Who Should Apply For A Recovery Rebate Credit

What to do if you have not received your stimulus check

The IRS has prepared a special worksheet for Americans who think they might be eligible for a Recovery Rebate Credit on their 2020 tax return. Youll have to fill that out when claiming your credit. But there are a few groups of people who might want to pay close attention in particular.

The 2020 tax return is the great corrector for all changes, issues or lost money that you didnt receive with your stimulus check, says Mark Steber, senior vice president and chief tax officer at Jackson Hewitt. You may be due $1,200, $1,800 or $2,400. The skys the limit if youve got three children and are married and havent gotten your payment.

What Does Payment Status Unavailable Mean

  • The IRS has not processed your 2019 tax return
  • The application doesnt have your bank data and the IRS is working to add it
  • You dont usually file a tax return
  • You used the Non-Filers section of the website and your entry hasnt been processed yet
  • You receive SSI or VA benefits and dont file a tax return
  • Youre not eligible for a payment

The information on the Get My Payment portal is updated once per day, overnight so there is no need to check more often than that.

How Can You Correct Mistakes

The IRS sends out Notice 1444 by mail within 15 days of making a direct deposit or sending a paper check. That letter will tell you the amount of your stimulus payment and how it was made. The letter also provides instructions on fixing issues with your payment.

Donât Respond to Telephone Calls or Texts About Your Stimulus Check

The IRS will not call, text, or email you about your stimulus payment. The Federal Trade Commission is warning that thieves are posing as government employees to prey on stimulus payment recipients. These scammers may ask for your personal information or threaten you that if you donât send the money back in the form of money transfers or gift cards, youâll lose your driversâ license. Ignore these communications.

Your Stimulus Checks Arent Taxable

Itâs essential to understand that a stimulus payment is not taxable. The IRS has issued guidance stating that you do not need to include the amount in your gross income or pay taxes on the money.

Still, many people donât entirely grasp how stimulus payments affect their taxes.

âThe part that I think most do not necessarily understand is that the payment is technically an advance refundable tax credit,â says Hawkins.

The stimulus payments were advance tax credits because the IRS gave you money in advance of filing your tax return. The recovery rebate credit is considered a refundable credit, meaning it can reduce the amount of taxes you owe or generate a refund to you.

One final important point: Typically, if you receive more money from the IRS than youâre entitled to, you must repay the excess amount. But the recovery rebate credit works differently. If you received a stimulus payment based on your previous tax information but no longer qualify, based on your current tax return, you donât have to pay any stimulus money back.

What About People With Itins

I Have Not Received My Stimulus Check

You still need a work-authorizing Social Security Number to be eligible for this stimulus. However, there are important changes since the first round of stimulus checks.

  • In the first stimulus rollout, any non-SSN holder on a joint return made everyone on that return ineligible. Big change: The new rounds of stimulus has corrected this problem. If you filed a joint return with a non-SSN holder, you are still eligible for the stimulus. See the below hypotheticals.
  • Situation: A single tax filer has an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number but no Social Security number .
  • This person is ineligible for the stimulus.
  • Situation: A spouse has a Social Security number and files married filing jointly on a tax return with a spouse who has an ITIN.
  • The SSN holder is now eligible to get a payment. If they have children on the tax return that have SSNs, these children will be eligible for the payment for each qualifying child.
  • Situation: Two ITIN holders file a joint return and claim young children who have SSNs.
  • The children who have SSNs are eligible for the payment.

Atm Check Cashing Without An Id

Automated teller machines are generally a blessing because they allow you to deposit your cash. Nevertheless, there are some banks that also let you cash them, which makes things even better.

For instance, if you are someone with a checking account or a prepaid debit card at Regions Bank, you can insert your check into the ATM and cash it. In an instant, you can receive up to $3,000 from the check. If there is any remaining amount, though, you have to deposit it into the prepaid or checking account.

Luckily, no ID is required to do this, so if you dont have any, this can be a very useful way to cash your check. You just need to ensure you have your debit card with you because itll be necessary.

Who Isnt Eligible For The Recovery Rebate Credit

How you can get your stimulus money if you never received a check or payment

If you received full stimulus payments, you arenât eligible for any more cash. And you canât take the credit if someone else can claim you as a dependent.

Additionally, only U.S. citizens or âresident aliensâ qualify for the recovery rebate credit. If you are a ânonresident alienââ someone who has not passed the green card testâyou do not qualify for the credit.

You also are not eligible if you donât have a Social Security number. But if youâre married and your spouse has an SSN, there are certain instances where you might still qualify for the credit even if youâre not in the Social Security system.

My Stimulus Payment Went To The Wrong Bank Account

If the Get My Payment tool tells you your check will be direct-deposited, it will also provide the last four digits of the number of the bank account into which your stimulus payment will be deposited. For the initial checks, some individuals saw that their deposit was going to an old bank account, or they even saw bank account numbers that they didn’t recognize. Here’s what to do:

    • If the tool says that your payment was deposited into your bank account but you haven’t seen it yet, your bank may still be processing it.
    • You won’t necessarily get the third check direct deposited, even if the first or second one was direct deposited.
    • If your third stimulus payment is sent to a closed bank account, the bank is required to transfer the money back to the IRS. The IRS will not redeposit it to you or mail you a paper check. Instead, you will have to file your 2021 tax return to claim your “Recovery Rebate Credit.” See below for instructions on claiming the rebate on your tax return.
    • If H& R Block submitted your last tax return and you signed up for a “refund transfer,” the IRS might deposit your stimulus payment with H& R Block . H& R Block should transfer the money to your bank account within 24 hours.
    • Those who submitted their last tax return with Turbo Tax should receive their payments in the same bank accounts through which they received their tax refunds.

