What to do if you didn’t get a stimulus check

If the Get My Payment tool gave you a payment date but you still haven’t received your money, the IRS may need more information. Check the Get My Payment tool again and if it reports “Need More Information,” this could indicate that your check has been returned because the post office was unable to deliver it, an IRS representative told CNET. Here are more details on how the tracker tool works and what the messages mean.

You can track your stimulus check with the Get My Payment tool, which can tell you whether your stimulus check has been sent and how you will get paid.

What To Know If You’re A Nonfiler And Don’t File Your Taxes

If you’re a nonfiler and typically aren’t required to file income taxes, you’re eligible to receive the third stimulus check. However, if you’re missing money from a previous check you may need to take an extra step to get your money by filing your taxes this year. If there’s an issue receiving some or all of a third check, it’s likely you would need to file a claim during next year’s tax season.

Your Stimulus Check Eligibility Could Depend On Your Taxes

If you’re right on the cusp of the income limits described below, when you file your taxes could make the difference between qualifying for a partial check or not. That’s because a third stimulus check is now arriving during tax season.

The language in the stimulus bill makes it clear that the IRS will base your next stimulus check on your 2019 or 2020 taxes, whichever is on file when it processes your payment. However, the IRS is reportedly delayed in processing new tax returns. If you made more in 2020 than in 2019, time is on your side. The new tax deadline is May 17. If you need more time, you might want to request a tax extension.

At this point of the stimulus check delivery cycle, filing taxes sooner may not be to your advantage. The IRS is prioritizing stimulus check distribution over tax returns, and when the processing happens is outside your control.

If you did already receive your third stimulus check and it was based on your 2019 taxes but you qualified for more with your 2020 return, the IRS will be sending “plus-up payments” to correct the amount between now and Dec. 31, 2021. If you don’t receive your catch-up payment by then, you’ll need to claim it on your taxes next spring.

Didnt Get Your $1400 Coronavirus Stimulus Check The Irs Can Help

Your first stop: the IRS helpful online tool.

Heres What You Need To Know: Many people may not be aware, but U.S. taxpayers can actually speak to a live human regarding their missing stimulus checks.

With the disbursement of the latest much-anticipated sixth batch of coronavirusstimulus checks to two million more Americans, the Internal Revenue Service and the Treasury Department have sent out a total of one hundred sixty-one million payments worth more than $379 billion.

To date, the figures represent more than 85 percent of the $450 billion total earmarked for stimulus fundsbut know that despite this achievement, there appears to be thousands of Americans who are still struggling to get their hands on the stimulus cash.

There is, however, good news that may lower some anxiety levels. For those who are missing one or more stimulus check payments, there is still time to claim the money due from the government.

Be aware, though, that the deadline is fast approachingand will close on the extended Tax Day of May 17.

For weeks, the government has been urging Americans who do not receive federal benefits or typically file tax returns to submit one this year in order to provide their necessary payment information to receive the cash.

If you didnt get any payments or got less than the full amounts, you may qualify for the Recovery Rebate Credit and must file a 2020 tax return to claim the credit even if you dont normally file, states the IRS website.

How To Track Your Stimulus Payment

What if I never got my first $1,200 stimulus check?

The good news is that in many cases, the third stimulus payment may still be on the way if you havent received it yet. If youre still waiting on your money, you can keep an eye on the mail for a paper check or prepaid debit card.

If you want to see whats landing in your mailbox before the mailman arrives, you can use the USPS Informed Delivery system tool to keep an eye on any paper checks or debit cards headed your way.

You can also track your payment through the IRSs Get My Payment tool. This tool gives you information on whether youre in line to receive a stimulus payment. If you are, the tool will tell you how and when it will be sent to you.

What If Another Stimulus Payment Is Approved

The incoming Biden administration plans to include a $2,000 stimulus payment as part of its COVID-19 relief legislation, which would be structured as a $1,400 addition to the latest round of payments. But what if you didn’t get the second round of payments? Would these be claimable as Recovery Rebate Credits, as well? Unfortunately, we don’t know the details of how an additional stimulus payment would work at this time.

