The new covid-19 variant of Omicron had financial markets very worried at first, with a rapid transmission rate, but early studies have calmed them a little as illness, on the whole, appears to be less severe.

The Omicron variant is spreading fast around the US. This has given a boost to the prospect of further stimulus checks as the risk of great economic trouble lies ahead. Nancy Pelosi made overtures in an interview on Sunday that further stimulus relief could be included in future bills.

How likely is a fourth stimulus check for SS beneficiaries?

The Senior Citizens League , a non-partisan advocacy group, started a pressure campaign to push Congress to send those receiving Social Security additional stimulus money. In a letter to leaders of Congress, TSCL Chairman Rick Delaney called for a one-off $1,400 Social Security stimulus payment for seniors. Such a measure could help defray the costs associated for some seniors from the 2022 cost-of-living adjustment, which was the highest in 40 years, pushing them into a higher tax bracket.

Can Congress Make A Fourth Stimulus Check For Seniors Happen

Congress could act at any time, paving the way for a fourth stimulus check whether it be to seniors or Americans at large. The question is Will they?

It remains unlikely that a fourth stimulus check lands in bank accounts by the end of 2021. However, 2022 is a new year and if supply chain issues continue to drive up the cost of goods and services theres increased likelihood that another round of stimulus checks become necessary.

If not, Congress could have to act in controlling the cost of various goods and services to serve as a check-and-balance to growing economic uncertainty in the U.S. for people of all ages.

Social Security Benefits: Payment Dates

" Will I get a stimulus payment if I receive Social Security disability?"

The January check next year will be based on recipients’ birth dates, according to the Social Security Administration.

  • People who claimed Social Security before May 1997 or who receive both Social Security and Supplemental Security Income will receive their Social Security payment on January 3.
  • People who receive SSI will get their first 2023 payment on December 30 of this year. That is because these benefits are usually paid on the 1st of each month, but due to January 1 being a holiday and December 31 falling on a Saturday, the Social Security Administration said it will issue these checks two days earlier than usual.
  • For people whose birthday falls between the 1st to 10th of any month, their Social Security payments arrive on the second Wednesday of the month. That means the first check with the 2023 COLA will land on January 11.
  • Those with birthdays that fall between the 11th to 20th of any month will have their payments deposited or mailed on the third Wednesday of each month. Their first check with the enhanced COLA will arrive on January 18.
  • If a recipient’s birthday falls between the 21st and 31st, their payments are scheduled for the fourth Wednesday of each month. Their first 2023 COLA will arrive on January 25.

What If I Contract Covid

If you have Original Medicare and have to be hospitalized because of the coronavirus, you will still have to pay the Medicare Part A deductible, which is $1,408 per hospital visit for 2020. Most Medigap plans will help cover this deductible.

For seniors with Medicare Advantage plans deductibles and copays for hospital stays vary by plan. If you would normally be ready to be discharged from the hospital but have to remain under quarantine because you have COVID-19, you won’t be charged extra for being kept in a private room and won’t have to pay an additional deductible.

WASHINGTON The Social Security Administration transmitted payment information for nearly 30 million to the IRS to get stimulus checks out the door after several Congressional leaders said they were alarmed at the lack of payments.

Beneficiaries of Social Security, SSI , Veterans Affairs and Railroad Retirement Board havent received their third checks and still have no estimated timeline on when they will get payments.

Already about 90 million people have received their third wave of stimulus checks, according to a joint letter to the heads of the Internal Revenue Service and Social Security Administration.

However, we were alarmed to learn recently that most Social Security, SSI, RRB, and VA beneficiaries who are not required to file a tax return have not yet received their payments and that the IRS is unable to provide an expected timeline for these payments, said Reps. Richard Neal , John Larson , Bill Pascrell and Danny Davis in the letter sent earlier this week.

On Wednesday, the group sent a follow-up letter to Social Security Administration Commissioner Andrew Saul after learning the agency hasnt sent the necessary payment files to the IRS, delaying the payments of nearly 30 million people.

The SSA responded at 8:48 a.m. , according to the Congressional leaders, saying they had sent the info to the IRS.

They also praised the work of SSAs public servants.

Social Security Expedites Decisions For People With Severe Disabilities Agency Adds To Compassionate Allowances List

Stimulus checks for social security recipients

Andrew Saul, Commissioner of Social Security, today announced five new Compassionate Allowances conditions: Desmoplastic Small Round Cell Tumors, GM1 Gangliosidosis – Infantile and Juvenile Forms, Nicolaides-Baraister Syndrome, Rubinstein-Tybai Syndrome, and Secondary Adenocarcinoma of the Brain. Compassionate Allowances is a program to quickly identify severe medical conditions and diseases that meet Social Securitys standards for disability benefits.