    • Reported an adjusted gross income on your 2020 California tax return of $250,000 or less if you filed as a single person or married person filing a separate tax return, or $500,000 or less for anyone else

    • Were a California resident for at least six months in 2020 and

    Track Your Payment Status

The IRS has a handy service called the Get My Payment tool, which lets you check where along the process your payment is.

But beware, this tool works only should you be missing your third stimulus check.

It will indicate when the payment was processed and in what form you’ll receive it: check, direct deposit, or by a debit card.

Also if there’s a problem with your information, the tool will ask you to fill out information online or submit the missing information.

If you see a message displaying “Payment Status Not Available,” fret not! It likely means the payment is being processed.

If you’re missing the first or second payment, you need to find the IRS letters stating when the payments were released or deposited, or you can create an online profile with the IRS should you be unable to locate the letters.

What Information Will The Trace Provide Me

Have Not Received My Stimulus Check Yet

The IRS will process your claim for a missing payment in one of two ways:

    • If the check was not cashed, they will reverse your payment and notify you. If you find the original check, you must return it as soon as possible. You will need to claim the 2020 Recovery Rebate Credit on your 2020 tax return to receive credit for EIP 1 and EIP 2, and then claim the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit on your 2021 tax return for EIP 3, if eligible.
    • If the check was cashed, the Treasury Departments Bureau of the Fiscal Service will send you a claim package that includes a copy of the cashed check. Follow the instructions. The Treasury Departments Bureau of the Fiscal Service will review your claim and the signature on the canceled check before determining whether the payment can be reversed. If reversed, you will need to claim the Recovery Rebate Credit on your 2020, or 2021 return depending on what EIP payment in reference, if eligible.

What To Do About Payment Scams

Though it’s uncommon, you may believe you’ve been scammed out of your payment or had it stolen. The Federal Trade Commission has a website where you can report a stolen stimulus check. If you’re worried about theft, you can sign up for a free USPS service that will send you a picture of every piece of mail coming your way — including your stimulus payment.

I Used The 2020 Irs Non

Most likely, the IRS wasnt able to process your 2019 tax return or the information you submitted to the IRS Non-filer tool in time to issue your second stimulus check.

All second stimulus checks were issued by January 15, 2021. If you didnt get a second stimulus check by then , you can claim your second stimulus check as the Recovery Rebate Tax Credit on your 2020 tax return or use GetCTC.org if you dont have a filing requirement.

When Will I Get The Recovery Rebate Credit

You will most likely get the Recovery Rebate Credit as part of your tax refunds. If you electronically file your tax return, you will likely receive your refund within 3 weeks. If you mail your return, it can take at least 8 weeks to receive your refund.

Claiming the Recovery Rebate Credit will not delay your tax refund. However, if you dont claim the correct amount of the Recovery Rebate Credit, your refund may be delayed while the IRS corrects the error on your return. The IRS will send you a notice of any changes made to your return.

You can check on the status of your refund using the IRS Check My Refund Status tool.

Contact Your Bank Or Tax Rep

If all else fails, you can correct your personal information with your bank or tax representative and have them ensure the IRS did indeed send the payments to the correct account.

Contact your bank or tax preparer to find out if there was any attempt to get those payments sent to you through direct deposit or a prepaid direct card.

Likewise, double and triple check all information you have filled out to make sure it’s correct, and as a last case scenario, contact the IRS and United States Postal Service to ensure they too have your correct information on file.

What If I Already Filed My Taxes

An amended return may be needed to claim the credit if IRS records show no payment was issued.

For eligible people who didnt claim a recovery rebate credit on their 2021 tax return , they will need to file a Form 1040-X, Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return to claim the remaining amount of stimulus money if IRS records dont show that they were issued a payment.

This includes people who think they didnt get the full amount of their third-round Economic Impact Payment because their circumstances in 2021 were different than they were in 2020.

People trying to figure out if they should amend their original tax return can use this online tool.

If you did not receive the stimulus payment, you may be eligible to receive the Recovery Rebate Credit. If you have already filed 2020 but it is waiting to be accepted, you will have to file an amended income tax return once it is accepted.

The Recovery Rebate Credit is authorized by the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act and the COVID-related Tax Relief Act. It is a tax credit against your 2020 income tax. Generally, this credit will increase the amount of your tax refund or decrease the amount of the tax you owe.

Eligible individuals who did not receive the full amounts of both Economic Impact Payments may claim the Recovery Rebate Credit on their 2020 Form 1040 or 1040-SR. To determine whether you are an eligible individual or the amount of your Recovery Rebate Credit, complete the Recovery Rebate Credit Worksheet in the Instructions for Form 1040 and Form 1040-SR.

Generally, you are eligible to claim the Recovery Rebate Credit if you were a U.S. citizen or U.S. resident alien in 2020, cannot be claimed as a dependent of another taxpayer for tax year 2020, and have a Social Security number valid for employment that is issued before the due date of your 2020 tax return .