The good news is that Biden has indicated that his administration plans to move quickly with its initial relief efforts, which include adding $1,400 to the latest round of stimulus payments. While we don’t have many details about how those payments could be delivered and whether you could claim them as a Recovery Rebate Credit if you don’t automatically receive them, there’ll likely be some clarification sooner rather than later.

The Motley Fool has a disclosure policy.

Your Payment Is Lost Or Stolen

If your third-round stimulus check is lost in the mail, stolen, or otherwise goes missing, then it might be a while before you get your cash. If that happens to you, you need to ask the IRS to do a payment trace to see if your check was cashed.

Unfortunately, though, the payment trace takes time. Plus, you have to wait a certain period of time before you can even make the request. Although, of course, just adds to the delay in receiving your payment.

Make sure you follow the IRSs procedures for requesting a payment trace, too. If you miss a step or otherwise mess up, thats just going to slow things down even more.

The Latest On $1400 Stimulus Checks

This tax season, the government is also issuing a third tranche of third stimulus checks for up to $1,400 per individual, plus $1,400 per eligible dependent.

Last week, the IRS and other agencies said about 127 million checks have been sent to date, for a total of approximately $325 billion.

Those $1,400 payments are generally based on 2019 or 2020 tax returns, whichever was most recently filed and processed by the IRS. Those who used the IRS non-filer tool last year should also automatically get their payments.

There are also advantages to filing a 2020 return in order to receive the $1,400 payment, according to the IRS.

If your income dropped from 2019 to 2020, you could be eligible for a larger payment. The IRS has said it may potentially send follow-on payments to those people after their 2020 tax returns are processed.

Filing a 2020 tax return also lets you update your direct deposit information.

This tax season, non-filers are also required to file a tax return in order to get their payment, provided they have not already submitted their information to the government.

Of note, people who receive federal benefits such as Social Security, Supplemental Security Income, Railroad Retirement Board and Veterans Affairs will generally receive their stimulus checks automatically, though there have been delays in processing some of those payments.

What If I Already Filed My Return And My Refund Was Adjusted

Why Didnt I Get A Stimulus Check? Where To Find Status

If you are filed your 2020 or 2021 tax return before starting a trace and did not include the payment amount on line 16 or 19 of the Recovery Rebate Credit Worksheet, you may receive a notice saying your Recovery Rebate Credit was adjusted.

After the trace has been completed and it is determined your payment has not been cashed, an adjustment will be made and a check sent to the taxpayer. You will not need to take any additional action to receive the credit.

    What Information Will You Need

To access the tool, youll be asked to provide a:

    • Social Security Number or Individual Tax ID Number
    • Street address and
    • Five-digit ZIP or postal code.

If you file a joint tax return, either spouse can typically access the portal by providing their own information for the security questions used to verify a taxpayers identity. Once verified, the same payment status is shown for both spouses. In some cases, however, married couples who file a joint tax return may get their third stimulus payment as two separate payments half may come as a direct deposit and the other half will be mailed to the address the IRS has on file. If that case, each spouse should check the Get My Payment tool separately using their own Social Security number to see the status of their payments.

If you submit information that doesnt match the IRSs records three times within a 24-hour period, youll be locked out of the portal for 24 hours . Youll also be locked out if youve already accessed the system five times within a 24-hour period. Dont contact the IRS if youre shut out. Instead, just wait 24 hours and try again.

Wait You Might Be Getting A Paper Check

GettyCovid-19 stimulus checks havent arrived for all.

We know that might not be the answer youre seeking. But you may just have to wait. Its possible that, for multiple reasons, the IRS might be mailing you a check instead of using direct deposit. If youve fallen into that category, it could take several months to receive your check. Paper checks didnt even start going out until late April, according to The Chicago Tribune. In addition, the IRS is sending checks to those with lowest income first. Its also possible you didnt provide the IRS with the basic information the agency needs to send your check.