Social Securitys top priority is to serve the public, and we remain committed to improving the disability determination process for Americans, said Commissioner Saul. Our Compassionate Allowances program gets us one step closer to reaching our goals by helping us accelerate the disability process for people who are likely to get approved for benefits due to the severity of their condition.

The Compassionate Allowances program quickly identifies claims where the applicants condition or disease clearly meets Social Securitys statutory standard for disability. Due to the severe nature of many of these conditions, these claims are often allowed based on medical confirmation of the diagnosis alone. To date, more than 600,000 people with severe disabilities have been approved through this accelerated, policy-compliant disability process. Over the last decade, the list has grown to a total of 242 conditions, including certain cancers, adult brain disorders, and a number of rare disorders that affect children.

Update On Stimulus Checks For Ssi Recipients

For the first stimulus check, the IRS required those who had just started to receive SSDI or SSI to use the “non-filer page” to file a simple tax return. Individuals who had already been receiving Social Security disability, SSI, or veterans benefits should have automatically received the stimulus money without filing a simple tax return, but they had to submit their non-filer information to the IRS to get $500 for each child under 17. The IRS did not make the non-filer tool available for the second or third stimulus payments.

Lawmakers Alarmed By Delay

The delay in delivering stimulus payments to Social Security recipients and others on government assistance drew attention from lawmakers earlier this week. On March 22, members of the House Ways & Means Committee wrote to IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig and Social Security Administration Commissioner Andrew M. Saul to express concern and demand an update on the delivery of checks to these groups by Friday.

They followed with the letter on Wednesday, demanding that you immediately provide the IRS with this information by tomorrow, March 25, 2021.

In the March 22 letter, they noted, Some of our most vulnerable seniors and persons with disabilities, including veterans who served our country with honor, are unable to pay for basic necessities while they wait for their overdue payments.

We are giving the trump-appointed heads of the Social Security Admin **24 Hours** to get off their backsides and stop delaying sending stimulus checks to 30,000,000 Americans.

The IRS and Treasury have so far issued 127 million payments, with a value of $325 billion. Many of those checks are paper checks or pre-paid debit cards that will be mailed to recipients. Its possible that some Social Security recipients will receive mailed checks from those earlier rounds of payments or subsequent rounds of payment.

How Can I Get The Right Amount Of Stimulus Money For My Dependents

The third stimulus check changes the rules and makes dependents of all ages eligible for up to $1,400 each toward the household’s total payment. That includes older adult relatives and college-age children. However, some beneficiaries with dependents will need to file a 2020 tax return to receive the $1,400 per dependent, so that the IRS knows how many dependents you claim.

“People in this group should file a 2020 tax return to be considered for an additional payment for their dependent as quickly as possible,” the IRS said in a March 22 press release.

There are ways you could get more money with the third check and things to know if youhad a baby in 2020. There are also tax breaks for anyone caring for children and older adults, and details on whom the IRS counts as an adult to receive their own stimulus check.

For the first stimulus check approved under the CARES Act in March 2020, qualified people with dependents age 16 or younger were eligible for up to $500 per child dependent, but not everyone actually received that extra money. For the second stimulus check, as long as your children were 16 years old or younger, they contributed $600 toward the final total of your household’s second stimulus check.

Am I Eligible For A Stimulus Check If I Have Other Income

If you have income in addition to your disability benefits that make your combined income over $75,000, you aren’t eligible for the full stimulus payment. Similarly, if you’re married and file a joint return, and your income combined with your spouse’s income is over $150,000, you are eligible for only a reduced payment. In those situations, your stimulus payment, including any payment for dependents, is reduced by a percentage of the amount over those thresholds.

What income does the IRS look at to determine if your payment should be reduced? For the third stimulus check, the IRS used your “adjusted gross income” from your 2020 tax return to determine if you’re eligible. If you didn’t file a tax return, the IRS used your income from your Social Security or SSI checks.

Lawmakers Are Pushing For Ssi Reform

SSI benefits are long overdue for an upgrade, said Rebecca Vallas, senior fellow and co-director of The Century Foundations Disability Economic Justice Collaborative.

Forgetting about SSI for 40-plus years is the poster child of why, it is Exhibit A of why disabled people do not feel that their leaders in Washington care about them, Vallas said.

That could be poised to change as Washington lawmakers show an increased interest in updating the program.

More from Investor Toolkit:Investors are flocking to green energy funds

This spring, the two U.S. senators from Ohio Democrat Sherrod Brown and Republican Rob Portman introduced a bill that would let beneficiaries set more money aside without jeopardizing their eligibility for benefits.

The proposal has also drawn co-sponsors from both sides of the aisle. That includes Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., chair of the Senate Finance Committee, who has vowed to push for progress on it this year.

Advocates hope it will be just a first step toward modernizing the program.

I want to do much, much more, Brown said of SSI reform in an interview with CNBC.com in May.
