New Round Of Golden State Stimulus Checks On Its Way

While Michigans stimulus check program is still being thought out, inflation relief checks are a done deal in many states. California residents are set to receive up to $1,050 in inflation relief checks, beginning in October 2022. Californias relief program, being funded by the states excess budget money, also includes a temporary pause on the diesel sales tax. The relief is for households making less than $500,000.

In Virginia, households are getting up to $500 in inflation relief checks. The state is also offering a $1,000 bonus to some public service workers, including teachers, has cut the sales tax on groceries, and is offering a 10 percent salary increase to certain public servants.

Virginians will receive some needed sales tax relief this weekend as they support local businesses across the Commonwealth! Building on the record tax relief, lowering the cost of living remains a top priority for my administration. Start shopping tomorrow!

What Other Aid Is Out There

While a fourth stimulus check is improbable, more direct payments to Americans have already been signed into law. The American Rescue Plan includes an improved Child Tax Credit and extended unemployment benefits.

Under the revised Child Tax Credit, the Internal Revenue Service is paying out $3,600 per year for each child up to five years old and $3,000 per year for each child ages six through 17. Monthly payments of up to $300 per child started July 15 and will continue through December of 2021. The remainder to be issued when the recipient files their 2021 taxes. The benefit do not depend on the recipient’s current tax burden. In other words, qualifying families will receive the full amount, regardless of how much — or little — they owe in taxes. Payments start to phase out beyond a $75,000 annual income for individuals and beyond $150,000 for married couples. The more generous credit will apply only for 2021, though Biden has stated his interest in extending it through 2025.

The far-reaching American Jobs Plan includes some elements not traditionally associated with infrastructure. On a broad scale, the plan also has the potential to create many jobs across a wide swath of the economy. How the proposed initiatives are ultimately distributed across the scaled-back bipartisan outline and the broader Democratic plan remains to be seen.

A Look At The First Three Rounds Of Stimulus Payments

To help low and medium-income citizens through this crisis, the federal government has distributed large swaths of stimulus checks to eligible adults three times to date.

On March 11, 2021, the American Rescue Plan passed. $195 billion was given to 50 states, i.e., approximately $500 million for each state. The states have until 2024 to decide what they want to do with the money and until 2026 to spend it.

To provide direct assistance, the federal government distributed the first stimulus check of $1,200 in April 2020 for individuals, $2,400 for married couples, and an additional $500 per child under 17.

The second stimulus check of $600plus an additional $600 for each dependent aged 16 and underwas distributed in December 2020.

Finally, the third stimulus check was sent in March 2021 as an advance payment of the tax year 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit. Along with this, many Americans received a child tax creditand an advanced child tax credit which allowed the IRS to deliver money to millions of bank accounts for filers who claimed a dependent. Those who opted out of the advance payments would be able to claim the child tax credit and receive a higher refund when filing their tax return.

Inflation Is One Reason Why There Won’t There Be A Fourth Stimulus Check

Why That First $1,200 Stimulus Check Might Be the Last You See For ...

Rising inflation is a major concern in the USA right now, with the rate hitting 7.5% for January of 2022. When the last of the stimulus checks came out, in March of 2021, inflation was just 2.6%.

Some believe that the stimulus checks helped start the spike in inflation and, whether that’s true or not, another stimulus check wouldn’t help that situation.

Here Are Some Questions And Answers Around This New Stimulus Payment:

If I didnt file taxes in 2019/2020 will I receive the stimulus ? Unlike the first stimulus payment where those who didnt need to file a tax return could update the IRS non-filer tool, this time around due to the speed of roll-out of the second stimulus check and with tax season around the corner the IRS has said the non-filer tool is closed for updates. The IRS will be using information they have as of Nov 21, 2020 or from your first stimulus check payment . Otherwise they are encouraging you to the stimulus by filing a 2020 1040 or 1040-SR tax return. Free tax software programs can be used by people who are not normally required to file tax returns but are eligible to claim the credit.

How will I get paid? Like the first stimulus payment in 2020, the IRS will facilitate payment of these checks based on your 2019 tax information. You will also get the dependent stimulus payment for eligible dependents claimed on your tax return. For other groups who dont file taxes the IRS will work with other government departments or the Get My Payment tool. Direct deposit will still be the fastest way to get your payment.

Dependents in 2020? Households who added dependents in 2020 might not qualify for full payments immediately, since based on 2019 tax return information. But they can request additional money as part of the 2020 tax returns they will file in early 2021. See more in this articles for dependent qualification income thresholds.

Don’t Miss: How Many Stimulus Payments Were There In 2021

When Will A Second Stimulus Check Be Issued

The government began sending direct deposit payments on December 28, 2020. Paper checks were sent out starting on December 30, 2020.

Payments are automatically sent to:

  • Eligible individuals who filed a 2019 tax return.
  • Social Security recipients, including Social Security Disability Insurance , railroad retirees, and Supplemental Security and Veteran Affairs beneficiaries.
  • Individuals who successfully registered for the first stimulus check online using the IRS Non-Filers tool or who submitted a simplified tax return that has been processed by the IRS

There is no action that you have to take to get your second stimulus check. People who provided their banking information with the IRS shouldve received their stimulus checks by direct deposit. Social Security and Veterans Affairs beneficiaries who received the first payment via Direct Express shouldve received the second payment the same way.

