Havent Received 2nd Stimulus Check? Here Are 4 Reasons Why

It depends on which tax return the IRS uses . For example, if the IRS goes by your 2019 tax return, it’s likely you’d get to keep the amount you received for the deceased person. With the first stimulus check, the IRS asked people to return the money for someone who had died since the previous tax filing. With the second check, if your spouse died in 2020 and your AGI was less than $112,500 a year, you would be eligible for the full $600 amount.

How You Can Get Your Stimulus Money If You Never Received A Check Or Payment

How you can get your stimulus money if you never received a check or payment

Q13s AJ Janavel reports

SEATTLE If you have not received a previous stimulus payment, you can still get those dollars into your pocket through your tax return.

While most Americans wait to hear when they will receive $1,400 from a new stimulus package, some are still waiting for one of the first two checks.

It was crushing it was devastating. Everyone around was getting their money, said Zach Hudson.

Hudson said he got his first payment with no issue but still has not received a second stimulus check.

Hes reached out to the IRS. He said he sat on hold for hours, but still got no information.

Q13 News reached out to experts to get answers for you.

The recovery rebate credit is available to people who have not received stimulus payments who qualify for them, said Isaiah Gresham.

Gresham is a tax expert and president of Gresham Financial. This year, hes asking clients directly if they received their stimulus payments because those dollars are there for you if you know how to get them.

Once we have that information when were filing their tax return, there is an opportunity for us to claim that credit for them. If they have not received the stimulus but they qualify, He said.

Gresham said you should be prompted with a similar question if you file your taxes online.

What To Do If There’s A Direct Deposit Issue

The IRS tracking tool for the third stimulus check doesn’t allow you to add direct deposit information this time unless the IRS can’t deliver your payment. So if you have a problem, what do you do? Your check may have bounced back to the IRS if the agency tried to send your payment to a now-closed bank account or to a temporary prepaid debit card a tax preparer set up for you. If your payment was returned to the IRS, the agency will mail your check to the current address it has on file for you. If that check is returned, then the IRS will let you enter your banking information in the Get My Payment tool, the IRS said.

First, we suggest you call your bank or tax preparer — it never hurts to cover all your bases to confirm that an attempt was made to deposit money into a closed account or debit card.

Unfortunately, you’ll need to wait and monitor the Get My Payment tracker to keep tabs on your check delivery. We also recommend signing up for a free service to track your check to your mailbox.

How To Claim My Stimulus Check On 2020 Tax Return

by Adam Shell, AARP, February 4, 2022

Nobody wants to leave money on the table, especially a stimulus payment from the U.S. government that theyre eligible for but didnt receive. In late January the Internal Revenue Service announced that all third-round stimulus checks had been sent. But the IRS also noted that not all eligible Americans received the full amount theyre entitled to.

The good news? Theres still time to get whats owed to you.

Uncle Sam which issued 175 million third-round payments, totaling over $400 billion, through the end of 2021 reminded people that they can claim any remaining stimulus money theyre entitled to but didnt get by claiming the Recovery Rebate Credit on their 2021 income tax return.

The rebate, which comes as a tax credit of up to $1,400 per eligible person on your 2021 return, will either lower the amount of tax you owe or boost the size of your refund. The golden prize of a tax return is a tax credit, says Mark Steber, chief tax information officer at Jackson Hewitt, a tax preparation service. The Recovery Rebate Credit is a dollar-for-dollar tax-liability offset.

Youre Married And Filed A Joint Tax Return

If youre married and filed a joint tax return, half of your third stimulus payment might be delayed. Thats because the IRS is sending two separate payments to some joint filers. The first half may come as a direct deposit, which you may have already received. But the other half is then mailed to the address the IRS has on file, which is generally the address on your most recent tax return or as updated through the U.S. Postal Service. The second payment could come the same week as the first oneor it might not arrive for a few weeks.

If youre a joint filer and only get half of what you should have received, both you and your spouse should check the IRSs Get My Payment tool separately using your own Social Security number to see the status of your payments.

MyFreeTaxes is an easy online tool that helps you file your taxes for free. The site offers free step-by-step guidance to filing taxes as well as help through an online chat. Tax filing is free for both federal and state tax filing.

MyFreeTaxes offers a broader range of tax forms than most VITA sites. However, you cannot use this site if you have self-employment income. If youre not comfortable using the website on your own, ask someone you trust to help you.

