Indiana found itself with a healthy budget surplus at the end of 2021, and it authorized two rebates to its residents.

In December 2021, Gov. Eric Holcomb announced that Indiana taxpayers would get a $125 one-time tax refund after they filed their 2021 taxes.

Taxpayers who filed jointly could receive a single deposit of $250.

A second rebate was approved in August 2022 to grant another $200 per taxpayer.

Most taxpayers will receive their refunds by direct deposit and the second payments started rolling out in late August. If you changed banks or didnt have direct deposit information on file, you should have received a paper check.

Kentucky Lawmakers Debate Effect Of Federal Stimulus On Upcoming Budget Plan

FRANKFORT, Ky. — The Senate Appropriations and Revenue Committee was presented Wednesday with Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear’s budget, and unusually, there is extra money to spend from 2022-24.

One hurdle, though, is the question of whether the current positive economic outlook is facade because of stimulus checks and other federal boosts.

“We also know the feds has pumped $4 trillion to $6 trillion into the economy,” Sen. Stephen West said. “What if that kind of zaps the economy?”

Under Beshear’s plan, teachers would get a 5% pay increase and there would be universal full-day Kindergarten and pre-K for all Kentucky 4-year-olds.

For public safety, he wants to help with the Kentucky State Police deficit, providing a $15,000 raise for troopers and funding body cameras for KSP.

Beshear said especially because of the pandemic, the health care industry needs to see financial returns. He wants more money going into local health departments and incentives to help with the nursing shortage.

State Budget Director John Hicks defended the economy, saying federal boosts are long gone.

“Those things did the job,” he said. “They bridged through the pandemic recession. “No national forecast that we have seen is predicting a dip.”

    Sen. Danny Carroll wasn’t convinced.

“It’s hard to really argue that it’s an accurate portrayal of where our economy actually is right now,” Benton said.

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Congress has passed the third stimulus check relief package, President Joe Biden signing it into law last week.

Itll bring $1,400 payments per taxpayer, plus their dependents listed on their tax returns. Weve received many questions from you about when youll see your check in the mail or in your account.

As you wait for your check or come across any questions along the way, you can use the tool online provided by the IRS called Get My Payment.

According to Dana Overall, a certified public accountant in Richmond, the tool will tell you if your payment has been issued and give a direct deposit date.

He says if the site says anything else, that doesnt mean youre not getting your check, rather the check has not yet be issued. Overall explains you dont have to pay taxes on your stimulus check, but you have to report it on your tax return.

He says if you got less money on the first stimulus checks than you were entitled to, reporting the check will get you a refund on your 2020 tax return.

Overall says if you have not filed a tax return, do it as soon as possible. If your check goes to the wrong account or address, you can input information on the get my payment tool.

Stimulus Check From Kentucky: What Is It

Both the chambers in Kentucky have come up with different tax plans. The Senate has proposed a one-time tax rebate, while the House wants to reduce the income tax rate from 5% to 4%. This new tax rate, if approved, would be effective January 1, 2023.

Specifically, the Senate approved a $1 billion rebate, while House Bill 8 proposes reducing the income tax rate. The House bill also calls for additional rate reductions to zero if the state hits revenue goals going forward.

The Senates proposal of a one-time tax rebate of $500, if approved, would go to individual tax filers. Joint filers, on the other hand, would get a $1,000 rebate, unless they paid less than $1,000 in state taxes. In case the taxpayers paid less, they would get a stimulus check from Kentucky of a lower amount. They would get no rebate at all if they paid no taxes.

Lawmakers expect a compromise on the proposals from both chambers.

We came to an agreement on that with the house last week, Sen. Damon Thayer, R-Georgetown said. The bill is in the process of being printed now and I think we will deal with it either Tuesday or Wednesday.

The Kentucky General Assemblys 2022 session is scheduled to end Wednesday. Along with the proposal to give a tax rebate to Kentuckians, the lawmakers will also be deciding the fate of many other proposals, including sports betting, medicinal and charter schools.

Is Congress Talking About A Fourth Stimulus Check

There are no signs that lawmakers in Washington, D.C. are in serious discussions about a fourth direct payment stimulus check. While there have been calls by the public and from some lawmakers for recurring payments, there has been practically nothing in terms of action.

Emails and phone calls to the White House, Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., who is chair of the Senate Budget Committee, and Rep. John Yarmuth, D-Ky., chair of the House Budget Committee, asking if such payments are under discussion were not returned.

One pandemic-related stimulus that is being considered for an extension is the monthly advance child tax credit. It raised the previous tax credit from $2,000 at tax time to $3,000-$3,600 with the option of monthly payments. A one-year extension is part of the Build Back Better bill that passed the House. But Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.V., announced Sunday he would not vote for it. With no Republicans on board, passage of the bill is doomed unless an alternative is found.

A group of Democrats sent a letter to Biden in back in May , but the letter did not get into specifics and nothing else came of it.

A change.org petition started by Denver restaurant owner Stephanie Bonin in 2020 called on Congress to pass regular checks of $2,000 for adults and $1,000 for kids for the duration of the pandemic crisis.

As of late December, the petition has reached nearly 3 million signatures.
