When Should Ssdi And Ssi Recipients Get Their Stimulus Checks

Stimulus Checks For Social Security

You can probably expect to receive your third stimulus payment by mid-April. Now that the IRS has Social Security’s files of its active beneficiaries, the IRS will start to release payments to all SSDI and SSI recipients on April 7. The IRS will continue making payments throughout April.

Second stimulus checks. The IRS started sending second stimulus payments to SSDI and SSI recipients in early January. If you haven’t received your second payment, you can create an account on the IRS website to get information on the first and second payments. You should be able to see where the payments were deposited or when they were mailed. The IRS says it may take three or four weeks to get the payment by mail.

Federal Benefit Payments Automatic No Action For Most

Most Social Security retirement and disability beneficiaries, railroad retirees and recipients of veterans benefits who are eligible for an Economic Impact Payment do not need to take any action to receive a payment. These payments will be automatic. Like the previous Economic Impact Payments, Social Security and other federal beneficiaries will generally receive this third payment the same way that they receive their regular benefits.

Some federal benefit recipients may need to file a 2020 tax return, even if they don’t usually file, to provide information the IRS needs to send payments for any qualified dependent. Eligible individuals in this group should file a 2020 tax return to be considered for an additional payment for their qualified dependent as quickly as possible.

Social Security Informing Your Clients About Recent Scams

One common tactic scammers use is posing as federal agents and other law enforcement. They may claim your clients Social Security number is linked to a crime. They may even threaten to arrest your clients if they do not comply with their instructions. Tell your clients to just hang up.

Your clients should remain vigilant of phone calls when someone says theres a problem with their Social Security number or their benefits. If they owe money to Social Security, we will mail them a letter explaining their rights, payment options, and information about appealing.

If your clients do not have ongoing business with our agency, it is unlikely we will contact them. If they get a suspicious call claiming to be from Social Security, they should hang up and report it to our law enforcement office at oig.ssa.gov.

An Important Update To The Goldberg Kelly Payment Continuation Period

The COVID-19 pandemic has made it more difficult for Supplemental Security Income recipients to file a request for reconsideration within the time required to qualify to continue their benefits. The pandemic has also impacted our ability to receive and process these requests quickly. In recognition of these challenges, we are announcing a change to our procedures for requesting reconsideration following receipt of a Notice of Planned Action , also known as a Goldberg Kelly notice.

SSI recipients who file a reconsideration request more than 15 days after the date of a NOPA, but within 65 days of the date of the NOPA, will receive unreduced benefits unless they waive it in writing. For these cases, we will find that there is good cause for the late filing of the request for unreduced benefits.

Your clients can find more information about our revised procedures at secure.ssa.gov/apps10/reference.nsf/links/10292021100254AM.

What If My Stimulus Check Or Was Lost Destroyed Or Stolen

Have You Received A Stimulus Check In The Name Of A Deceased Family ...

If the Get My Payment tool says your payment was direct-deposited, but the money doesn’t show in your bank account after five days, first check with your bank. If the bank says it hasn’t received a payment, you can request a payment trace.

To request a payment trace, call 800-919-9835 or fill out IRS Form 3911, Taxpayer Statement Regarding Refund.

Similarly, if the Get My Payment tool says your payment was mailed and you haven’t received it, you can request a payment trace. The IRS will research what happened to your check if the check wasn’t cashed, you will need to claim the Recovery Rebate Credit on your 2020 tax return. If the IRS finds that the check was cashed, you’ll receive a claim package from the Treasury Department with a copy of the cashed check and instructions on filing a claim.

If you received your stimulus check by mail but then it was destroyed or stolen, make sure you request a payment trace. If you claim the Recovery Rebate Credit on your 2020 tax return without filing a payment trace, it will be denied, because the IRS will think that you already received the money.

Beware Of People Pretending To Be From Social Security

Unfortunately, identify theft and fraud are a part of our current reality. Social Security uses high levels of security to protect your clients identity from being stolen. A new phone scam tricks people into thinking we have called them, and then pressures them into giving out personal information. Social Security never does this. And your clients should never give their personal information to someone over the phone if they do not know who they are.

Heres what your clients need to know:

    • Social Security representatives will never call and threaten you with loss of your benefits or deactivation of your Social Security number.
    • Your caller ID might show the Social Securitys real phone number , but that may not be the real Social Security calling. Computers make it easy to show any number on caller ID. You cant always trust what you see there.
    • Never give your Social Security number to anyone who contacts you. Dont confirm the last 4 digits. And dont give a bank account or credit card number ever to anybody who contacts you asking for it.
    • Remember that anyone who tells you to wire money, pay with a gift card, or send cash is a scammer. Always. No matter who they say they are.

We encourage you to share our Social Security Phone Scam Alert video with your clients to quickly alert them to the dangers of this fraud and give them the tools they need to report it at www.youtube.com/watch?v=8N96ORODZm8.

Social Security Benefits To Increase In 2018

Stimulus checks for social security recipients

When we announce the annual cost-of-living adjustment , theres usually an increase in the Social Security and Supplemental Security Income benefit amount people receive each month. By law, federal benefit rates increase when the cost of living rises, as measured by the Department of Labors Consumer Price Index .

The CPI-W rises when prices increase, making your cost of living go up. This means that prices for goods and services are, on average, a little more expensive. The COLA helps to offset these costs. As a result, monthly Social Security and SSI benefits for more than 66 million Americans will increase2.0 percent in 2018.

Other changes that will happen in January 2018 are based on the increase in the national average wage index. For example, the maximum amount of earnings subject to Social Security payroll tax will increase to $128,400. The earnings limit for workers younger than full retirement age will increase to $17,040, and the limit for people turning 66 in 2018 will increase to $45,360.

For information about the 2018 COLA, visit www.socialsecurity.gov/cola.
