Will North Carolina Governor Go For A Fourth Stimulus Check Old North State Residents Might Get Up To $500

While the clamor grows in both Houses of the Congress for a fourth stimulus check, residents of North Carolina might get one if Roy Cooper, their Governor pushes through a proposal.

The Democrat leader proposed that the North Carolina government sends out direct stimulus checks of $500 max to most residents of the state.

Termed the Extra Credit Grants 2.0, this could be the continuation of a program started by the Republicans and approved in September 2020. The program provides $335 to over a million homes in the state.

The fresh plan is to invest $250 million as grants to middle and low-income families having children. This would to a large extent lessen the pervasive financial suffering that families are going through due to the economic downturn caused by the pandemic.

Taxpayers must earn $100,000 or less to be eligible for the payment.

Child Tax Rebate checks will be issued automatically starting in October 2022. Taxpayers filing their 2021 state tax returns on extension by October 2022 will receive their rebates starting in December.

Massachusetts: Up To 7% Of Income May Be Returned

Massachusetts taxpayers will receive rebate checksbut how much theyll receive wont be officially announced until September 20. Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker will use a 1986 law to return $3 billion to state taxpayers.

The state auditors office declared the state surplus to be some $2.3 billion. And under Chapter 62Fthe 1986-era law, tax rebates are allowed when theres a revenue surplus.

Residents are expected to receive about 7% of the amount of income tax they paid to Massachusetts in 2021. For someone with a $75,000 income, that would mean a rebate of about $250, state officials told WBUR.

Indiana: $325 Rebate Payments

Like Georgia, Indiana found itself with a healthy budget surplus at the end of 2021, and it has authorized two rebates to its residents.

In Dec. 2021, Gov. Eric Holcomb announced that Indiana taxpayers would get a $125 one-time tax refund after they filed their 2021 taxes.

Theres no income requirement. Residents must have filed a state tax return for the year 2020 by Jan. 3, 2022, as well as a 2021 Indiana tax return by April 18, 2022, to be eligible. Payments started in May, according to a state information page.

Taxpayers who filed jointly will receive a single deposit of $250.

A second rebate was approved in August 2022 to grant another $200 per taxpayer.

Most taxpayers will receive their refunds by direct deposit, and the second payments started rolling out in late August. If you changed banks or dont have direct deposit information on file, youll receive a paper check. A printing delay put mailing the first round on hold for several months, but mailing resumed in mid-August. Checks mailed after that point contain payments for both rebates, for a total of $325 per taxpayer.

Distribution of printed checks is expected to take place through early October. If you did not file your 2021 tax return by the April deadline, you can claim your $125 rebate on your 2022 taxes.

How Will The Irs Calculate My Payment

The American Rescue Plan provides that if your 2020 tax return is not filed and processed by the time the IRS starts processing your third stimulus payment, the tax agency will use information from your 2019 tax return. If your 2020 return is already filed and processed when the IRS is ready to send your payment, then your stimulus check eligibility and amount will be based on information from your 2020 return.

If your 2020 return is filed and/or processed after the IRS sends you a stimulus check, but before July 15, 2021 , the IRS will send you a second payment for the difference between what your payment should have been if based on your 2020 return and the payment sent based on your 2019 return. Most people do not need to take any action. The IRS will calculate and automatically send the payment to those eligible.

I Am Divorced Am I Eligible To Receive The Grant

This determination is based on federal law. In addition to meeting other eligibility requirements, generally, your child must be claimed by the custodial parent which is the parent with whom the child lived for the longer period of time during the year. However, the custodial parent may execute Federal Form 8332 which states that the custodial parent will not claim such credit and the noncustodial parent can attach the form and claim the child. Whichever parent or guardian has the authority to claim the child on their federal income tax return will have the authority to claim the child on the state income tax return and would be able to receive the grant.

Some Homeowners Are Also Entitled To Financial Relief

Covid 19 Stimulus Check Payment Status Not Available

Some homeowners could also get financial help this month. This could come from the Homeowner Assistance Fund . The American Rescue Plan Act set aside almost $10 billion for homeowner relief, and more than 40 states have now set up HAF programs to facilitate the distribution of the funds. The funds will be distributed to the states by the Treasury Department.

