Stimulus check 2021: Who gets one and when can you expect to receive the money?

If you filed a 2019 tax return and it wasnt processed in time to issue your first stimulus check by December 31, 2020, you can claim your first stimulus check as the Recovery Rebate Tax Credit on your 2020 tax return or use GetCTC.org if you dont have a filing requirement.

If you filed your 2020 tax return, the IRS may still be processing your return. The fastest way to receive the payment is through direct deposit. Your first stimulus check, which you claim as the Recovery Rebate Credit, will be sent as part of your tax refund. You can check the status of your tax refund using the IRS tool Wheres My Refund.

Because of COVID-19, it is taking more than 21 days for the IRS to issue refunds for certain mailed and e-filed 2020 tax returns that require review.

What If I Didnt Get Some Or All Of My Stimulus Checks

If you think you are eligible and you did not get a check for you or your dependents, you can still get the money by filing your 2020 or 2021 taxes. You may be eligible for free tax preparation help from Maines CA$H Coalition.

Income Limits: If you are filing as single with an adjusted gross income up to $75,000, married filing jointly with an AGI up to $150,000, or head of household with an AGI up to $112,500, you will receive the full payment. Above these income limits, the payment amount decreases 5 percent for every additional $100 of income up to $99,000 for a single adult, $136,500 for head of household, and $198,000 for a married couple.

If you have zero income you can still get the payment.

If you are married filing jointly, and one spouse has an SSN and one has an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number , the spouse with an SSN and any children with SSNs or an Adoption Taxpayer Identification Number can get the payment. How Much Money Will I Get

    • Adults whose adjusted gross income is less than $75,000/year will get $1,400 for each adult, plus $1,400 for each dependent no matter how old they are. This applies to heads of households who make less than $112,500, as well.
    • The IRS will use income information from your 2020 tax return if they received that return before sending your money. Otherwise they will use information from your 2019 tax return.
    • If the IRS sends your payment based on a 2019 return and then your 2020 return says you qualify for more , they will send an additional payment to make up for the difference. To get the additional payment, you must file the 2020 tax return by 90 days from the filing deadline or September 1, 2021, whichever is earlier.

How Can I Check My Stimulus Check Status

Stimulus checks could arrive as soon as January 2021, but will it be enough?

The IRS has created a website where you can check the status of your stimulus payment.

The Get My Payment tool is no longer updating for either the first or second stimulus check. However, you can use it to see the status of your third check.

    • If your payment has been processed. the IRS will specify its status including whether it has been sent, the date issued, and whether the money will be directly deposited or mailed.
    • If your status reads “Payment Not Available.” The IRS either hasn’t yet processed your payment or you aren’t eligible for one.
    • If it reads “Need More Information.” Your check was returned to the IRS after an attempted delivery. Give the IRS your bank information to receive your money.

If you did not get your first or second check, you’ll need to file a 2020 tax return to get the payment.

With Unemployment Numbers Improving Dont Expect A Fourth Stimulus Check

The stimulus checks were sent out at a time when the economy was stagnant, as a result of coronavirus restrictions. There was a need for a boost, but now the economy is recovering naturally.

The pre-coronavirus pandemic unemployment rate was 3.7% and it got all the way down to 3.8% in February 2022, so its basically back to what it was.

This is good news in general as more and more Americans are earning an income again, which reduces the need for another stimulus check in the view of politicians.

    The $19 Trillion Stimulus Law

The American Rescue Plan is the official name of that massive stimulus legislation enacted in March. It kicked the nations stimulus response into high gear.

Not only did it make the third round of payments possible. It also expanded the federal child tax credit, with Americans getting half of it this year as an advance payment. That advance will span six checks, which the IRS has started sending out monthly. All of which is to say, the 478 million figure we noted above is also a little incomplete.

It doesnt, for example, take into account the child tax credit checks that are coming once a month through December. In all, those will give millions of families as much as $1,800 this year for each eligible child. And theyll get the second half of the tax credit next year.

If You Didnt Get A Third Stimulus Check Last Year Or You Didnt Get The Full Amount You May Be Able To Cash In When You File Your Tax Return This Year

It was more than a year ago that a third round of stimulus checks was announced. Remember how excited you were to hear the news? An extra $1,400 in your pocket, plus $1,400 more for each dependent, was a big deal and made a huge difference for millions of Americans. But the excitement eventually turned to frustration and disappointment for people who didnt get a payment or didnt get the full amount. If thats you, theres some good news. You may still be able to claim the third stimulus check money you deservebut you have to act now, because you need to file a 2021 tax return to get paid.

Some people were left high and dry because they simply werent eligible for a third stimulus check. However, others were left out or given less than they were entitled to for various other reasons that wont prevent them from getting paid this year. For example, if you didnt get a third stimulus check because you didnt file a 2019 or 2020 tax return, you can still claim a payment when you file a 2021 tax return. If you had a baby in 2021, you can get the extra $1,400-per-dependent for the child that was missing from last years third stimulus check payment. You could also be entitled to stimulus check money when you file your 2021 tax return if you experienced other recent changes to your family or financial situation .

Does The American Rescue Plan Provide Additional Unemployment Benefits

Wheres my money? The students guide to COVID

Continuing the expanded unemployment aid established by the CARES Act and the Covid-19 Economic Relief Bill, this new pandemic relief legislation extends unemployment benefits through early September 2021. Those filing for unemployment benefits will remain eligible for $300 in aid per week on top of normal payments. The additional benefits are automatic, and recipients need only to continue filing biweekly claims with their state unemployment insurance agency.

The act also includes a new benefit for unemployed Americans in the form of a significant tax break. Individuals who collected unemployment during the 2020 tax year may waive federal income taxes on up to $10,200 of that money , provided they earned less than $150,000 in 2020.

Inflation Is One Reason Why There Wont There Be A Fourth Stimulus Check

Rising inflation is a major concern in the USA right now, with the rate hitting 7.5% for January of 2022. When the last of the stimulus checks came out, in March of 2021, inflation was just 2.6%.

Some believe that the stimulus checks helped start the spike in inflation and, whether thats true or not, another stimulus check wouldnt help that situation.

    What About People With Itins

You still need a work-authorizing Social Security Number to be eligible for this stimulus. However, there are important changes since the first round of stimulus checks.

    • In the first stimulus rollout, any non-SSN holder on a joint return made everyone on that return ineligible. Big change: The new rounds of stimulus has corrected this problem. If you filed a joint return with a non-SSN holder, you are still eligible for the stimulus. See the below hypotheticals.
    • Situation: A single tax filer has an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number but no Social Security number .
    • This person is ineligible for the stimulus.
  • Situation: A spouse has a Social Security number and files married filing jointly on a tax return with a spouse who has an ITIN.
  • The SSN holder is now eligible to get a payment. If they have children on the tax return that have SSNs, these children will be eligible for the payment for each qualifying child.
  • Situation: Two ITIN holders file a joint return and claim young children who have SSNs.
  • The children who have SSNs are eligible for the payment.
