What Can I Do If I Havent Received My Payments Or If Im Eligible To Receive More

Understanding the $2 trillion stimulus package and economic impact payments

There are several scenarios where individuals may not have received any or all of the payments theyre eligible for. Common situations include:

  • You dont normally file taxes and the IRS doesnt have your recent information on file.
  • You moved or changed bank accounts since the last time you received a tax refund or other benefit.
  • You had a child in 2020 and are eligible to receive EIPs for your dependents.
  • You were previously claimed as a dependent but became independent in 2020. For example, you turned 19 , 24 , graduated, or got married.

To receive your first and second EIP or an adjusted amount, you must file a 2020 tax return or file for an extension by May 17, 2021. The Recovery Rebate Credit on Line 30 on the individual income tax return allows you to claim missed payments.

What Can I Do If I Have Not Received My Eip Money By Those Deadlines

If you have not received all or some portion of your Economic Impact Payments by the deadlines above, you will have to file a 2020 tax return and claim these amounts. You claim them on line 30 of the 2020 Form 1040 as a “Recovery Rebate Credit“. This is another name for the EIP stimulus payments. If you did not get all or a portion of the EIP payments in advance, then you can claim them on line 30 of your tax return for 2020.

When Could My Stimulus Check Arrive

The American Rescue Plan Act became law last Thursday. That beat the deadline, when the previous $300 federal unemployment benefit bonus expired. The IRS, having twice worked through the process of distributing payments, was ready to start it again immediately. And people have already noted economic impact payment deposits in their bank accounts. Early recipients tended to be people who have bank accounts on file and submitted recent tax returns.

The President has stated that roughly 85 percent of Americans will ultimately receive money. In general, direct deposits arrive more quickly, many over the course of this week. Paper checks and debit cards, which have to be mailed, could take quite few weeks. At least that was the case for the previous two payments. Payments go out in batches, meaning there’s little cause for concern this early in the process. The legislation says the government technically has until the end of the year to distribute the money.

The IRS has a helpful tool called Get My Payment to let people track the status of their stimulus check.

The First Round Of Stimulus Checks

Economic impact payment debit card: Don’t trash your stimulus money

The first round of stimulus payments were authorized under the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act. In 2020, the IRS had issued 162 million payments totaling $271 billion. The Congressional Budget Office estimates that those first-round payments will eventually cost a total of $292 billion.

Those initial payments issued earlier in 2020 were $1,200 per person, or $2,400 for those filing jointly, plus $500 per qualifying child. The payments began phasing out at the same income levels as the current payments, but since the payments authorized under the CARES Act were larger, the maximum income levels to receive a payment were also larger:

  • $99,000 for single taxpayers
  • $136,500 for taxpayers filing as head of household
  • $198,000 for married couples filing jointly

Will I Get An Economic Impact Payment

If you meet the following four requirements, you likely qualify for the stimulus.

1. Income Limits: If you are filing as single with an adjusted gross income up to $75,000, married filing jointly with an AGI up to $150,000, or head of household with an AGI up to $112,500, you will receive the full payment. Above these income limits, the payment amount decreases 5 percent for every additional $100 of income up to $99,000 for a single adult, $136,500 for head of household, and $198,000 for a married couple.

If you have zero income you can still get the payment.

2. Age requirements: There is no age requirement for the stimulus check, however you cannot be someone elses dependent. Children must be under 17 to get the additional payment for them.

3. Taxpayer Identification Number :At least one tax filer must have a valid Social Security number . If you are married filing jointly, and one spouse has an SSN and one has an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number , the spouse with an SSN and any children with SSNs or an Adoption Taxpayer Identification Number can get the payment. If one spouse is an active member of the military, then both spouses are eligible for a stimulus check even if only one spouse has an SSN and the other spouse has an ITIN.

4. Citizenship or Residency: You must be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or qualifying resident alien.

Will I Need To Pay Back Stimulus

Because the Economic Impact Payments are advances on credits for your 2020 taxes, youll reconcile that when you file next year, Taylor notes.

