What Happens If Someone Else Cashed My Stimulus Check

Those Who Usually Dont File A Tax Return Need To Do So This Year

Am I being scammed out of my stimulus check payment?

Even if you had no income last year, or too little to file a return, you should file a basic 2020 tax return this year, the IRS says. That is the only way for the agency to get the information it needs to disburse a payment.

When you file that basic return, the IRS will send the check to the address provided on the form.

âPeople do not need a permanent address or a bank account. They donât need to have a job,â the IRS writes. âFor eligible individuals, the IRS will still issue the payment even if they havenât filed a tax return in years.â

The quickest way to receive a stimulus payment is via direct deposit. Still, that can be inaccessible for some Americans. Millions operate outside of the banking system in the U.S.

The IRS is encouraging those without a bank account to set one up for free at a local bank. To help, the FDIC has launched a campaign that highlights 75 banks and credit unions that are offering no- or low-cost accounts specifically for the unbanked. You can read more information about that and search for local accounts on the FDICâs website.

Find Out Where Your Stimulus Check Is

To find out whether or not your check has been issued, go to the GetMyPayment website. Click Get My Payment, fill out your social security number, date of birth, and address, and hit continue. Youll then receive the status of your payment. The IRS will make the payment to you via the direct deposit account youve set up or the last available address they have for you. If youve moved or you feel the department has a wrong address for you, its up to you to correct it.

Is it time to start worrying about the missing stimulus check that you qualify for? The IRS has made more than 167 million payments since March — with a new batch of checking going out each week. If you think your $1,400 payment is lost or never sent — maybe you received a letter telling you the IRS sent your payment but you’ve not received it — you may need help trying to track it down. The same goes for the first and second payments from 2020.

It’s possible there’s an issue with your check, or the IRS could have the wrong mailing address on file. Another reason why you may want to track down your payment is if you received less than the amount expected and you’re owed a “plus-up” payment. By the way, in that case, you do not need to file an amended tax form.

    Local Bank Or Credit Union

Even if you dont have a bank account at the moment, you can still seek a local bank or credit union to cash your stimulus check. Government checks are considered safe, which means the banks wont have any issue cashing the stimulus checks for people who arent their customers. At the same time, you should be aware that they might take a fee from you if you use this method. It all depends on each bank or credit union.

Before going to the bank or credit union, you should give them a call. Ask them whether any fee will apply for cashing stimulus checks as a non-customer. Usually, fees could be between $5 and $20. In order to be able to get your stimulus check, you also need to present two IDs with photographs. These could be your passport, military ID, drivers license, or anything of the sort.

Also, FDIC, aka the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation told financial institutions that they should help people who are struggling because of the pandemic. This can be done by making the restrictions less harsh, waiving fees, and allowing non-customers to cash their stimulus checks. As such, there are high chances that there is a credit union or a bank that will instantly help you cash your stimulus check, while not charging you any fee.

More Than 152 Million Stimulus Payments Have Been Made By The Irs And Some People Are Asking If They Can Cash Someone Elses Check Amid Coronavirus Pandemic

The Internal Revenue Service has made over 150 million stimulus payments and there are some 20 million more to be made amid the coronavirus pandemic. The IRS is going to issue about 4 million debit cards to those who dont have bank information and have not received their payment.

There have also been cases where family members passed away and their check has not been cashed yet so the question that many are asking is if they can cash someone elses check. The answer to that question is yes, but there are consequences to that.

âA payment made to someone who died before receipt of the payment should be returned to the IRS , according to updated guidance posted on IRS.gov on 6 May.

That was the dilemma facing an untold number of Americans who have received $1,200 stimulus payments, by paper check or direct deposit, in the names of deceased spouses and other family members. The Internal Revenue Service finally has an answer: Give the money back.

Return the entire payment unless the payment was made to joint filers and one spouse had not died before receipt of the payment, in which case, you only need to return the portion of the payment made on account of the decedent. This amount will be $1,200 unless adjusted gross income exceeded $150,000, said the IRS.

    What Is A Payment Trace

The IRS allows taxpayers to initiate a request to locate a missing, stolen, or lost payment. Once you start the payment trace, the IRS will determine whether the check was cashed. If it has not, the IRS will cancel the payment and issue a replacement check. For payments sent via direct deposit, the IRS will contact the bank to attempt to recover the payments. Banks have up to 90 days from the initial payment trace to respond to the IRS request.

Before initiating a payment trace, you will need to wait for the following timeframes to pass:

    • Five days since the expected deposit date
    • Four weeks since the check was mailed to your mailing address
    • Six weeks since the check was mailed to a forwarding address
    • Nine weeks since the check was mailed to a foreign address

If you lost a check, you can immediately initiate a payment trace to request that the check be canceled and reissued.

You can initiate a payment trace either by phone at 829-1954 or 919-9835 for stimulus payments, or by completing Form 3911, Taxpayer Statement Regarding Refund. If you are married and file a joint tax return with your spouse, the IRS will not allow you to initiate your request by phone you will both need to complete Form 3911.

    Who Should Have Received Money

There are several groups who should have received money as part of the COVID-19 economic stimulus response. This includes:

    • People receiving Social Security, Railroad, or other retirement benefits.
    • People receiving public benefits like SSDI, disability, or veterans benefits.
    • People who are not required to file a federal tax return, such as people who have no income or made less than $12,200 in the previous year.

All of these groups should have received $1200, with those earning up to $75,000 receiving the full amount, and those earning between $75,000 and $99,000 getting slightly less. Families were also entitled to $500 per eligible child.

With so many people being eligible for these funds, alleged scams and fraud cases have increased. Why Did I Get More Than One Letter From The Irs About My Economic Impact Payments

After each of the three Economic Impact Payments is issued, the IRS mails a letter called a notice to each recipients last known address. This notice provides information about the amount of the payment, how the payment was made and how to report any payment that wasnt received.

Keep any IRS notices received related to the Economic Impact Payments with other tax records. The IRS is unable to issue a copy of the notice if it is lost or never received, even though the payment was received. Taxpayers who dont have their notices can view the amounts of the first and second Economic Impact Payments through their online account.

Some people who received an EIP debit card and still had not activated their card were sent a letter earlier this year reminding them to activate their card or to request a replacement if they accidently threw it away. See the FAQ about this reminder letter.
