I Already Got My Third Stimulus Check Through Direct Deposit Why Do I Need To Keep The Irs Letter

Next round of stimulus #3 checks on the way

The IRS sends a letter — notice 1444 — to every stimulus check recipient. You want to keep this letter. It confirms that you got a payment and the payment amount. Your check total won’t be available on the IRS tracking tool.

This notice is also the easiest way to file an adjustment with the IRS at a later date if it turns out that part of your allotted stimulus funds are missing. The agency recommends keeping the letter with your tax records. You can recover the information online if you lose this notice, but it’s a rather involved process that could take a couple days.

What If I Still Haven’t Gotten The First Or Second Stimulus Check

You’ll need to file your 2020 tax return to claim any stimulus money you’re owed from the first two rounds.

There will be a separate worksheet on your tax return with instructions for calculating any outstanding amount owed to you, called the Recovery Rebate Credit. If you file your taxes online, the provider will prompt you to enter the information and do the calculations for you.

If you do qualify for additional stimulus money, you won’t get it right away. It will first be applied to your outstanding tax bill. If your bill is reduced to $0, the rest of the money will be added to your refund. The IRS delivers most refunds within three weeks.

The First Round Of Stimulus Checks

The first round of stimulus payments were authorized under the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act. In 2020, the IRS had issued 162 million payments totaling $271 billion. The Congressional Budget Office estimates that those first-round payments will eventually cost a total of $292 billion.

Those initial payments issued earlier in 2020 were $1,200 per person, or $2,400 for those filing jointly, plus $500 per qualifying child. The payments began phasing out at the same income levels as the current payments, but since the payments authorized under the CARES Act were larger, the maximum income levels to receive a payment were also larger:

  • $99,000 for single taxpayers
  • $136,500 for taxpayers filing as head of household
  • $198,000 for married couples filing jointly

The IRS is also now processing third stimulus check payments for this group of recipients and their dependents, following several weeks of delays. This was mainly attributed to in getting updated payment and dependent data from other federal agencies . The majority of SSI and SSDI recipients should have now started seeing stimulus payments hitting bank accounts, with mailed checks and debit cards arriving in the coming weeks. But it would not surprise me if their newly eligible dependent payments take even longer to get paid out.

For those Social Security and other federal beneficiaries who didnt file a 2020 or 2019 tax return and didnt use the Non-Filers tool last year, payments will start as part of batch 3 and 4 processing . The IRS is also making stimulus payments for Veterans Affairs benefit recipients with the GMP tool now showing payment status for this group of recipients.

What Can I Do If I Have Not Received My Eip Money By Those Deadlines

If you have not received all or some portion of your Economic Impact Payments by the deadlines above, you will have to file a 2020 tax return and claim these amounts. You claim them on line 30 of the 2020 Form 1040 as a “Recovery Rebate Credit“. This is another name for the EIP stimulus payments. If you did not get all or a portion of the EIP payments in advance, then you can claim them on line 30 of your tax return for 2020.

What Is The Timeline For Receiving A Stimulus Payment

After the House and Senate pass the bill, the President will need to sign the bill into law. Once the bill is signed into law, stimulus checks would likely begin to deposit in accounts within a few days. The Treasury Department previously initiated direct-deposit for the first and second stimulus payments using information on your tax return. The Treasury Department mailed checks and debit cards to recipients in the following weeks.

The current weekly addition of $300 in unemployment benefits is set to expire March 14, 2021. Lawmakers say they are on track to prevent additional benefits from expiring before that date, so its possible payments would be available in mid-March.

The Us Federal Government Sent Out Three Waves Of Stimulus Payments Since The Start Of The Covid

The US is in the throes of another wave of covid-19 infections with case numbers surpassing all previous peaks. In the past this led to the federal government stepping up to help Americans left struggling in the disruption the pandemic has wrought on livelihoods and household finances. However, this time despite workers out sick or quarantining no new federal stimulus checks look set to be sent out.

In a recent press release the Internal Revenue Service put out its annual report highlighting the efforts of its employees in 2021. One of the accomplishments touted by the agency has been successfully delivering more than $1.5 trillion to people across the nation through Economic Impact Payments, tax refunds and advance Child Tax Credit payments. Here’s a look at the three Economic Impact Payments, better known as stimulus checks.