Right now, the IRS is basing your stimulus checks on either your 2019 or 2018 tax returns, depending on the most recent return youve filed. Because the tax filing deadline was delayed until July 15 rather than the traditional April 15 deadline, some Americans havent yet filed their 2019 returns. In that case, the IRS will look at your 2018 returns to determine your payment.

But what happens when the IRS reconciles that Economic Impact Payment with your 2020 income next year, especially if your income changes? The upside is that consumers whose earnings increase beyond the $75,000 and $150,000 thresholds wont need to pay back their stimulus checks, tax experts say.

And its possible that consumers could see bigger tax refunds, such as if their income drops in 2020. Thats a situation likely for many taxpayers, given that a record 22 million taxpayers have filed for unemployment in the past month.

It won’t negatively impact your refund, but it could positively impact your refund, Bronnenkant says.

The IRS will attempt to deliver your payment to the account information provided on your tax return. Some RALs and RACs are issued through debit cards. If the card is still active, you will receive your payment on the card. If the account or card is no longer active, the deposit will be rejected, and the IRS will send a paper check to the address on the tax return.

You can request a payment trace to track where and how your payment was delivered. You should only request a payment trace if you received IRS Notice 1444 showing that your first stimulus check was issued or if your IRS account shows your payment amount and you havent received your first stimulus check. See Question 24 to learn more about how to request a payment trace.

The Third Round Of Stimulus Checks

The most recent checks were included in the American Rescue Plan, which was enacted on March 11, 2021. Eligible individuals will receive a payment of $1,400 , plus an additional $1,400 per eligible child. However, those payments phase out quickly for incomes above $75,000 for single taxpayers, above $112,500 for taxpayers filing as head of household, and above $150,000 for married couples filing jointly. Taxpayers would be ineligible for any payment, unless they have a qualifying child, above the following income levels:

  • $80,000 for single taxpayers
  • $120,000 for taxpayers filing as head of household
  • $160,000 for married couples filing jointly

Similar to previous iterations of the payments, most taxpayers will receive the funds by direct deposit. For Social Security and other beneficiaries who received previous payments via debit card, they will receive this third payment the same way. Overall, such payments are expect to cost $411 billion through 2030 according to the Congressional Budget Office.

It likely wont make a difference in the longer term other than to update dependent or payment data, but the IRS will only use your 2020 tax return data to determine eligibility for this round of stimulus checks if they have processed your return . If your 2020 return has not been filed and processing, they will use 2019 tax data for payment.

If your 2020 return is filed and/or processed after the IRS sends you a third stimulus check, but before July 15, 2021 the IRS would send you a second payment or require a repayment for the difference between what your payment should have been if based on your 2020 return and the payment actually sent based on your 2019 return.

What Could Delay My Stimulus Check

Stimulus checks: IRS says it issued 120M economic impact payments this ...

Some will inevitably experience delays in receiving their third stimulus check. The IRS is right in the middle of tax season. While CARES Act checks went out around the same time last year, the tax deadline was pushed from April 15 to July 15. The second stimulus check was distributed before the 2020 tax season began. This time, though, the IRS is handling the dual burden of distributing millions of relief payments while accepting and processing millions of tax returns. It’s been reported that the tax deadline will be pushed until mid-May, which could relieve some of the burden.

Sending out periodic Child Tax Credit checks is another task that will fall to the IRS. But that isn’t due to to start until July.

Aside from institutional delays, a whole host of personal factors could play into when someone’s money actually arrives. Most of them stem from what information the IRS has on file for you and how they’re allowed to use it.

The IRS needs to have current bank account information, which they’ve used to issue a tax refund. They can’t make a payment to someone using an account and routing number they previously only used to accept payment. The IRS also requires up-to-date earnings and personal information to issue the proper payment. For the first stimulus check, that came from 2018 or 2019 tax filings. For the second stimulus check, it came from 2019 tax filings. The IRS is pulling that information from 2019 or 2020 tax filings this time around.
