount, you’ll need to file a tax return for the 2020 tax year . You’ll file Form 1040 or Form 1040-SR . You’ll need your Notice 1444, Your Economic Impact Payment from the IRS when you file. You should have gotten your first Notice 1444 sometime last spring or summer, and you should have gotten your second one in February 2021. You’ll need the amount of the payment in the letter when you file your tax return in 2021.

If you don’t receive your third stimulus payment, or if it was for the wrong amount, you’ll need to file a tax return for the 2021 tax year . You’ll file Form 1040 or Form 1040-SR . You’ll need your Notice 1444, Your Economic Impact Payment from the IRS when you file. You’ll need the amount of the payment in the letter when you file your tax return in 2021.

You can take the Recovery Rebate Credit for any rebate amount that is more than the economic impact payment that you received by completing line 30 of Form 1040 or Form 1040-SR. The instructions for Form 1040 and Form 1040-SR include a worksheet you can use to calculate the amount of the credit you are eligible for.

    The IRS website has been uploading data for your third stimulus payment into a tool on its website called Get My Payment. If your information has been updated, you’ll be able to see the date you can expect to receive your stimulus payment, or the date it was deposited or mailed. You should also be able to see whether your money was direct deposited or whether you’ll be receiving the payment by mail.

    Many people are seeing a message that says either the IRS doesn’t have enough information yet or you aren’t eligible for the payment. This message doesn’t necessarily mean you aren’t eligible for the payment. This information may be updated this coming weekend.

    • Adults whose adjusted gross income is less than $75,000/year will get $1,400 for each adult, plus $1,400 for each dependent no matter how old they are. This applies to heads of households who make less than $112,500, as well.
    • The IRS will use income information from your 2020 tax return if they received that return before sending your money. Otherwise they will use information from your 2019 tax return.
    • If the IRS sends your payment based on a 2019 return and then your 2020 return says you qualify for more , they will send an additional payment to make up for the difference. To get the additional payment, you must file the 2020 tax return by 90 days from the filing deadline or September 1, 2021, whichever is earlier.

    3) Wait

    To keep people from delaying them with unnecessary requests, the IRS has requested that a waiting period be observed before a payment trace is requested.

    If you receive Social Security or Railroad Retirement Benefits and did not file a tax return in 2019, you will not have to file a return in order to receive your paymentâthe IRS has your information already. If you donât receive those benefits and did not file a tax return for 2019, you may need to file one to confirm your eligibility. Check your status in the Get My Payment portal for instructions.