As of May 6, the IRS had already sent out 130 million stimulus checks but was still expected to send out millions more, The Associated Press reports.

The #IRS Get My Payment tool is operating at record volumes. So far, 9.8M people got an Economic Impact Payment status and 1.6M provided direct deposit info. In some situations, the app responds: Status Not Available. Learn what this means at

    IRS #COVIDreliefIRS

If you filed your 2019 tax returns late, the IRS might still be processing it, which is simply delaying your check, according to Money. If you didnt file a 2019 return, the IRS is using 2018.

Who Will Actually Get A Recovery Rebate Credit

Most Americans already received the full amount of the 2021 recovery rebate credit as a third stimulus check payment. For those people, subtracting the stimulus money they previously received will reduce their recovery rebate credit to zero. So, if you received a full third stimulus check, there’s no need to complete the worksheet to calculate the credit.

However, certain groups of people could very well end up with a positive credit amount, which will result in a lower 2021 tax bill or larger tax refund. For example, assuming you’re eligible, you may be able to claim a recovery rebate credit if:

    • Your AGI was above the applicable phase-out threshold on your 2019 or 2020 tax return , but it’s lower on your 2021 tax return
    • You added a dependent in 2021
    • You share custody of your child, your ex-spouse claimed the child as a dependent for the 2020 tax year, and you claim the child as a dependent for 2021
    • You got married in 2021
    • You could be claimed as a dependent on someone’s 2019 or 2020 tax return , but not on anyone’s 2021 return
    • You receive Social Security or veterans benefits, didn’t file a 2019 or 2020 tax return, and care for a dependent child, but the IRS didn’t get information about the child from the SSA or VA
    • You didn’t have a SSN in 2021 but are issued one by the due date of your 2021 tax return
    • The IRS sent you a third stimulus check that was less than what you were entitled to receive or
    • The IRS didn’t send you a third-round stimulus check at all.

    Confirm That Youre Eligible

Third Stimulus Checks: When and How Will You Get $1,400?

While a reported 150 million Americans are eligible for an Economic Impact Payment, not everyone qualifies. Youre not qualified if you had an adjusted gross income in 2019 of more than $99,000 for individuals, $146,500 for head-of-household filers, and $198,000 for married couples filing jointly.

Additionally, if youre claimed as a dependent on someone elses return, dont have a valid Social Security number, or are a nonresident alien, youre not eligible.

Noncitizens Need To Meet These Marriage Requirements To Qualify

If you’re considered a noncitizen, you may or may not get a stimulus check, depending on a couple of factors. Under the new bill, mixed-status households with at least one family member who has a Social Security number could be eligible for the third stimulus check, assuming they meet the other requirements, including the income limits.

What To Do If You Never Received The Third Payment

The IRS encourages residents to double check their bank accounts first to make sure they never got the third payment, especially in early spring and summer of 2021.

People can also access their IRS Online Account to view the total amount of the third-round Economic Impact Payment issued to them. For married couples filing jointly, each person will need to log into their own online account.

Once people confirm they never got the payment, and their IRS online accounts show a payment amount greater than $0, or if they got a Notice 1444-C or Letter 6475, they should contact the IRS as soon as possible to see if a payment trace is needed.

But they do not need to wait until their trace is complete to file their 2021 tax return, officials said.

When completing the Recovery Rebate Credit worksheet, taxpayers have two options: either use the amount on the Letter 6475 to calculate the recovery rebate credit amount on line 30, or use the amount of stimulus payment the taxpayer believes they received to calculate the rebate credit amount on line 30.

Those who contact the IRS to trace the stimulus payment amount will receive notification of the results. If it is found that the taxpayer didnt get the money, the IRS will adjust the recovery rebate credit amount on the tax return and issue any refund.
