Choose A Representative Payee For Social Security To Consider Before You May Need One

The future can be uncertain. However, our Advance Designation program can help your clients if a time comes when they need a representative payee to help manage their Social Security benefits or Supplemental Security Income payments. Advance Designation enables someone to identify up to three people, in priority order, who they would like to serve as their potential representative payee.

We recently celebrated the one-year anniversary of our Advance Designation program. Since its launch in March 2020, more than one million eligible individuals have opted to participate.

Adults and emancipated minors who do not have representative payees may make advance designations whether they are applying for, or receiving, benefits. If your clients are eligible, they may provide and update Advance Designation information when they:

  • File a claim for benefits online.
  • Use the application available in their personal mySocial Security account at www.ssa.gov/myaccount.

Your clients may also change their Advance Designation, including the priority order, at any time if they are still capable of making their own decisions. In the event that they can no longer make their own decisions, your clients and their families will have peace of mind knowing they have already chosen someone they trust to manage their benefits.

What If The Irs Didnt Send Me The Full Amount For The First Or Second Stimulus Payment

According to the IRS, people who receive Social Security retirement, SSDI, SSI and Railroad Retirement benefits, as well as Veterans Affairs beneficiaries, were automatically eligible for the first two stimulus payments. If you receive these federal benefits as your only form of income, you werent required to file a federal income tax return in 2018 or 2019. Under the CARES Act, you should have received a stimulus check automatically.

If that money didnt arrive, its possible you might have had a payment garnished for child support or funds diverted to pay a specific kind of creditor, but the rules changed with the second check. However, an IRS error could also be a potential culprit or the IRS may have needed more information about your eligibility.

To receive your money now, you need to claim the additional amount as part of tax season 2020, using the Recovery Rebate Credit. Even if you dont usually file taxes, youll have to file to get the funds. The deadline for filing your 2020 taxes was extended to May 17, 2021.

In some cases if you received a letter from the IRS confirming that your payment was sent, but you never actually got the money, for instance you may need to contact the IRS to request a payment trace.

The IRS says you can create and then check an IRS account to see more information about your eligibility around the first two stimulus payments.

Social Security Updates To Know For November 2022

The Social Security Administration recently posted a November 2022 update on its website, with much of the focus on the 8.7% cost-of-living adjustment that will boost Social Security and Supplemental Security Income payments in 2023.

See: 5 Things You Must Do When Your Savings Reach $50,000

In its update, the SSA said it will mail COLA notices throughout the month of December to retirement, survivors and disability beneficiaries, SSI recipients and representative payees. On average, Social Security benefit payments will increase by more than $140 a month starting in January. About 70 million Americans will get the higher payment.

Recipients who want to know their new benefit payment amount sooner can get their Social Security COLA notices online using the Message Center in their personal my Social Security account. The online information will be available in early December, prior to the arrival of mailed notices. Because Social Security customers can get the COLA notice online or in the mail, the SSA advises against contacting the agency to get the new benefit amount.

Other 2023 changes include an increase in the maximum amount of earnings subject to Social Security payroll tax and a change in the retirement earnings test exempt amount. For more information, check the COLA fact sheet, located here, on the Social Security Administration website.

Eligibility Requirements To Receive A Coronavirus Relief Stimulus Check

As mentioned earlier, recipients of disability benefits are not excluded from receiving the stimulus checks, but there are specific requirements that must be met in order to qualify for these funds. First, you must have a valid Social Security number. Second, you must not be claimed as a dependent on another individuals tax return. Third, you cannot be incarcerated. Fourth, your income will dictate how much you receive. For example, only individuals making less than $75,000 are eligible to receive the full $600. The government typically uses recent tax filings to determine an individuals income in most cases.

What Is The Cost

Social Security stimulus checks arrive

The Social Security cost-of-living adjustment is an increase in Social Security benefits to help with inflation.

The COLA increase took effect this month, marking the largest increase in 40 years.

Retirees will receive an average of $1,657 a month, up from $1,565 last year.

The Senior Citizens League says the problem with this boost is it may push some older people into a higher income bracket, making them ineligible for food assistance.

Despite the lobbying by the league, itâs unlikely a fourth stimulus will be a reality as Congress has moved on from considering another Covid relief check.

Meanwhile, another online petition asking for monthly stimulus checks of $2,000 for the duration of the pandemic has surpassed 3million signatures.

The Change.org petition was started by a Denver, Colorado restaurant owner whoâs urging Congress to provide $2,000 payments for adults and $1,000 payments for children immediately and continue regular checks until the pandemic ends.

When Is The Latest Round Of Stimulus Payments Expected For Ssi Ssdi Beneficiaries And Veterans

Federal beneficiaries who filed a 2019 or 2020 tax return or used the Non-Filers tool in 2020 may have already received a stimulus payment, or could get one in a future batch of checks being sent out by the government.

For most everyone else, payments started going out on April 7 by direct deposit or on your Direct Express card. For those receiving payments through the mail, those checks began on April 9. If you have a foreign address and dont typically file a tax return, electronic payments went out around April 21 and paper checks on April 23. Veterans who dont file taxes ordinarily should have received their payment on April 14.

The IRS and Treasury will use the information it has on file to automatically send you a check . People who have already filed a 2020 tax return this year to claim missing stimulus money may find that the IRS will use this information instead of your 2019 details if it has processed your latest return .

Some people may need to file a 2020 tax return, even if they dont usually file, so the IRS has all the information needed to send payments to cover eligible dependents.

Information Regarding Economic Impact Payments For Social Security And Ssi Beneficiaries With Representative Payees And People Living In Us Territories

The Social Security Administration issued an update today about COVID-19 Economic Impact Payments to certain groups of Social Security and Supplemental Security Income beneficiaries. Beneficiaries who have their regular monthly payments managed for them by another person, called a representative payee, will begin receiving their EIPs from the IRS in late May.

Special rules apply to beneficiaries living in the U.S. territories: American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, the Northern Mariana Islands, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. In general, the tax authority in each territory, not the IRS, will pay the EIP to eligible residents based on information the IRS will provide to the territories. It is anticipated that beneficiaries in the territories could begin receiving their EIP in early June.

The Social Security Administration has been working with the IRS to provide the necessary information about Social Security and SSI beneficiaries in order to automate and expedite their Economic Impact Payments, said Andrew Saul, Commissioner of Social Security. While millions of our beneficiaries have already received their EIPs from the IRS, we continue to work hard for those beneficiaries who are awaiting their payment from the IRS.

For additional information about payments to beneficiaries with representative payees, please refer to .
