Stimulus Payments 202: Your State Could Still Owe You A Check

When will Social Security recipients get the third stimulus check?

South Carolina and Massachusetts are just two of the states issuing payments to taxpayers.

As the holidays roll in, we could all use some extra money. South Carolina has started issuing for up to $800 to eligible taxpayers. The income tax rebates were approved by state lawmakers as part of this year’s $8.4 billion budget, according to the state Department of Revenue, and payments will continue to go out through December.

South Carolina isn’t the only state issuing residents tax refunds, though: Illinois is still sending out $50 and $100 rebates and Massachusetts began returning $3 billion in surplus tax revenue this month.

Your state could be sending out a rebate or stimulus check, too. Below, see if you qualify and how much you could be owed. For more on taxes, see if you qualify for additional stimulus or child tax credit money.

Do The 62f Tax Refunds Favor Wealthy Bay Staters

There has been some criticism and concern that the Massachusetts 62F tax refunds favor high income residents. Thats in part because the refund amounts are based on a flat percentage.

A Massachusetts Budget and Policy Center analysis puts the likely average amount of the tax refund at about $529 for an average Massachusetts taxpayer. However, data from 2018 indicate that lower income taxpayers could receive tax refunds that are less than $10, while 2020 data show that taxpayers with incomes over $1 million could receive more than $28,000, on average.

Overall, the Massachusetts Budget and Policy Center concluded that almost 75% of the nearly $3 billion in tax refunds will go to people whose incomes are in the top twenty percent of Massachusetts income distribution.

Social Security: Will Those Collecting Benefits See A Fourth Stimulus Check People Are Still Pushing For One

Those collecting Social Security and SSI payments have been hopeful for a fourth stimulus check as advocacy groups push for more help.

While groups have been working tirelessly to try to get people another payment who need it most, its not likely to happen.

Inflation has only risen and continues to remain incredibly high. As Social Security recipients battle the cost of living on a fixed income, Congress isnt doing much to help.

A petition was created to try and help seniors on Social Security receive a fourth stimulus check worth $1,400. Despite the major support it got, it probably isnt going to happen.

The Senior Citizens League has been the group pushing for the one time payment worth $1,400, according to The Sun. The reason for this is because Social Security and SSI recipients are living on a fixed income. As prices rise, these individuals incomes are not rising to keep up.

A letter was sent to Congress from the Senior Citizens League detailing why the need for a fourth stimulus check existed.

The group shared that theyve received hundreds of emails detailing the struggles seniors on Social Security face. Some are cutting their medication dosage in half while others are cutting back to only eating one meal per day.

Further Details On These Expanded Tax Benefits

The three credits include:

  • An expanded Child Tax Credit: Families can claim this credit, even if they received monthly advance payments during the last half of 2021. The total credit can be as much as $3,600 per child.
  • A more generous Earned Income Tax Credit: The law boosted the EITC for childless workers. There are also changes that can help low- and moderate-income families with children. The credit can be as much as $1,502 for workers with no qualifying children, $3,618 for those with one child, $5,980 for those with two children and $6,728 for those with at least three children.
  • The Recovery Rebate Credit: Those who missed out on last year’s third round of Economic Impact Payments may be eligible to claim the RRC. Often referred to as stimulus payments, this credit can also help eligible people whose EIP3 was less than the full amount, including those who welcomed a child in 2021. The maximum credit is $1,400 for each qualifying adult, plus $1,400 for each eligible child or adult dependent.

Besides these three credits, many filers may also qualify for two other benefits with a tax return filed for 2021:

Further details on all these benefits are available in a fact sheet, FS-2022-10, posted earlier this year on IRS.gov.

The federal government made direct payments to individuals totaling $931 billion to help with COVID-19. However, it was challenging for the IRS and Treasury to get payments to some people.

We found that nonfilers , first-time filers, mixed immigrant status families, and those experiencing homelessness were among those likely to have trouble receiving these payments in a timely manner.

We recommended that Treasury and the IRS tailor their outreach efforts to educate such people about their eligibility for these payments.

In 2020 and 2021, IRS and Treasury issued $931 billion in direct payments to individuals to ease financial stress due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