When Will Your Third Stimulus Check Arrive

The American Rescue Plan authorizes a third round of stimulus checks. When might you receive your payment?

The IRS started sending third stimulus check payments just a couple of days after President Biden signed the American Rescue Plan Act. In less than a week, 90 million Americans had pocketed a total of $242 billion in stimulus payments. But that was just the first wave of payments. More stimulus checks will be sent mostly by direct deposit, but some through the mail as a paper check or debit card. So, if you’re eligible for a payment but haven’t received your third stimulus check yet, hang in there.

We don’t know yet how long it will take to distribute all payments. Hopefully, it will be a matter of weeks, not months, before the vast majority of third stimulus checks are delivered. We shall see. In any event, whether you get your payment in the next few days or in a couple of weeks, at least you know payments will be sent soon. And since the IRS has bank account information for more Americans than it did when first-round stimulus checks were being processed, they’ll be able to deposit payments directly into bank accounts for most eligible Americans. This will speed up the payment process considerably. That’s good news for people who lost income because of the pandemic and desperately need the extra cash.

Recap Of First And Second Rounds Of Stimulus Payments

Most Americans have received their initial $1,200 stimulus checks, or economic impact payments , as the Internal Revenue Service calls them. The first round of stimulus money, which was approved under the $2.2 trillion CARES Act in March 2020, also included $500 payments for eligible dependent children under age 17. Payments were sent via direct deposit, paper check and prepaid debit card.

Congress included a second round of stimulus checks in a $900 billion coronavirus relief bill in December 2020 that offered most Americans payments of up to $600 for themselves and their dependent children under age 17. It was a way to put more money directly in the pockets of families still struggling to manage the economic fallout of the pandemic. By law the IRS had until January 15, 2021, to issue the bulk of the second-round stimulus checks.

If you didnt get the first two rounds of payments, or thought you didnt get as much as you deserved, you can collect your missing stimulus money by filing a 2020 tax return and claiming the Recovery Rebate Credit.

Do I Have To File 2020 Taxes To Get The Third Stimulus Check

No. The Treasury can use 2019 or 2020 tax returns to determine your payment.

It will also send payments to people who don’t file taxes, but who either used the IRS nonfilers tool last year to submit information or receive federal benefits such as Social Security retirement or disability and Supplemental Security Income.

However, if you qualify for more money based on your 2020 income or need to claim additional dependents, you will need to file a 2020 tax return so the IRS can top off your payment.

The 2021 Stimulus Payment

On March 11, 2021, the American Rescue Plan was signed into law. It called for sending a third round of stimulus checks to Americans. The American Rescue Plan authorized a $1,400 stimulus payment to eligible people. Learn more about it on the IRS website. Most people already received their payments, which were based on income reported on their 2019 or 2020 tax return.

If you believe you did not get all or part of the $1,400 stimulus from the American Rescue Plan of 2021, you should claim this as a recovery rebate credit on your 2021 tax returnLearn where to get help filing your taxes.

Who Qualifies For The Third Stimulus Check

Direct cash payments are part of a $1.9 trillion economic package called the American Rescue Plan that President Biden signed on March 11.

Anyone with a Social Security number who meets the income requirements is eligible for a payment. The amount is based on the adjusted gross income on your 2019 tax return, unless your 2020 return has already been processed.

Americans with AGIs of $75,000 or less will get the full $1,400 payment. Married joint filers will receive double that $2,800 if their AGI is $150,000 or less. There’s also an additional $1,400 added to the check for each qualifying dependent of any age. This is a break from the past two relief bills, which did not include payments for dependents age 17 and over but did include smaller amounts for children.

Head-of-household filers, who are most often single parents, with AGIs of $112,500 or less will get the full $1,400, plus $1,400 per qualifying dependent.

