Third stimulus check questions: IRS still processing payments, more payments to hit accounts

Stimulus checks are not taxable, but they still need to be reported on 2021 tax returns, which need to be filed this spring. The 2021 stimulus checks were disbursed to eligible recipients starting in March of last year. They are worth up to $1,400 per qualifying taxpayer and each of their dependents.

What Do I Do With The Stimulus Check Letter

If you are using a professional tax preparer, give them Letter 6475 along with all of your other applicable tax documents. If you’re preparing your own return, use the amount shown in Letter 6475 in the Recovery Rebate Worksheet to determine if any credit applies. Then enter that credit on Line 30 of IRS Form 40.

The Recovery Rebate Worksheet is included in the instructions for IRS Form 1040 and calculated automatically by tax preparation software.

“Having the wrong amount on your return could trigger a manual review,” according to the H& R Block website, which could delay a refund for weeks.

What If Letter 6475 Says That I Received Money But I Didn’t

First, the IRS recommends that you check your bank account records for 2021 to make sure. They particularly advise looking for deposits from the IRS in spring or early summer.

Next, check your online IRS account. The info on the IRS website will be more up to date than Letter 6475, particularly if a payment was returned. If your online account says that you received stimulus payments, but you didn’t see the money, you should contact the IRS immediately to see if a payment trace is required.

Who Is Eligible For The Third Economic Impact Payment And What Incomes Qualify

Generally, if you are a U.S. citizen or U.S. resident alien, you are eligible for the full amount of the third Economic Impact Payment if you are not a dependent of another taxpayer and have a valid Social Security number and your adjusted gross income on their tax return does not exceed:

  • $150,000 if married and filing a joint return or if filing as a qualifying widow or widower
  • $112,500 if filing as head of household or
  • $75,000 for eligible individuals using any other filing statuses, such as single filers and married people filing separate returns.

Payments will be phased out or reduced — above those AGI amounts. This means taxpayers will not receive a third payment if their AGI exceeds:

  • $160,000 if married and filing a joint return or if filing as a qualifying widow or widower
  • $120,000 if filing as head of household or
  • $80,000 for eligible individuals using other filing statuses, such as single filers and married people filing separate returns.

For example, a single person with no dependents and an AGI of $77,500 will normally get a $700 payment . A married couple with two dependents and an AGI of $155,000 will generally get a payment of $2,800 . Filers with incomes of at least $80,000 , $120,000 and $160,000 will get no payment based on the law.

How To Claim Your Missing Third Stimulus Payment On Your 2021 Tax Return

Youâll need to request any missing third stimulus payments on your 2021 tax return by claiming the Recovery Rebate Tax Credit.

This is the case if you received a partial amount or didnât previously qualify for the third stimulus payment.

Letâs say youâre single and your income for the 2020 and 2019 tax years exceeds the threshold . However, you lost your job in 2021, so your income drastically decreased. You can now claim the Recovery Rebate Tax Credit since your earnings fell below the threshold.

Families that added dependents may also be able to claim the credit.

In addition, a few lingering taxpayers who file taxes using ITINs may not have received payments for their eligible dependents who have Social Security numbers.

You need to complete the Recovery Rebate Tax Credit worksheet and submit it along with your 2021 tax return. If you use a tax software program, it should guide you through the process. Keep in mind, the IRS predicted a frustrating and slow tax season this year, so file your return as soon as possible.

Before completing the worksheet, you must know the amount of any third stimulus payments received for you, your spouse, and any dependents. The worksheet will also request your adjusted gross income for the year to determine your eligibility.

The IRS started mailing Letter 6475 to taxpayers in Januaryâthe letter confirms the total amount of the third stimulus payments received for the 2021 tax year.

Irs Gov Stimulus Refund 2021 Get My Payment 2021

According to the IRS, Economic Impact Payment letters include important information that can help you quickly and accurately file your tax return, including the total amount sent in your third stimulus payment.

This could include “plus-up” payments, the additional funds the IRS sent to people who were eligible for a larger amount based on their 2019 or 2020 tax returns, or information received from the Social Security Administration, Department of Veterans Affairs or the Railroad Retirement Board.

Even though it is not taxable income, you still need to report any stimulus money on your IRS return. In 2020, the IRS received over 10 million returns that incorrectly reported stimulus money, according to IRS Commissioner Charles P. Retting, resulting in manual reviews and significant refund delays.

You may have already received a Letter 1444-C, which showed the amount you were paid and how it was delivered, but that’s not what you want to use to prepare your 2021 return.

How The Irs Will Determine Stimulus Check Eligibility

The IRS has announced that it will use available information contained in any of the following sources

  • Your 2020 tax return.
  • If no tax return for 2020, then your 2019 tax return.
  • If you did not file either a 2020 or 2019 tax return but registered for the first Economic Impact Payment using the special Non-Filers portal last year, then the information contained therein
  • If you are a recipient as of December 31, 2020, any of the following federal benefits
  • Social Security and Railroad Retirement Board benefits,
  • Supplemental Security Income and
  • Veteran benefits recipients in 2020.
  • Amount Based On 2019 Or 2020 Tax Return

For third-round stimulus payments, eligibility and amounts were based on either your 2019 or 2020 return. If your 2020 tax return wasn’t filed and processed by the IRS by the time the tax agency started processing your third stimulus payment, then the IRS used information from your 2019 tax return. If your 2020 return was already filed and processed when the IRS was ready to send your payment, then your stimulus check eligibility and amount was based on the information on your 2020 return. If your 2020 return was filed and/or processed after the IRS sent you a third stimulus check, but before December 1, 2021, the IRS sent you a second “plus-up” payment for the difference between what your payment should have been if based on your 2020 return and the payment actually sent based on your 2019 return. As a result, your third stimulus check may have been higher or lower depending on when you filed your 2020 tax return.

Third Round Of Stimulus Checks: March 2021

Barely a week after the second round of stimulus payments were completed, new president Joe Biden entered office and immediately unveiled his American Rescue Plan, which proposed a third of round of payments to Americans, including some of those who might have missed out on the first two rounds.

On Thursday 11 March, Biden signed his $1.9tn American Rescue Plan into law. The third payment provided eligible individual taxpayers for a check of up to $1,400, while couples filing jointly could receive a maximum of $2,800. In addition, families with dependents were eligible for an extra payment of $1,400 per dependent, regardless of the dependent’s age this time, there was no limit to the number of dependents that could be claimed for.

The first stimulus payments were issued swiftly – just hours after Biden has signed the bill, the first batch of 164 million payments, with a total value of approximately $386 billion, arrived by direct deposit in individuals bank accounts. Some received their payments on the weekend of 13/14 March 2021. Since then, payments had been sent on a weekly basis including “plus-up” payments until the end of the year. Like before, those who didn’t get all the EPI3 funds in 2021 due to them will be able to claim them when they file their tax returns in the spring of 2022.

What If I Reported My Stimulus Money Incorrectly

If you’ve already filed your 2021 tax return and realized that you reported the wrong information for your stimulus check payments, do not file an amended return. The IRS says that it will correct any mistakes and send you a notification indicating the changes it has made to your return.

Even though you won’t need to file an amended return, making a mistake when reporting stimulus money will definitely delay the processing of your return and any potential tax refund. As mentioned above, stimulus payment errors were one of the biggest reasons for IRS delays last year.

If, however, you filed your 2021 tax return and reported $0 for your recovery rebate credit and you do want to claim more stimulus money, you will need to file an amended return, using IRS Form 1040 X