The IRS sent paper checks or prepaid debit cards to people who did not provide their banking information. Mailed payments may be delivered in a different format than the first stimulus check.

All second stimulus checks were issued by January 15, 2021. If you didnt get a second stimulus check by then , you can claim your second stimulus check as the Recovery Rebate Tax Credit on your 2020 tax return or use GetCTC.org if you dont have a filing requirement.

A Fourth Stimulus Check Isn’t A Priority For Politicians

Fourth stimulus check may be on the way

The third explanation for the lack of a fourth stimulus check is the simple fact that politicians aren’t doing anything to make it happen. Some don’t think there is a need, partly because of the two reasons outlined above, while others have other priorities right now.

Even before the gas prices crisis and the Russian invasion of Ukraine, calls for a fourth stimulus check were growing quieter. Republicans were even joined by some Democrats in being against the idea of a fourth stimulus check, so there weren’t many calls for one because the politicians knew it’d be impossible to pass anyway.

What About People With Itins

You still need a work-authorizing Social Security Number to be eligible for this stimulus. However, there are important changes since the first round of stimulus checks.

  • In the first stimulus rollout, any non-SSN holder on a joint return made everyone on that return ineligible. Big change: The new rounds of stimulus has corrected this problem. If you filed a joint return with a non-SSN holder, you are still eligible for the stimulus. See the below hypotheticals.
  • Situation: A single tax filer has an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number but no Social Security number .
  • This person is ineligible for the stimulus.
  • Situation: A spouse has a Social Security number and files married filing jointly on a tax return with a spouse who has an ITIN.
  • The SSN holder is now eligible to get a payment. If they have children on the tax return that have SSNs, these children will be eligible for the payment for each qualifying child.
  • Situation: Two ITIN holders file a joint return and claim young children who have SSNs.
  • The children who have SSNs are eligible for the payment.

Fourth Stimulus Check: Will There Be Another Relief Payment

Stimulus checks have been a financial lifeline for families finding their way through COVID. The pandemic isn’t quite over, as the Delta variant has case numbers rising in many states. Still, life in the U.S. continues to settle into some sort of new normal. The surging economy isn’t affecting everyone the same way. Some people’s finances have improved, but other people’s haven’t. Unemployment remains above pre-pandemic levels, even as the number job openings rise. Many states have already discontinued the federal unemployment bonus. Meanwhile, the federal eviction moratorium ends in about a week, and millions of people are still short of food and behind on bills. The new Child Tax Credit, which started on July 15, is helping some. But more government assistance, in the form of a fourth stimulus check, might better serve those in need. Will Americans see it in 2021?

That question still hasn’t been answered definitively. There are some clues that signal where things are heading.

The third round of relief payments started back in March, courtesy of the American Rescue Plan . Since then, about 169 million people have received up to $1,400 each, accounting for most of the $422 billion set aside. The ARP checks closely followed the $600 payments from January, which came nine months after the $1,200 payments from the pandemic’s early days.

As Central Texas Families Continue Struggling A Fourth Stimulus Check Could Be On The Way

Sound Of Cannons: The Feds have thrown away $5 trillion on wasteful ...

KILLEEN, Texas – Lawmakers and advocates are saying the American Rescue Plan is failing to rescue families who have struggled since the start of the pandemic, proposing a fourth and recurring stimulus plan should be put in place.

In Central Texas, Local Realtor Jeremy Fay says two years into the pandemic, most families hes helped find a home have barely stayed afloat thanks to their stimulus pay. Now, with no new stimulus checks officially coming in, families are getting concerned.

The harsh reality is that there are a lot of families still enduring hardships, he said.

A lot of these are FHA and VA buyers, these are people local in our community. These are our military service members who I try to work with all the time and try to help them qualify for housing. Its difficult because housing costs continue to rise, costs across the board are going up.

Lawmakers say the proposal for recurring $2,000 stimulus payment every month would last until the pandemic is over. However, Texas A& M Central Texas Economics Professor Rob Tennant says while a fourth stimulus check is certainly possible, recurring payments isnt economically feasible.

Theyll have more money to work with, which could potentially drive inflation further harder and higher, as well as causing more shortages, he said.

So, it can create a vicious cycle. It doesnt mean the suffering of people doesnt matter it just means all aspects of this need to be taken into consideration.

Last week, Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Bakers plan to send out a $250 tax rebate check cratered after legislators failed to come to a consensus. But, thanks to an obscure voter referendum, residents will likely get a payout anyway.

The exact dollar amount is still being determined, but Bakers office predicted people would get 7% of their 2021 income taxes back.Massachusetts is just one of many states to address rampant inflation and the growing threat of a recession with tax rebates and stimulus checks: Florida is queuing up $450 inflation relief payments to eligible families, and California is issuing a middle-class tax refundworth as much as $1,050.