The legislation gives reduced checks to people earning above those income limits, before phasing out completely at an AGI of:

  • $80,000 for single filers
  • $120,000 for head-of-household filers
  • $160,000 for married joint filers

Second Stimulus Check Date: When Can You Expect Payments

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin has said throughout negotiations that Americans could expect a quick turnaround for the stimulus check 2 date once a deal was reached. The IRS presumably has more data on file now from both taxpayers and those who submitted their information specifically to receive their first check earlier this year.

Before 2021: If the President does in fact pass the bill before Saturdaywith votes in both the House and Senatethe IRS could begin processing payments the following week. While an exact timeline is tricky to pin down with the upcoming holidays, this means direct deposits could land in bank accounts right before or shortly after Jan. 1 with paper checks not far behind.

While past timelines have been hampered by Congressional recess dates, lawmakers appear committed to staying in session until a deal is reached.

Before Inauguration Day: Of course, if talks drag on beyond the weekend, lawmakers opt for a short-term government funding bill instead, or Congress breaks for a holiday recess, stimulus check 2 could be pushed back as well.

After Inauguration Day: Theres also the possibility that the deal will fall apart and be left up to the Biden administration to push through. President-elect Joe Biden will be sworn in on Jan. 20if negotiations move quickly after Inauguration Day, a bill could pass in early February with checks following by mid-month.

How Much Does The Third Stimulus Check Pay

The $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief plan includes a third round of $1,400 stimulus payments, topping off the $600 checks that were already approved by Congress in December 2020, and adding up to $2,000.

Congress passed the coronavirus relief plan with targeted income limits for maximum stimulus payments to individual taxpayers earning under $75,000 and joint filers making up to $150,000. But whereas the first and second rounds of stimulus payments phased out checks on a sliding scale of $5 for every $100 over the income limit, the new plan cuts off high earners at $80,000 for individuals and $160,000 for couples.

Eligibility for the third stimulus checks is based on your tax filing status. For more information on who qualifies for a third stimulus check, our tables below will help you calculate different payment options.

New Mexico: $500 Rebates

In early March, Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham signed a law to send multiple rebates to state taxpayers.

Taxpayers earning under $75,000 annually received a rebate of $250 . The rebate was issued in July and sent automatically to taxpayers who filed a 2021 state return.

Another rebate was issued to all taxpayers. Single filers received $500, and joint filers received $1,000. This rebate was split into two equal payments, delivered in June and August 2022. The funds were sent automatically to taxpayers who filed a 2021 state return.

A taxpayer earning under $75,000 annually could potentially receive up to $750 with the combined rebates.

Residents who dont file income tax returns should have received a rebate in July. Single individuals without dependents received $500 households with married couples or single adults with dependents received $1,000.

If you file your 2021 state income tax return by May 31, 2023, youll receive your rebate by direct deposit or check. If you owe tax from your 2021 return, it will be deducted from your rebate amount.

Mailed Paper Checks Or Debit Cards

The form of payment for the third stimulus may be different than the first or second one. Some people who received a paper check last time might receive a prepaid debit card this time, and some people who received a prepaid debit card last time may receive a paper check. The IRS has emphasized the payments are automatic, and they should not contact their financial institutions or the IRS with payment timing questions, unless after the first round processing is complete.

Also note, third stimulus check payments will not be added to an existing debit card that was mailed for the first or second round of stimulus payments. Under the legislation a new card must be issued.

Can My Third Stimulus Check Be Garnished For Unpaid Debt Or Taxes

These payments are protected from all federal and state offset. That means you’ll get the full amount you qualify for even if you have past-due federal or state debt, such as child support, or you owe taxes from previous years.

But, because Congress used a process called “budget reconciliation” to pass this stimulus bill which only allows certain types of legislation to pass through Congress private collectors will have the right to garnish stimulus check money that lands in your bank account to cover unpaid debts. This is different from the previous $600 stimulus check, which had protections against garnishment.

Several consumer and banking trade groups signed a letter to Congress pushing for legislation to protect the new stimulus check funds from garnishment.

“We believe it is imperative that Congress ensure that these next stimulus payments are treated as ‘benefits’ subject to the federal exemption from garnishment,” the groups wrote. “Otherwise, the families that most need this money those struggling with debt and whose entire bank accounts may be frozen by garnishment orders will be not be able to access their funds.”