Another free online option is Free File Alliance, a suite of programs in partnership with IRS. You can find Free File programs on the IRS website. If you choose to use one of these programs, read the fine print carefully. Each program has slightly different criteria for their software. In addition, some companies offer free state tax returns, while others dont.

What Happens After You Use The Payment Trace Tool

The IRS will find your money! According to NJ.com, this will happen in one of two ways: if the check was never cashed, you will get issued a new one. If the check was cashed, then you have to get a claim from the Treasury Departments Bureau of the Fiscal Service, which you have to fill out. The agency will then review whether or not a new payment can be issued.

Keep in mind that the IRS is absolutely swamped at the moment and has also been tasked with creating a portal for monthly payments for American families with kids, so it might take longer than you want it to for you to get your stimulus checks, even after using the tool. But you will at least figure out where it is and what happened to it, eventually.

What if I never got my first $1,200 stimulus check?

Initially, individuals receiving Social Security , veterans, Supplemental Security Income , or railroad retirement benefits were told they would receive their stimulus checks automatically in the same way they receive their benefits. However, many still have not received their checks. This may be because the government does not have all the information they need to confirm who should receive it. If you still havent received your check, the IRS is asking that you use their non-filer website to request your check before October 15th. Those with dependents under age 17 should use the non-filer website by September 30th to receive the $500 dependent payment this year. Those who miss these deadlines may also request their check on their 2020 tax return next year.

You Didnt File A 2019 Or 2020 Tax Return

Generally, the IRS will look at your 2019 or 2020 tax return to see if youre eligible for a third stimulus check and, if so, to determine the amount of your check. If you didnt file a 2019 or 2020 return , then the IRS is stuck. It doesnt have the information it needs to send you a payment readily available.

For some people, the IRS got the necessary information from another federal agency that is paying you benefits . After it got the information, the IRS was able to start sending payments to those beneficiaries but waiting to get the data caused a delay. For example, the IRS just recently started sending payments to millions of federal beneficiaries.

If the IRS isnt able to get the information needed to process your payment , then youll have to claim the amount youre entitled to as a Recovery Rebate credit on your 2021 tax return. But theres an easy way to avoid this simply file a 2020 tax return, even if you dont have to.

Theres still plenty of time to file a 2020 return. The IRS pushed back this years return filing deadline from April 15 to May 17, 2021, so you have an additional month to get your 2020 return to the IRS. The tax agency has until the end of the year to send out third-round stimulus payments, so you can still get a check if you havent filed yet it will just take longer for you to get it.

Eligibility For A ‘plus

You can estimate how much money the IRS owes your household for the third stimulus check. Just make sure to triple-check that you meet the qualifications, including the income limits.

Because of the overlap with tax season 2020, many people may receive some, but not all, of their allotted amount. If your income changed in 2020, in some cases, the IRS may owe you more money than you received if the income figure used to calculate your payment from your tax returns in 2018 or 2019 is less in 2020. Likewise, if you now have a new dependent, such as a new baby, you may be owed more money.

The IRS is automatically sending “plus-up payments” to make up the difference. If you don’t get one, you may need to claim the missing money another way later in 2021 or even in 2022, since tax season is officially over now.

IT

If you received your payment by check and it was lost, stolen or destroyed, you may need to request a payment trace so the IRS can determine if your payment was cashed. See How do I request a payment trace to track my first or second Economic Impact Payments?

If a trace is initiated and the IRS determines that the check wasnt cashed, the IRS will credit your account for that payment, but the IRS cannot reissue your payment. Instead, you will need to claim the 2020 Recovery Rebate Credit on your 2020 tax return if eligible.

You will enter $0 for both stimulus payments. Please be aware that the processing of our return will be longer since the IRS will have to match the information.

For the fastest processing, the IRS encourages citizens to file 2020 tax returns electronically. The agency has not yet announced when you can start filing 2020 tax returns. As the situation unfolds, more information may become available.

But First Make Sure To Double

You may want to double-check that you qualified for the second payment before trying to file for the rebate credit as there were some differences between who was eligible for the second stimulus payment compared to the first. As the Peter G. Peterson Foundation explains, individuals earning more than $87,000, single parents making more than $124,500, and married couples earning more than $174,000 were not eligible for the second round of payments. The income caps for the first stimulus payments, meanwhile, were higher at $99,000 for individuals, $136,500 for single parents, and $198,000 for married couples.