Money from HAF can be used to help with mortgage payments, home insurance costs, utility expenses, or other “specified purposes.” Those who are interested can check the Homeowner Assistance Fund website to find out if they are eligible and to learn how to apply for funding.

Between these state programs and HAF, millions could soon be entitled to money from the government to help them cope with the ongoing financial consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic. Be sure you understand how to claim your payments if you could be entitled to this important financial relief.

Financial Assistance For Health Insurance

More Help to Pay for Health Coverage under the Affordable Care Act :

The American Rescue Plan provides financial assistance to help consumers get health insurance through the Federal Health Insurance Marketplace under the Affordable Care Act .

Under the plan, consumers can receive increased premium tax credits to pay for coverage in 2021 and 2022, eliminating or reducing premiums for millions of current Marketplace enrollees to ensure that no one on the exchange spends more than 8.5 percent of their income on coverage premiums, regardless of their income level.

This reduces the current 9.83 percent limit for people with income of 300 to 400 percent of the poverty line and establishes a new premium cap for Marketplace enrollees with higher incomes.

Under the bill, people with income below 150 percent of the poverty line would pay no premiums for a benchmark plan, after accounting for premium tax credits. Families who make more will pay a fixed percentage of income toward Marketplace health coverage.

This will significantly reduce premiums for people who are currently eligible for financial help by increasing their premium tax credits. For example:

  • A family of four making $75,000 would pay $340 rather than $588 per month in premiums for benchmark coverage . A typical family could purchase a gold plan with lower deductibles and other cost sharing for about $440 per month .

How Effective Were Covid Stimulus Checks

Inspirational Quote

Stimulus checks, which were designed as advance tax credits, were largely effective in helping consumers cover essential expenses during Covid shutdowns.

Those who received a payment told the Bureau of Labor Statistics their top uses for the money included food , rent and mortgage payments .

A few features helped make the relief effective, including the fact that earned income was not required in order to qualify and the tax credits were refundable, meaning they didnât just reduce your tax bill, but could also be refunded to you.

â Treasury and IRS got a lot of money out the door to eligible individuals very quickly,â says James R. McTigue, Jr., director of tax policy and administration at the U.S. Government Accountability Office . The GAO issues regular reports on the federal response to COVID-19.

But there were challenges distributing payments. Some of the most financially burdened people were least likely to receive a check, including 12 million people who werenât required to file their taxes and did not automatically receive the CARES Act stimulus payment.

âWe found that underserved communities such as nonfilers, first-time filers, unbanked/underbanked, mixed immigrant status families, those with limited internet access, and those experiencing homelessness were likely to experience difficulties with receiving timely payments,â McTeague says.

Child Tax Credit Stimulus Update

If youll recall from all our child tax credit coverage in 2021, Congress got a bit creative in how it structured the payout of that expanded benefit. Lawmakers essentially sliced it in half. Recipients got the first half up front, in 2021, spread out over six monthly checks.

The second half, however, is still coming later this year.

All of those recipients who got six child tax credit checks in 2021? Theyre also getting that same cumulative amount in the form of a tax credit. One that they can use when they file their federal taxes this year. For millions of Americans, theyll either be taking a $1,500 or $1,800 credit per child. Thats what those six checks added up to .

Th Stimulus Checks Given Out To Targeted Groups

Some states are digging into that wad of cash the government gave them and giving out the fourth stimulus checks to specific groups of people. The requirements look different for each state, but all seem to have a few things in commonlike falling into certain income levels or going through some kind of hardship.

The Grand Canyon State has a different take when it comes to stimulus checkstheyre giving them out to people who are going back to work. Arizonas Back to Work Program is offering $2,000 to those who got a job after being on unemployment.3 But you have to hold down your new job for at least eight weeks before getting the benefit.

The Golden State is the only one on the list to give out big ol broad-sweeping stimulus checks that look like the ones the federal government gave out. Heres how their numbers break down: Californians making $75,000 or less were sent a one-time check of $600 or $1,200 as part of the Golden State Stimulus I.4 And with the Golden State Stimulus II, they could be eligible for a second stimulus payment anywhere from $500 to $1,100.5 Thats on top of extra money the state paid out through the Young Child Tax Credit to those who have children age 6 or younger.6

These guys decided to shift their focus to giving their stimulus checks to the unemployed. They sent $375 to folks who had gotten at least one unemployment check payment between March 15, 2020, and October 24, 2020.7
