Supplemental Security Income Recipients Act Now Go To Irsgov A Message From Social Security Commissioner Andrew Saul Action Needed For People Receiving Ssi With Dependents And Who Do Not File Tax Returns To Receive $500 Per Child Payment

Supplemental Security Income recipients who dont file tax returns will start receiving their automatic Economic Impact Payments directly from the Treasury Department in early May. People receiving SSI benefits who did not file 2018 or 2019 taxes, and have qualifying children under age 17, however, should not wait for their automatic $1,200 individual payment. They should immediately go to the IRSs webpage at www.irs.gov/coronavirus/non-filers-enter-payment-info-here and visit the Non-Filers: Enter Your Information section to provide their information. SSI recipients who have dependent children and did not file 2018 or 2019 taxes need to act by Tuesday, May 5, in order to receive additional payments for their eligible children quickly.

I urge SSI recipients with qualifying children and who do not normally file taxes to take action now. Immediately go to IRS.gov so that you will receive the full amount of the Economic Impact Payments you and your family are eligible for.

Lastly, a word of caution. Be aware of scams related to the Economic Impact Payments. There is no fee required to receive these payments. Dont be fooled.

What If I Get My Social Security Benefits On A Government Debit Card Instead Of Direct Deposit How Will I Receive My Stimulus Check

If you qualify for a stimulus check, you will receive it on your existing Direct Express card. If you dont have a Direct Express card, you cannot sign up now to receive your stimulus payment on the card.

This federally-issued debit card is designed specifically for Social Security and other federal beneficiaries who dont have bank accounts. Some 4.5 million Americans use Direct Express and most of them are unbanked, meaning they dont have bank accounts to receive direct deposits.

The original Treasury announcement on April 1 didnt give specific guidance on if these debit cards would be utilized for stimulus payment. Retirement experts pushed for clarity, stating that putting stimulus payments on these cards would be the smartest and safest way to get these payments to qualifying seniors without bank accounts as quickly as possible.

Now, the IRS and Direct Express have confirmed that these cards will be loaded with stimulus payments.

IRS will pay Economic Impact Payments automatically to the existing Direct Express® card accounts of most eligible Social Security, Supplemental Security Income , Veterans, and Railroad Retirement Board recipients, reads the Direct Express FAQ on stimulus payments, which can be found as a PDF on the websites homepage.

The Senior Citizens League wants Social Security recipients to receive a $1,400 emergency stimulus check to help them cope with inflated prices.

The Social Security Administration said more than 69million people received benefits.

This year, the SSA increased the cost-of-living adjustment to 5.9% to keep pace with inflation.

That boosts the average monthly retirement check by about $92, but itâs not enough for many who live on a fixed income.

Coronavirus Stimulus Checks: What Seniors And Caregivers Need To Know

The global health emergency caused by the novel coronavirus has had a devastating effect on the economy. Social distancing, shelter-in-place orders, and limitations on nonessential business and public gatherings have hit the stock market, businesses of all sizes and American households very hard. Despite economic growth in recent years, a 2019 report published by the Financial Health Network found that only 29 percent of Americans are considered financially healthyand this data was collected before the coronavirus pandemic struck.

Widespread illness, furloughs, and permanent layoffs coupled with recommendations for families to stock up on food and household goods have exacerbated financial stress and insecurity. To encourage spending, support individuals and businesses, and help revive the economy, President Donald Trump signed a $2 trillion stimulus bill entitled the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act into law. An important part of this aid package is direct monetary payments to millions of Americans. Most people will not have to do anything to receive their stimulus checks, but some people who dont typically file tax returns will need to take additional steps to receive their economic impact payments.

What Retirees Need To Know About Stimulus Checks

According to the law, individuals earning up to $75,000 in annual income and families earning up to $150,00 were eligible for payments of $1,400 per person. The payments would phase out for higher incomes. For example, an individual making $80,000 and a family making over $160,000 would not get a payment at all.

Do retired people get stimulus checks, though? Those already receiving Social Security, Veterans, and Railroad benefits including retirees would automatically get the $1,400 payment. In most cases, these payments were deposited to the same account that monthly Social Security benefits go into.

Would A Tax Increase Pay For All This

Stimulus checks for social security recipients

The bill would increase the Social Security payroll tax on higher-income workers. Currently, workers pay the Social Security tax on their first $147,000 of earnings. To be sure, most Americans earn less than that. But higher-income workers who make more than $147,000 annually dont pay the Social Security tax on any earnings above that level.

Under the bill, the payroll tax would kick in again for people earning above $250,000. Only the top 7% of earners would see their taxes go up as a result, according to DeFazio.

However, theres one quirk about this arrangement: It would create a donut hole in which earnings between $147,000 and $250,000 would not be subject to the payroll tax, Shedden noted.

The bill would also extend the Social Security payroll tax to investment and business income, an issue that could face resistance. Im leery about that, she said. Social Security was set up to be based on contributions on earned income, and this mixes up the basket of earned and unearned income.
